*I even wanna buy it now despite Halo 3 not being out yet. I already have a Wii but I'm not endorsing Wii60 here*

1. Any major disadvantages for buying the basick pack over the premium other than HDD?
2. Are the hardware problems (red A-hole of death) still a problem?

Also to afford it I'll be traded in the majority of my handhelds games : (, but I hardly play them anyway so I shouldn't be emo about it. Might even go for the PS3 if I have enough...

The Premium pack for $100 more includes the 20GB HDD, High Def Cables, wireless controller. If your going to play Xbox games you need the HDD for backwards compatibility and who wants wired controllers.

While it may not a as reliable as the Ps3 hardware its a overall better machine. The chances of your console dying is slim... And to be honest the amount of fanboys lying about there console dying is huge. My launch died after 13 months MS replaced with a brand new one, it runs alot cooler and quieter. There is 95% chance your 360 will be fine. Newer 360's manfactured as of now are alot more reliable.

Don't listen to anybody lobbying for a system in here.  Do the research yourself and go based off of your own personal tastes in genres/games, features you want/need, price, etc.

Most people in here just want you to get the system they have or think is the best for themselves.

Apart from the lack of a hard drive the premium pack doesn't really have much more than the core. I personally prefer a corded controller. You don't get a headset with the core, or the AV cables for a HD setup. If you intend to be an avid 360 gamer I suggest you get the premium however. Since you will probably by the HDD later getting it with the premium will save you some money.

The red ring problem is meant to indicate a lack of hardware. If one of your cables is not plugged in securely you get the red lights. The red lights are basically a diagnosis of some simple do-it-yourself problems.

In summary... buy a 360... it's awesome.

Well i'm just going by the many many people that have complained about 360's breaking down and i've seen it myself. The chances are quite high that the 360 is going to break down, why do you think they are releasing a new 360 with the new chip in it so it runs cooler?

I don't know how often the red lights happen anymore, but my father and I purchased our 360's last fall and his has been doing some weird stuff. I think it's going to break down at some point. So the hardware failure rate is probably still a good bit higher than it should be. But I would definately get the premium over the core. It's pretty cheap now and often comes bundled with a lot of extra goodies. And you'll want the HD for all the downloadables.

Overall, though in your situation I'd recommend a 360. I haven't heard the rings of death thing on newer 360's. Plus if you have to trade in all your games (if you still play them) to get PS3, then that sucks. Unless there's some PS3 games that you must have, I'd go with the 360. And I'm a PS3 fan so...

p.s. whatever you do, don't buy a Core system.  If you get a 360, spring for the premium.  Unless  you never plan on downloading stuff, and if you don't mind the wired controller.

Oh you best belive there is, not only the harddrive that coms with it is worth 100 bucks but your saving over 200 dollars if you buy the premium.

2. Are the hardware problems (red A-hole of death) still a problem?

As of November 2006, there are currently no more hardware problems (mainly the red lights of beath) to been seen with the 360 so you should be fine. Plus it comes with a one year warrenty whats to be worried about?

  1. You are going to want everything the premium pack includes. It will cost you almost $200 bucks to buy it all seperately to save 100 bucks now.
  2. They are alot less of a problem then they were this time last year. Buy brand new, and get a 2 year warrantee just in case. I went through 4 core units, they were all replaced by the store or MS, but when the last one died, 5 days after my warrantee expired, I had to pay for one out of pocket.

Since it appears you are on a budget, I would suggest only going for the PS3 if you are interested in HD movies. I have one it's amazing, but it's HD centric. If you buy a 360 premium, the wireless adapter and the HD-DVD drive you will spend more on the 360 than the PS3, but if you have a SDTV the 360 is definately more affordable. Don't worry about the current lack of games on the PS3 if you choose to pick it up, thats about to change really quick.

Both are excellent systems.

EDIT: For the love of god, the I saw way too many false statements up there in this thread. Paraphrasing:

"As of Nov 2006 there are no red light issues" - If you believe MS press releases. Some 360s will still have issues, they didn't solve anything, they are getting better, but they haven't cured it.

"The Red ring is supposed to diagnose do it your self fixes" - I have a 360 sitting in my closet that would like you to use "do it your self" fixes to revive it, cuz even MS said it was dead

"Why do you think they are releasing a new chip so it runs cooler" - Every console since the PS1 has been redesigned with smaller, cooler, cheaper components and the only thing that changes on the outside is the revision number. MS is using new chips because it saves them money. The system overheats, because of flaws in the manufacturing process, not because the designed hardware was flawed. My new 360 has the same chips as the old one, and it does not get hot and is much more quiet.

Yeah also ask yourself if you need WiFi to play online because that's an extra $100 for 360.  If not, you're good.

I know roughly 6 Xbox 360 owners and not one of them, including myself, have experienced any problems. You should look it up on the internet, do not take people's negative opinions too seriously as people here have a tendacy to lie in order to put down another console.

yeah 360 has a good amount of games out right now, i got bored of my hh games to and sold them to get a 360:D. i was sad at first but after playing gears of war, and cod3, cod2 i loved it. i didnt even miss the games i sold after that moment though. lol. and for you second q., dont worry about it, lots of fanboys lie about that stuff, its a 5% chance that your 360 is going to get the ring of death. MS givees you a free 1 year rebate to, so you dont have to worry about it.

Xbox360 = Better machine. Get the 2 year warranty from Bestbuy (that is the longest one I could find). I personally avoided it because if the Xbox360 is having this many problems now, god knows what it's going to be like after I abuse it for 2 years. (By abuse, I mean play it a lot. Not suffocate it with a towel to see if it catches on fire)

PS3 = Not as good (right now...when the games come out, I think the PS3 backlash will abate). But the hardware runs oh-so-smooth. And that's why I picked it.

It really hinges on if you want to play games RIGHT now and what your risk tolerance is for hardware failure. I absolutely cannot stand hardware failure. Even extra disc noise sends a wave of nausea through me.

1. You should get the Premium because it'd be much more worth it than the core. If you were going to get a core, you would need a $40 memory card to save games so it'd be much more worth it to spend $60 more to get a premium 2. I hadn't had any problems with hardware problems -- neither do any of my friends that own 360s -- just get an extended warrenty just to be on the safe side.

1.  If you don't have the HDD, you'll need to buy a memory card which adds to the cost.  Also the wireless controller is really too nice to not have.  My advice is buy the premium and get some of the used 360 games like Cod3, Fight Night if budget is a concern.

2.  You get a 1 year warranty.  If you have a faulty system, it's likely the problem will show up before then.

There are still some quality issues, but not as many as the system originally had. The best bet would be to wait to see if the new 65 chips come out soon. That would be a great benefit as it'd reduce heat. If you don't want to wait, then go for it. There's no difference between the premium n basic pack other then the xtras included in the premium pack which you can buy seperately. The only "perk" is the premium has a chrome disc tray and the basic and a white disc tray

WTF???

They both have 512MB of usable RAM. 256 for video, 256 for system on the PS3. 512 shared for the 360. The system RAM on the PS3 is also clocked at 3.2GHz, where as the 360 uses 700Mhz RAM. That extra 10MB of DRAM in the 360, is a frame buffer, it cannot be accessed like the rest. Even if a developer decides to allocate more of the RAM for video or system, it's at a cost to the other. If anything the 360's RAM is more flexable, but there certainly isn't anymore of it and it's still slower when it's used for system processes.

As for the GPU, that is still to be determined. You're not a developer, you don't have hands on time with the card, you can only speak about things you have heard, and most of them could be posting the same crap that you are, which is unfounded. The PS3 has a more than adequate GPU and both have more potential than developers will ever use this gen. And thats a fact, just like it was for every console before it. the industry moves on before a console gets maxxed out.

If someone asks for advice, you're expected to give them facts and your opinion. Not made up, unreasearched, fanboy misconceptions.

1) If you do not have the HDD, you cannot use XBL, thus missing out on a plethora of community related features. You do not get a wireless gamepad.

2) There will always be hardware problems until they replace the CPU with the new 65nm ones. Just follow the instructions in the user manual and make sure you read the warranty and learn about "implied warranty." Getting a in-store extra warranty may also not hurt. After my 9600XT went an I got a free X1650Pro... I will never doubt "product replacement plans" ever again.

Go with PS3 if you want reliable hardware and good games down the road.  Go with 360 if you want games now.
