So I'm getting a Wii probably this week and probably SMG to go with it next week. Now what lead me to get a Wii is basically seeing all the videos of SMG (I'm obviously getting other games but for now that one just hooked me on). The gameplay looks amazing but the graphics (art style atleast) just looks freakin sweet. What I'm wondering is, will it still look almost as good as the videos show on my non-hd tv and will it make THAT much of a difference?

considering the Wii cant go above 480p you dont need a hdtv, infact it will probably just look like a jaggy mess on a hdtv.

Run it on 480p with component cables for the best result (it is noticeably better).

Your normal tv will run it in 480i. If you have a tv that supports 480p and you also have the Wii component cables you will get a slightly clearer image.

well since the Wii is only capable of 480p no HDTV is needed, just make sure to use RGB or S-Video cables or even component if your TV has that kind of inputs rather than the defualt composite cables

No, getting an HD for the Wii is pointless. Trust me, I had an HD BEFORE the Wii was out, and I spent the extra money for Component cables...what a ripoff.

It is a last gen game graphically, so don't worry about. it. Actually, there are PS2 and Xbox games that have higher Resolutions than SMG has, those are worthy of HD, not any Wii game though.

the wii isn't capable of HD so no really, it will most likely look more impressive on a large lcd or plasma but since it can only be rendered at 480p if you play it on a really big tv it might look worse.

No, it's NOT. I have had that set up since DAY ONE. It was a WASTE OF MONEY. Completely.

I wish 480p would have knocked my socks off, but sadly there are PS2 and Xbox games that blow the Wii away when it comes to Resolution's and Graphics, sadly.

Now that I have a 360? The wii games are sad looking, luckily the controller redeems it somewhat.

To answer the question, HDTV is not necessary for SMG. However, though the difference isn't enormous, there is a noticeable difference between playing Wii games on a standard 480i set via Composite cables versus playing on a wide-screen hdtv via composite cables. People that can't notice the difference must be friggin' blind. I noticed the difference right away. Small details really pop out, variations in color are easier to see and the picture just looks sharper. Again, it's not an enormous difference but it's definitely a noticeable one.

If you have a HDTV, you might as well get some component cables for the Wii. If however, you only have a SDTV, then a Wii purchase shouldn't 'force' you to get a HDTV. There is a better picture with component cables but not so much to splash out on a brand new TV.

Ok, so play it with out the Componet cables then come back here and say it makes no diffrence...

Sure it's not OMG It's 1080P OMG ROXZORS MY SOCKZORS. But it's better then 480i... and your a fewl for aruing that 480p is worse then 480i...

You don't need an HD tv... just and EDtv..

Half right. It will look better with the compnonent cables but worse on a HDTV. You can't make a video resolution any better than it is. Thinking so can get you killed in some corners of the world.

No it'll look better on a HDTV as long as your sitting the recommend viewing distance away from your HD...

Like a lot of people say it looks worse... probably because they are sitting 4 or less feet from an 42" TV... When you should sit 6-7 feet away for optional viewing.

It stretches it... but you won't notice that much... and the ability to make it look good even after stretching depends on how good your TV is.

Yeah, I'm sure it looks beautiful when viewing from your neighbor's house.

The fact remains, you cannot take a low resolution image and make it a high resolution image. You can do all of the upscaling you want, all it does is blur the pixels.

You want SMG to look the best, keep it on a SDTV with components, end of story.

if you can upscale it to 1080p then it will look fine. I myself need to get an external upscaler for my hdtv for this very reason. Probably my next reciever will upscale the input. Although 480p on an HDTV isn't as bad as people make it out to be. Wii doesn't run in my TV'snative resolution so it's not as sharp as it could be. I have a 1080p bravia and it plays 480p content pretty decently and my eyes don't bleed when playing 480p content as other people will lead you to believe, but it still could be a little better with an external upscaler.

I'm guessing it would look as good on a widescreen native 480p tv since it wouldn't need to be upscaled to play in that TV's native resolution. Problem is, those TVs (EDTV) are rare now and badly outdated. Best option would be a 1080p TV for future content with the ability to upscale lower resolutions.

Sounds like you like to waste money. Worrying about upscaling a 720x480 image to 1920x1080 is trivial at best.

Just because it sputs it out as 1080i or p doesn't mean it actually is. You're better off playing a HD system on a HDTV. Then, and only then do your get true HD images.
