[Free Radical Design's Haze was not a good game. After being delayed multiple times, the futuristic first-person shooter landed with a thud. Part of that can be attributed to the developer's struggle coming to grips with PlayStation 3 hardware.

It's not an unfamiliar story, and a story heard countless times throughout System Wars - but one that may explain why the former TimeSplitters devs faltered with Haze. Free Radical co-founder Karl Hilton, now at new home Crytek UK, explains to Develop how "technical issues" affected the final product.

"We hit a few stumbling blocks on it that meant we spent more time trying get the game running properly and less time to design the game properly," Hilton says, lamenting that Haze "wasn't the game it should have been."

Hilton's still up on the PS3, though, despite Haze's critical and commercial performance. He calls Sony's platform a "powerful machine but a difficult one to get the best out of."

And believe it or not, his new employers will get the best out of it, Hilton says.

"We know the PS3 can do amazing things, and no one has pushed it as far as it can go, but I think the CryEngine gives us a great head start on it," he says.]

Blaming a console because of your bad developing is ignorant, sure I've heard that it's hard to develop on it.. But people still need to have some dignity and blame it on themselves.

Free Radical = Win

Shame Haze didn't work out, but it seems they're still wanting to put effort into it. They make a new game comparable to Time Splitters and I'm sold. That'd be awesome.

Free Radical needs to shut their mouths and make another Time Splitters game. They failed with Haze because they failed. Blaming someone else...well...nobody asked them to make the damn game on the PS3 in the first place. Cry less. Or go join Factor 5 in the big babies corner.

Well if they were having so much trouble why didn't they just drop the PS3 and start making it for the 360 and/or PC?

i know xbox360 can do more amazing things than ps3 the goddamn cpu, edram or gpu can be used for physics. xbox360 gpu has a custom api no pc or console supports the same api. developers havent even began to take advantage of xbox360's gpu.

ps3's gpu is so outdated compared to xbox360's gpu. doesnt matter how powerful the cell is it wont help it. the xbox360's gpu could beat cell in folding at home that's a fact.

Haha developers havent even began to take advantage of 360 foreal. Inside the Smart 3D Memory is what is referred to as a 3D Logic Unit. This is literally 192 Floating Point Unit processors inside our 10MB of RAM. This logic unit will be able to exchange data with the 10MB of RAM at an incredible rate of 2 Terabits per second http://www.hardocp.com/article/2005/05/19/xbox_360_gpu_features/3

It's not really an "anti-PS3" article. It just says something everyone knows, that the PS3 is hard to develop for. Personally, I feel bad Haze flopped and just about ruined Free Radical. On the flip side, I know that the PS3 has amazing games and it's going to come down to the talent of the developers (and their budget) to make a game worthy of my $60.

Damn man, you are certainly posting alot in SW nowadays. Anyways on topic - its no surprise, the PS3 is a hurdle as a development platform compared to other systems. There is probably much truth in what is being said. However, of course, its no excuse for releasing a rather mediocre shooter surrounded in hype.
