Hellgate - this was THE game everyone was waiting for. Now, it is announced you have to pay $9.95 a month to get the multiplayer aspect of it. I can only hope the offline mode allows you to experience ALL the content. Where as the online mode, you have to pay to get the good gear, guilds, housing, etc. etc. At this point, I would like to thank all the brainless gamers who bought into "microtransactions" - you've contributed to a dark future for gaming. So, since you are OK with being nickel and dimed to death with video game content; eat it.

The game has a FREE multiplayer. You only need to pay to get additional options. Such as the ability to create guilds and to be an officer in a guild.

Let me make it clear. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO PAY TO PLAY ONLINE, AT ALL. YOU ONLY HAVE TO PLAY IF YOU WANT UNNECESARY EXTRAS.

Very funny. There's a free online mode which offers many of the features of the paying subscritption and even allows you to interact with paying players.

And how long before this becomes the norm now? How long until Battlefield 2, C&C, Gears of war, halo 2, killzone 2 ect all jump on the band wagon and start charging $10 for a non-MMO game?

This game has multiplayer? Well, while I'm not surprised, I really didn't know. I'm really just looking forward to the single player portion of the game myself.

This just in, apparently you need to buy an XBL Gold subscription to even patch your 360 games. According to the OP, at least.

People who can't afford $10 a month for games shouldn't be playing games to begin with. Like others said, those are for the extra features.

It's so lame, it's not even a full fledged MMORPG so they charge $10.. Well guess what, before WoW came out MMORPG's were $10 a month.

Xbox Live is powered by your Live subscription.

PC games are hosted on the host's computers for free. (unless in rare cases you use the dev's servers)

PSN will not be able to host servers for more then 2-3 years before they start losing money. Expect online games to cut service in a few years.

Paying for Hellgate is so they can develop new content. Like it said, there will be a new content patch every single month, with a large content patch every 3 months. It's going to be MMO type content. The game will consistently get new areas, monsters, etc. Since developing and paying salaries for all the workers isn't free, they are going to charge.

And like he said, it's entirely free online. You just don't get to have the newer areas that the monthly fee helped make.

Well I remember DAOC was $10 a month for 3 months.. Then it raised and I said quit. Still, IMO hellgate shouldn't have a monthly fee at all and just release new content in expansions.

The multiplayer is FREE, its just added on features that you are charged for. I have a problem though. Most of the stuff they are charging for is quality control, customer service, and inalienable functions almost any online RPG should have. Its milkage.

then you should be happy, because it doesn't take a monthly fee. you still get 98% of the multiplayer features for free. this is an optional extra bonus stuff fee. i can't believe anybody in this thread even believed the OP. it pisses me off when good games get stupid bad raps because of nothing other than internet forum talk.

as someone asked in the other thread, have you ever tried contacting customer service on a free-multiplayer game? they're giving you the normal customer service that we've come to expect on basic/free. they're giving you guaranteed 24/7 support with the subscription.

Yes, but customer service should be a qualiy control in place for every game. Its not something you should charge for. Its called "Standard Business Practices".

Yes I realize there is a free portion, but it's lame that those who don't want to pay $10 a month for one game gets the sh**** service. Everything multiplayer should be free, to keep it even. 98% of the multiplayer features? You think they're going to keep a lot of people paying $10 a month for just tiny updates?

short answer - yeah. they don't need very many people willing to pay that much to get a good source of income going. the thing i'm arguing with you about on the customer service thing is that right now, EVERY game with free multiplayer out there gives us this 'sh*** service' you speak of. seriously, have you ever tried dealing with CS for d2? wc3? battlefield? paid games like EVE or WoW are better, and i actually have never heard anything about GW, but i have a feeling they're the exception to the rule.

Well since the non-paying customers dont get any content updates and don't get access to the best gear, you pretty much have to be subscribed to get the most out of the game. I will be paying for the elite. If they give me enough content, it will be worth it.

Customer service support over the internet on regular business hours. Paid members get 24/7 support. Theres no implication that the free one is any worse - just that the paid one can be accesed at all time. Very, very few games over 24/7 support for a non-subscription based model. Isnt that "standard business practice" for these kinds of things?

I wasn't talking about customer service as I usually don't care about that, I was referring more to things like server ques.. "Service" talking more about elite vs non elite things, not just customer service.

GW has a very different system....No monthly fees, but instead they have very large expansion packs every few months.

hell, people pay for WoW and eat queues. probably other games too. the exact language on it was that if there is a queue, elites will get to skip to the front of the line. i'm guessing it means they save 30 seconds up to a minute or two on busy times, though it could mean waiting in line for 30 minutes too XD. again, something some people can afford and would love to spring for - and others like me just won't care about. :D

you're complaining about paying money for superior customer service compared to free games, in a nutshell. really, think about it - one of the reasons given for charging for MMO's is the upkeep on servers and people keeping watch over the game. one of the counter-arguments is 'i don't want to pay for those people.' now someone's letting you pay for them only if you want them.

Yes, but Hellgate is using a different server structure than your standard MMO that doesn't require nearly as much upkeep. If it was a standard MMO, then I'd have no qualms.

if there's going to be queues, there's going to be a flagship studio-side server bottleneck somewhere. :)

In spite of all the doom and gloom sayers about, the game and the recent news have still been well received. It just seems otherwise as those that are displeased scream and make a lot of noise, while those that have no problem with the news just don't really have anything to say.

The price could be completely justified, depending on the quality of the game. Reserve your criticisms for when the game is released, and not before.

Their really doing something similar to guild wars, where they have Major paid updates every few months....

Guild Wars doesn't really have 'paid updates' (I'm assuming that you mean that we have to pay for them) - all updates in GW are free (of course!), but they did release a stand-alone, entirely new game every six months, that interlinked with any other GW that you own.

It depends if the game play justifies the fees.

Nonetheless, its charging what other games offer for free, I have to pay over wise I get a half arsed online system. Thats what it seems.

[QUOTE="Demetri_OS"]Hellgate - this was THE game everyone was waiting for. So, since you are OK with being nickel and dimed to death with video game content; eat it.dgsag

Very funny. There's a free online mode which offers many of the features of the paying subscritption and even allows you to interact with paying players.

Yup, exactly like Windows Live. It's all gotten blown out of proportion. You can play online for free with both Windows Live and in Hellgate.
