i agree with this, this generation has been like no other, it's too much about the graphics, you can't say a game is good on here, even if it has stellar gameplay, because someone will come along and say 'bu-bu-x game is better co it has better graphics", and if you say you prefer gameplay over graphics they just accuse you of being in denial, half the people on these boards would be well miserable playing games on a Speccy 48k, it's sad to see gaming come to this, it's more about graphics and realism these days, instead of goo old fashioned FUNdelta3074
I think it's more troubling than sad.
Development costs are ramping up because of these expectations. That is driving developers to make one size fits all, proved formula, low risk games that pump most of its budget into the eye candy that attracts attention.
Despite what people may think about PC gaming it isn't all about pushing the latest technology, the most popular games on PC are not high tech. High tech games come along when a developer thinks they are in a good position to make them; and that the investment is worth while. Crytek made Crysis because they wanted to, they could have made a mix of medium/high the max settings and it would have still looked good and played the same. But they did make it a tech pushing game, they did it because they wanted to.
Making that decision, that risk assessment, a demanded expectation of most games is damaging to the industry.
How so is it reflecting that? Demons Souls is a unique game, Valkyria Chronicals again the same. I wouldnt call Disgea 3 a master piece in graphics? Or how about Super Mario Galaxy or Naruto Broken Bonds, Halo 3 etc your putting everyone in the same boat when its far from the truth. When you refer to System Wars you have a point tho thats very true for here. Tho i think people argue graphics on here just for something to argue about. I dont think for the majority of SW posters its that important and if it was so important for the gaming public as a whole then the Wii would be dead last not the PS3. jwsoul
The evidence of the impact of such high expenses are reflected in current gen line-ups.
Cross platform development now makes up the bulk of games being sold, developers broadening their audience to accomodate development costs. Exclusive 3rd party games now make up a signficant minority, the majority of exclusive games are 1st and 2nd party titles.
It is all a response to costs, costs created as a result of technical expectations.
