Sold off my GTX 970 and put back my old HD 7850 in service.

Everything is set to High at 1080p in Witcher 3 except foliage visible distance which is set to medium.

Getting averages of around 34 fps and can even hit 39-40 in less demanding area. Almost never dips below 30.

So this is why CD Projekt RED sacrificed the gorgeous looking 2013 version of Witcher 3 we were promised? So it could run on that?

As much as people laugh at the 900p of the X1, PS4 has serious CPU issues. It's supposedly the equivalent of an overclocked 7870 in terms of GPU but a stock 7850 (860/1200) beats it handily because it's not being held back by a shit CPU.

Thank you Sony.

This is pretty well known, the GPU is completely out of balance with the capabilities of the CPU.

I'm surprised a 7850 is held back by a CPU. This thing came out over 3 years ago.

I'd be interested to see your Firestrike scores, we have very similar PC's.

Pretty impressive score. I'm especially surprised at your 2600K being so close to my 4790K. Did you overclock it?

Not powerful enough for me. I want a card that absolutely tears through games at max settings(sans AA) and keeps a frame rate of 60 or above.

970 is a very good card but still a midrange card. I'm currently putting money aside for Pascal.

Yeah, it's at 4.4 Ghz, you can understand why I still haven't upgraded my CPU yet, there's no reason to. Intel needs to push out a new architecture, they're iterating too much like AMD instead of innovating. My 2600k is going on 5 years old soon and it still hangs with the newest processors available, that's good for me, however it's not a good sign for where the industry stands.

I think anyone who would laugh at any version of a game with slightly decreased resolution in favor of stable framerate is a moron. I mean, I can tell the difference between 720p and 1080p... but not 900 and 1080. Some PS4 game versions have obtained a reputation of false superiority from this resolution fad. The ignorant fanboys love that shit. Strength in numbers I suppose.

AMD has been getting absolutely demolished by Intel since the waning days of the Athlon 64(good times). Intel just doesn't have a reason to make their chips much faster when there's no serious competition around. The GPU front is advancing much quicker because there is some semblance of competition. That 2600k is still very impressive. What's the highest stable clock you reached?

@isturbo1984 agreed. Stable 900p>choppy 1080p.

4.4 is what I topped out at, I didn't hit the silicon lottery but it's been good to me and it's been clocked at this since I put it in my PC. I know some people get theirs to run stable at 4.8+ but this chip just doesn't want to go any higher no matter the voltage.

Tormented doesn't recognize that.

Anyway, I pushed my 4790K to 4.4 Ghz without voltage increase. I haven't tested 4.5 Ghz speeds.

My other 4770K wasn't so luckily ie. 4.2 Ghz without voltage increase.

Not true. It's actually and underclocked 7870. It's slightly better than a 7850, also it has superior gpgpu capabilities (that need to be utilized properly because the CPU's shit, if devs want impressive physics)

So yeah it might be the CPU in Ps4 holding it back in this game but if so, the blame lies with the developer because you just need to keep cutting things until the game is stable. Ps4 has games with a locked 60fps, and so does Wii U a console with an even worse cpu.

@Chozofication:

If I have a stock 7850, I'll reflash frimware with similar brand over clock edition e.g I reflash my Sapphire 7950 with 810 Mhz to Sapphire 7950 with 900 Mhz.

Thank you Sony.

The PS4's GPU was never intended to compete with a stock clocked 7870 let alone an overclocked one.

My first 4770k was so bad that I couldn't get a stable overclock past 4.0ghz even with the voltage at 1.24v.

I complained about heat issues to Intel and got another one which was much better.

I find my two 970 in SLI tear through games just fine at 1440p.

I will only upgrade to Pascal if one 1070 is as strong as two 970s.

If that is the case then I will buy 2 1070s.

Mostly because I plan to buy an HTC Vive when it releases at the end of this year and I am not sure my 970s will do well, especially when I hear SLI support is flakey.

Witcher 3 was to be the reason to upgrade my 7850 but since it was able to play it that well with mostly high settings and even HBAO and hold a stable 30fps ( overclocked gpu at 1050 ghz) i decided to hold off a bit longer till Nvidia pascal release and hopefully a new GPU architecture from AMD so i can upgrade then

Sadly my HD7850 (1GB) only just about keeps up at 30FPS with a mixture of settings > medium. I desperately need to upgrade to a card with more vram, but I said to myself years ago the next upgrade would be on a die shrink which has not happened which is annoying.

You are going to be waiting around 8-10 more months for Pascal.

You could always buy a cheap used card to hold you off a little longer.

It's probably an underclocked 7870 then. The point still stands. PS4 has a GPU that either rivals or beats a 7850. Reality shows otherwise.

I think when people talk poorly about ps4 based on the witcher 3 are generally forgetting that CD project is a relatively small studio that put out 3 versions at the same time and probably optimized the ps4 version poorly. I've never had a PC game go from unplayable (under 30 fps) to always playable based on resolution alone.

I am currently a PC and android only guy, it's all common sense.

You are not running a tablet/netbook class CPU aka AMD Jaguar.

7970M: 20 CU at 850Mhz = 2.176 TFLOPS.

Blame TSMC. AMD attempting to move away from TSMC.

A strong cpu will ONLY ensure that you will get the 100% of your gpu.

What I am saying even if you use an alien CPU with infinity computing power you will still going to get the same fps because the GPU is the limit.

@Juub1990: The PS4 gpu is better that's pretty much a fact. You using a PC port that on average gets a 4fps advantage doesn't change that.

The CPUs are trash like everyone else Witcher 3 really demands from the CPU like in the digital foundry video the framerate difference can be up 20FPS between a Core i3 and a Core i5.

I'm actually using an i5 760, the real issue you end up witth older hardware is compatability, lots of games minimum are 7870 or 7970 now, while the nvidia side generally is still at gtx 660.

Is not even an issue considering most devs over exaggerate system requirements ( my guess is they list as minimum the lowest hardware they had available to test ). Just look at Witcher 3. A 7870 minimum yet a 7850 is able to play the game at 30fps with mostly high settings

@Juub1990: You DO know the XBox One basically has the same CPU, right? Just clocked 100mhz higher.

And how is this relevant?

Well PC has no 10/10 exclusives nor a recent exclusive GOTY, wich makes consoles the platform to play the best games available.

@Heil68: PC got Heroes of the Storm this year though. But Wii U is only one to score a 10/10 exclusive so +1 for you.

As much as people laugh at the 900p of the X1, PS4 has serious CPU issues. It's supposedly the equivalent of an overclocked 7870 in terms of GPU but a stock 7850 (860/1200) beats it handily because it's not being held back by a shit CPU.

That's what I've been seeing. There's always a hardware limit so at the end of the day, it seems to fall on the software design/development; x-game may be more GPU demanding while x-game might need more CPU. It seem mosty dependent on the target product.

Tc, I have never heard of ps4 being compared to oc 7870. Some people exaggerated about the GPU being near the power of a 7850, it is actually lower. 7870 is a claim I never heard though, and why is that relevant to the CPU anyways?

Oh well we knew it all along when Capcom compared it to 570 from 2010 and couple it with a tablet CPU it makes it a PotatoStation. No wonder it's running games at 900p19FPS.

@magmadragoonx4:

After the specs were leaked there was a large amount of cows saying that console optimization would mean it would take a GPU like a 7950 to beat the PS4 over a gen, and the 7870 was barely more powerful.

In reality, a 7790 can pace with the PS4, and an OC'd 7850 1GB pretty much trounces it. XO is even worse.

@Juub1990: The PS4 gpu is better that's pretty much a fact. You using a PC port that on average gets a 4fps advantage doesn't change that.

So, what happened to the consoLOLe optimizationzzzzzzzzzzzzz that make the console 2X more powerful than the PC counterpart, seems like the 900pStation is running well below 570 level GPU. Perhaps Scotty can shed some light on this.

@gamecubepad: anyone that made claims of higher than 7850 was never considered credible even back then.

PC has a consistent superior edge on consoles, it's not a debate.

This thread is redundant and BTW selling a 970? For real? I've consistently run everything I've thrown at my gtx 660 on ultra, that thing should have you covered until the next console gen or more.
