Scroll Down to the "Who developed Blu-ray" part and read the list of Board of Directors. Apple and Sony are on that list not mention Dell who is sided with Sony. I dont see Microsoft getting blu-ray unless they are ready to pay up big $$

Sony would have to allow fair use to Microsoft under the same terms offered to other licensees or face a hoard of anti-trust litigation.

Not on a 56" 1080p set they don't. In fact, over the air HD signals are much better than DVD.

You're saying Sony a respectable computer producer, doesn't want Microsoft, giant in the computer software industry, to use and make use for Blu-Ray a media and information storage device? Oh, I get it. Your just making a joke. Good one.

Blu-Ray and HD DVD are both out of date.

Digital distribution via cable & sattelite TV is the future.

Both are presently incapable of transmitting a 1080p signal with DTS-HD or DolbyTrueHD sound and will be for the near future. The bandwidth requirements are massive and even Verizon FiOS TV, which I have, couldn't do it and it's about a year old and very limited in availability.

The problem with that is there's no real standard yet. Hopefully Apple can change that with Apple TV. :)

That's going to change. Analog is going to be eliminated come 2009, freeing up lots of bandwidth. Not only that, but bandwidth savings will also be realized because of IPTV - the only channels that will stream to a TV will be what the user wants. If I want CNN, HBO and Showtime only, those will be the only channels delivered and streamed. That's a big function of IPTV, to tailor your TV experience and cut out all the noise you don't care about, like for instance....I never watch Lifetime, so why should it be streamed to me?

You're thinking of VC-1, and it's the movie studios who decide what codec they use when they encode the transfer.

you don't have to stream it. just have hard drive acting like a buffer. gig's are cheap these days. also who needs it to be the near future. it's going to takes several years for 1080p to be standard.

You misunderstood me. Verizon FiOS is a pure Fiber Optic transmission technology all the way from the source to the house. This allows for massive residential 30Mbps internets speeds and pristine HD signals. Even with that fiber optic, and yes digital, signal, it doesn't have enough bandwidth to transmit 1080p signals with Dolby True HD and DTS-HD signals. 1080p signals require twice the bandwidth of 1080i or 720p signals and Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD are both lossless pure audio technologies that require loads more in their own right. The bandwidth simply isn't there, digital or not.

M$ would be shelling out millions in royalty just to use it and that would mean having to ditch HD-DVD in order to do it, which would piss off Toshiba and leave them to deal with it which in turn would mean that they might sue Microsoft for it as well.

Buffering DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD with a HDD would impede the ability of either to provide pure lossless audio, especially when combining it with synchronized 1080p video.

Yes but that could have an adverse effect on their consoles sales, if Sony was making money off Blu Ray from MS, then they could easily throw the money they get into the production costs of the PS3 and drop the price by a good chunk which would in turn sell more PS3's.

It would probably be offset by the royalties MS would get from studios encoding Blurays in MS's VC-1 codec.

My same thought, and so what if they add-on blu-ray, they're not forcing me to get it. I mean all of these companies do business with each other on a daily basis. So what if MS picks bluy ray, Sony still uses windows on there Vaio's. You can't refuse a service that will most likely make you money. One thing for sure, you won't see a Sony made Blu Ray drive inside of a 360.

Most people are not going to care. They will care more about functionality and ease of use, and getting digital content through broadband will provide that. There is a lot of potential for it.

People seem to forget that toshiba helped design the cell processor and yet it is toshiba who has codeveloped hddvd. MS said they would support either format if it became the format of choice. There are different divisions within these companies. While it is easy to see the surface and say it is sony vs microsoft or sony vs toshiba, it is the under layers of business where toshiba and sony AND microsoft work together. Microsoft will get blueray AND still have hddvd so it will be the best choice for multiformat entertainment.

Blu-Ray is nice and all, and I have rented a few recently, but when I watched the original trilogy last night on a 50" DLP and it looked really nice. God I hope it comes out on an HD format soon. I'd be all over it.

Jeez guys, get a room.
