we know that hd dvd is dead already.nintendo achieved to get past this war because they did not have a hd format.i believe it was a right move.microsoft supported hd dvd but it was not a part of their console so they managed to get rid of it.sony as we all know had blu ray from the start.without thinking as a fanboy what do you believe that nintendo and microsoft will do in the next gen with their dvds;is there another way except blu ray or will they both follow it?what is your opinion?

Microsoft might go Blu-ray, or might create a brand new exclusive propiety storage device called Almost-Blu-ray. The difference is in the name.

there are already other superior optical formats in the works - bluray will not be the norm in 2-4 years. quote me if you like.

Even then. Nintendo is known for not following the storage format standards.Plus, I wouldn't be suprised if the Wii 2 isn't HD either.

nintendo did say that their next generation console will have graphics like the others and be HD. Fither more nintendo has had the most powerful console before. The SNES was more powerful then turbo graphics and sega. the n64 was more powerful then ps1 and saturn.

I just bought the 360 hd-dvd drive for $50 and it came with 6 movies. I also picked up the Matrix trilogy, Serenity, Training Day and a few others for next to nothing.

HD-DVD failing was a pretty good deal for me so far, I get cheap movies and the ability to keep hours off my 360 and PS3's disc drives when watching regular dvd movies.

My guess is the next Xbox will have Blu-Ray since we are not quite ready for a dl only game system.

Owning movies is such a huge waste of money that I can't believe I'm going to get suckered into doing this crap all over again and watch another movie collection go obsolete in another 10 years but oh well, you want what you want I guess.

You really think their next system will only have downlodable games ???

That would mean they loose 99% of their customers, very few have the nerve to download a 20GB game, even more redownload it each time your HDD is filled up

That is crazy, maybe in xbox 15 or so, when everyone on the planet will have access to 80Mbps for free, and perfect lines that never fail, or disconnect, and kids get a credit card from their 10 years old, maybe

Even then, i am sure a disk would be needed, or half the customers would not care or buy

the dvd format the companies will choose will play a very important role in the next gen.i believe that microsoft and nintendo will make different choises and they will both try to see if they can come up with a another solution.as we all know sony is one of the owners of blu ray so it is not an easy decision for sure..

the logical step is that both will go blu ray.but i believe that nintendo will find a way to make a new format like what they did at the gamecube era.microsoft will most probably try to promote hd downloadable content even more and they will be forced by the times to follow blu ray.

Nintendo still has it's own format. Look at a Wii game. It doesn't say DVD.

Don't kid yourselves people all the systems are just going to have a blu-ray drive. By that time it won't cost any more than DVD to use. No one is going to go pure digital distribution either because they'd instantly lose at least half the market.

Really? I thought all DVDs had the little DVD stamp on them. I know PS2 games do. Do 360 games have it? My 360 is at my appartment but I am at my parents house for spring break so I cant look.

i think microsoft will go bluray but nintendo will stay with dvd (or make a new format like they did with the GC) but ps4 will not have bluray.let me explain. ps1 had cd, ps2 had dvd, ps3 has bluray,so its likely that ps4 will have some othere format with space of something 200 gb.

I currently have an hd dvd addon for 360 and it rules, I paid 2 dollars for it because i had some gift cards left over from xmas and got it when it went down to 50 dollars, I own 31 hd dvds i spent at most 200 dollars on them cause they we're cheap....so you can still buy hd dvd and have no problem buy hd dvd now when its so super duper cheap, and when blu ray comes down in price you can buy that and be able to catch up with your high def collection then.

Right now I mostly still buy dvd versions of movies unless an hd dvd version for cheap comes out cheap as in 15 dollars or less.

Meh, I couldn't care less about Blue-Ray and HD-DVD. I will just stick to downloading H.264's. You guys might not know this but the hole HD content only available on Blue-ray/HD-DVD is nothing but crap. There is no problem sticking HD content on normal DVD's (I just stream my movies from my PC to my 360 to save discs any way). Also, why do people always keep going on and on about disc space? It doesn't matter at all, Crysis is the most beautiful game ever and its only 6 gigs big so screw Blue-Ray.

Based on their file limitations with the 360 and lack of a standard HDD, they obviously don't want to enough.

Its been confermed that asus is making blu ray drives for x360 and will launch in q3 so ms is going blu ray. but really the future is in digital distrubution and bigg 320gb + hdds when 200-250gb is standard in even low end notebook why does x360 have only 20gb and ps3 40gb?

shouldnt we enjoy this generation of consoles rather than discussing what format all 3 manufacturers will adopt for their next consoles ????

anyway unless another major format is introduced in the HD market, i guess MS will go Blu-ray... Nintendo mmm i dont know what they'll do !!

lol the problems of consoles and their hdds form 2002 why no 205gb hdd when many notebooks have 250 or 320gb. if you have a half decent broadband you can easily download a game overnight. anyway games downloaded off steam are much smaller than the retail version since it only downloads what you don't already have, so say you already have the unreal 3 engine for a game it doesn't have to download it.

I'm not saying there wont be disks next gen but dd is going to be part of next gen if ms and sony can get their act together with large hdds, don't be suprise if sony's new trend of installing continutes so every game require insilation

I for one would still prefer to buy a hard copy of a game - something about having a hard copy collection of it makes it a more worth while purchase... I'd also hate to have to increase my internet speed and data usage!

Imagine Microsoft going Digital Dristribution-only... oh no mandatory downloads and installs! lol

well it took a new format this gen to support the new HD graphics, i can't imagine the next gen coming any time soon, just look at the improvements with each passing systems graphics. take sony for example. i'd say by the time the ps4 or w/e they call it comes around it'll take something different than blue-ray to hold the content of those games, i'm sure by the time the next gen rolls around they're probably be another new HD format or two ready to be integrated into the consoles. =/

it's not your fault, but you have the mentality of wanting to stick to something familiar. it's not necesarily bad, it just can hinder progress very easily.

Just because HD DVD is dead, you cant claim blu ray has won anything. I just can't imagine blu ray will never replace DVD.

So lemme take out my crystal ball:

Sony will still use blu ray.

Nintendo will use a proprietary Optical disc that uses blu ray technology, it will not play blu ray movies.

Microsoft will not release a traditional console, the crystal ball is fuzzy here, it may just be a pc add on or something.

It's the mentality of many and now that they are seeing they can't easily trade the downloaded games on PSN this mentality will grow. DL content will never tuely replace a hard copy of anything because people do like to trade or sell things and then there is always collectors of old media that will always want there media on a hard-copy. I for one have never bought anything that has to be DL and my internet service is fairly fast, but it's the principal of only having a single place to buy the media and this can create a monopoly on the media market that in the end could cost a lot more than the hard-copies do now.

i believe DL is possible, but I don't think it could ever rule out discs, what would happen to gamestop? and just my opinion if DL really wanted to take off compared to discs, a DL copy would have to be cheaper to draw any customers.

sony will stay in bluray and i think that microsoft will follow too even if we see bigger storage disks.i believe that nintendo will make the diference again and use a simplier version of blu ray.digital distribution will become a lot bigger but it will not make the publishers abandon the traditional way of selling a game.
