Blu Ray is constantly touted as the trueHD disc format, simply because it has a few more gigs of space. Rediculous. Is that more important to you than features? Ok, lets compare the upcoming release of 300, which will be released on both. '

Check out the features for each. So why is Blu Ray better again? Sure, it may be a few bucks cheaper, but quality comes at a price. And you get what you pay for...

Not only does the HD DVD version come packed with more features, but you can play it not only in an HD DVD player, but you can simply flip it to play it in a normal DVD player, the extra money is way worth it.

Blu-ray has been outselling it by about 2 to 1; Blockbuster has recently picked up the format exclusively; blu-ray is being driven by the Playstation 3; the Xbox 360 add-on is not having the same effect; leading analysts like Michael Pachter of Wedbush Morgan Securities make the same prediction.

Im just curious if you have been living in a cave for the past 3 years because had you been amongst the living, you would have seen how bluray is outselling HD DVD by a substantial margine. Features are worthless if no one is willing to buy the product.

I think blu-ray will have a steeper hill to climb than DVD, because it depends on HDTV adoption, whereas people didn't have to buy brand new tv's to make the shift from VHS to DVD.

The majority of studios and electronics giants all agree the war is all but over in favor of Blu-Ray.

Wonder what hd28guy_basic and Yellow_Rose think of that?

Hddvd was up 37% in hardware sales from Q1 to Q2 this year and bluray was down 20%. This war will be won buy the one that sells more standalone players and right now in the US hddvd has 180k + 160k 360 addonsto blurays 105k + 350k of PS3 owners that are buyingbluray. Around 22% of PS3 owners are actually buying bluray titles and 100% of people that buy a standalone player are buying titles.

The PS3 is getting outsold by a substantial margin as well, does that mean that it is going to be a dead system soon much like your prediction of HD-DVD? And assuming this holds true, once the PS3 dies, there goes the primary source of Blu-Ray players to the mainstream... like you said... features are worthless if no one is willing to buy the product.

It should be noted, because I know the mentality of this board... thiswas a sarcastic post :/

I personally don't know why people choose Blu-Ray over HD-DVD myself. For one thing a Blu-Ray player costs slightly more then twice as much as an HD-DVD player, yet he picture quality is almost identical. But, for whatever reason, people are choosing Blu-Ray more then HD-DVD. My personal opinion is the PS3 is skewing the sales of the discs. Let's face it, how many people do you know who actually have a standalone Blu-Ray or HD-DVD player. I can't name a single one. Now how many people can you name who own a PS3. Probably at least one out of 4 people reading this. Now what about people with an HD-DVD player? If you know somebody who has one they most likely own it as an addon to their 360, but since it doesn't come with the 360 maybe only a quarter, if that, of 360 owners have one. So what does all this mean? Well in short you're not seeing the masses flock to Blu-Ray over HD-DVD, you're seeing the small number of PS3 owners buy more discs then the even smaller number of HD-DVD 360 addon owners buy HD-DVD discs. If you were to look at the number of actual standalone players sold you'd find the numbers don't scale equally with the number of discs sold. Simply put, though bundling a Blu-Ray player with every PS3 may have made the PS3 cost too much to do anything other then hang on to 3rd place, by doing so they provided their Blu-Ray discs with an installed user base. The irony of this is they're winning the next gen media format war before the average consumer ever gets involved. So the next time you mock Sony for putting their stupid Blu-Ray player into the overpriced PS3, just remember that they'll be laughing all the way to the bank when they make back their losses 20 times over because Blu-Ray owns the market. This is why the PS3 won't go the way of the dreamcast, because even if it's never profitable for Sony, it will help them win a market that absolutely dwarfs the console system wars.

So you can watch it on your dvd only computer, or in your car if you havedvd in your car, or if you have a portable dvd player, or you can lone it to a friend that only has a dvd player.

universal may start supporting blu ray which leaves HDDVD with one exclusive company (WB?) with 8 of the 9 major production companies supporting Blu ray HD dvd is losing backing. So you really think PS3 will remain in 3rd place? It's something like 6 million consoles behind 360, and it's been on the market a year less. Also, just so you know - the cost of the Blu-Ray diodes has decreased substantially, and prices for PS3 will continue to fall - especially with Sony constantly streamlining and removing non-essential components from the PS3(ie. EE removed from the 80gb version).

Including Blu-Ray in the PS3 was a risky decision, but, I personally think it will pay off in spades. For one, next-gen games are getting freaking huge, with all the HD sound, video, high-res textures etc - it all takes up a lot of space. Look at any of the newer PS3 games coming out - most developers are saying the same thing, it wouldn't be possibly without Blu-Ray. Heck, look at MGS4, I'm willing to bet that game will weight in at 30gb+ when released. And nows lets consider the fact that Blu-Ray will most than likely win the format war - once that's over, PS3 will be the only out of the box Next-Gen compatible console.

Within 2 months you will be able to get aHD player for less than $200 the 360 add-on for less than $150 and the PS3 will still be $500 to $600 andBR players might be $300, also HD has more movies slated for release the next few months so will see how long that 2:1 lasts.

For those who don't know blu-ray movies are on 25gigs only while hd-dvd are on 30gigsrwbojorquez

Wrong...Kingdom of Heaven is on a 50gb disk. And for those who don't know, it takes a double layer HD DVD to get 30gb while it takes only a single layer Blu ray to get 25gb. SO the suppossed format HDDVD wants to rule over HD movies yet already since its launch it needs two layers for normal sized HD movies. BLu ray is a larger format, and more flexible. It has greater piracy control which is why Fox said screw you HD DVD and has more exclusive movies studios. On top of that it is the only HD format now being pushed by Blockbust, it outsells HD DVD weekly and is put in every persons home who owns a PS3.

HD DVD can't stand up against those odds. Not to mention that most PCs are making blu ray drives and not HD DVD oh and Sony, Samsung, SHarp, Pioneer, Panasonic, LG..etc make Blu ray players while Toshiba.........oh yeat thats it, they are the only ones making HD DVD hardware currently.

the sad truth is both of these formats will probably bomb. Im sure Blue rays advantage comes from the PS3 have a mandatory blue ray player installed on it, and thats whos buying the movies.I think they both will bomb because as one person said you must buy and hdtv for it, not to mention the movies are expensive as hell on both sides.I think there cool to watch, but DVDs are just so dominate right now, seriously am I the only one here that thinks no matter if blue ray or hddvd wins, that neither will compete with dvds at least for another 5 years, by that time the next gen consoles will be here as well.

The Blu-Ray edition of 300 is cheaper than the HD-DVD. I'm not paying extra for special features that may or may not suck.

[QUOTE="nathantay"]Hddvd was up 37% in hardware sales from Q1 to Q2 this year and bluray was down 20%. This war will be won buy the one that sells more standalone players and right now in the US hddvd has 180k + 160k 360 addonsto blurays 105k + 350k of PS3 owners that are buyingbluray. Around 22% of PS3 owners are actually buying bluray titles and 100% of people that buy a standalone player are buying titles.nathantay

Pulling stats from your magic hat?

No, you can check out REAL info on the HD frmat war if you go to a AV site like DVDtown.com they post info about both formatsdaily. Also hd software sales where up and blurays are down.

I love this point because Blu-Ray is still outselling HD-DVD even after dropping in sales.

Yes from Q1 to Q2 Hd was up and Bluray was down. The figures come from Neilson,NPD, and point of salesinfo from the studios themselves.

up or down HD is still being outsold. Cold fact 2:1 no spinning or misinterpretation.

Within 2 months you will be able to get aHD player for less than $200 the 360 add-on for less than $150 and the PS3 will still be $500 to $600 andBR players might be $300, also HD has more movies slated for release the next few months so will see how long that 2:1 lasts.

sweet, an HD-DVD player that can't play nearly as many new releases as a blu ray player. You neglect to mention you need a 300 dollar 360 to attach the hd addon to add onto. There will be a 300 dollar blu ray player out this holiday season more likely than not and I doubt HDDVD will be around come 08. Give it up its done.

LOL..you dont get it, HD DVD will never catch on because it has ALOT less studio support. That means alot less big movies coming out and that means no matter how cheap the players get, if they dont have the movies people wanna watch, like Fox, DIsney and the box office record breaking Sony studios , they wont buy the thing. Blu ray prices are dropping fast and have alot more hardware developer support like Samsung, Pioneer, Panasonic, ete.. while Toshiba has well....Toshiba.

Lot's of consumers want that tangibility and the top bandwidth is still limited to the largest 30 metropolitan areas of the United States.

for people who don't follow the HD format war they go into retail stores asking which to buy because they usually go for the cheaper HDDVD player, but most knowledgable associates tell them whats what: less movies that are usually 5 dollars more than their blu ray counterparts

What you dont get is that movie studios are support HD formats because they WILL make they standard. They will do just like they did with DVD in the beginning. When HD DVD dies and blu ray is the only choice they will first offer special features exclusive to ONLY the blu ray version as the prices of blu ray players go down even further and HD becomes standard in TVs, Cable, and eventually movies which is currently happening. Then they will offer some movies ONLY on BLu ray and speacial box sets. Then they will slowly drop DVD support and BLu ray players will be there 20 bucks and ready for the average consumer who now owns a cheap HDTV thanx to mass production.

Its gonna happen because movie studios wanna resell you movies, they are running out of extra material and wanna resell their hits for more milkage on top of using a format that is alot less piracy friendly keeping even more money in their wallet.

Enlighten me.

Lets say your right, your argument seems sound. But do you really think blue ray players will hit $20 within 5 years? As I was saying this Generation ofconsoles will be long over before blue rays even come close to touching the sales of DVD's. The 360 itself is coming up on 2 years. I give it 3 more years before the next xbox comes out. This generation of consoles will not be decided by media, next generation im sure it will be.

everytime someone buys an HD-DVD two people buy a blu ray-FACT. Why do people try to fight it, HD-DVD is down for the count.

I'm pretty sure that web features aren't on 99.99% of consumers minds when buying a movie.
