Definately agree about developers exploiting new avenues to create games. Altho the regular core mechanic of a game will most likely never get old but new avenues have to be created.
Heavy Rain was the first ever game to make me feel guilty about pulling the trigger and i can say iv pulled so many triggers in my whole gaming life

Unique as in genre or overall?

If you mean genre, I agree since it's the only one in that genre that I know of.

It could be, but i have to ask, unique in what way? because form what i understand, Heavy Rain is not the first game with this style of gameplay.

Anyone who agrees with that simply hasn't bothered looking for unique games. Cryostasis, The Void, Minecraft, Shadow of Chernobyl... the list goes on and on really.

No, it's not unique. Indigo Prophecy used the exact same game mechanic. Not to mention that non linear adventure games were there since early 90's. Name a single aspect of it that's unique.

My wife watched me play the whole game like it was a movie...she has never done that.

I was pretty impressed with the game's take on death and it's implications and all that.. until the part where you barge in to that house and quick time kill like 9 guards.

Yes. If you're a fan of the moves and you're feeling nostalgic,it was one of the best experiences this gen for me. But there are some issues. Like the first episode lacked any good puzzles, the second one had some though.

The animations are flonky too. It's more of an interactive movie than an adventure game where you explore and interact. But i love it just the same.

I beg to differ. in a generation filled with shooters, heavy rain stands out from the crowd. Hence unique. And again, he's not mentioning the past generation. I don't see why that das not compute

Heavy Rain is different or stands out, but I would say something has to be original or not done before to be unique.

There are many adventure games that came out this gen. So I don't get how Heavy Rain is the only non shooter out there. Every mechanic it introduced has been done before. Everything. It's not unique in any way. At least Mirrors Edge was a first person platformer, I've not seen that.

Tons of games have unique premises. Catharine for example...Patapon is a great series as well with fresh gameplay. Hell Demon Souls was pretty unique as well.

Erm, Portal? Mirror's Edge? They were, IMO, the two most unqiue this gen. How many First Person Puzzlers and First Person Platformers can you name?

Alan Wake, Stacked, Toy Soldiers, the upcoming Trenched, etc., etc. are all pretty unique for this generation. That's not even getting into some unique MMOs released in the last few years.

So I disagree with your conclusion.

It doesn't matter if it has been done this generation or not, a game cannot be unique if it has been done before. He's asking for unique games that have been released this generation, he never said anything in the past similar to it doesn't count because it was not released this gen.

Anyways I'm not going to debate over this.

I think it's one of a few. Mirror's Edge, Zak & Wiki, Patapon, Braid...actually no. There has been alot of unique games this gen. Look at XBLA and Wii games.

EDIT: Portal, Phoenix Wright, Trauma Center, The World Ends With You, and World of Goo were all also unique games I've never experienced anything like before.
