SCE president Kaz Hirai says that Sony may consider the possibility of shelling out to secure exclusive third party releases for PlayStation 3, while the company will be pushing for exclusive content on PS3 versions of multiplatform titles.

I guess Sony have had a change in attitute, unlike last year when they were boasting about how they don't need 3rd Party exclusives and other nonsense. I'm glad they are more commited to the PS3 towards making it a great system. and not a movie player.

Agreed, Sony have really become more humble over the past year. I suppose being in 3rd place has knocked some sense into them. But I suspect they were paying for exclusives all along eg, MGS4, FF13, Tekken 6.

This gen Sony just can`t rely on game dev to make exclusive game for them......

To me losing GTA4 & DMC4 really hurting PS3 a lot and it should be a lesson to them to be more aggressive this gen

I think it's about time they started paying for exclusives, thers no point being humble anymore coz microsoft will just snatch the exclusives.

I don't think MGS4 was paid to be exclusive, didn't Kojima give a few reasons why it was PS3 exclusive?

Yes, imaging having GTA4 exclusive release so close to MGS4, that would have brought over many gamers and sales.

what's funny is they did pay for exclusivity of MGS4......so in effect they have always considered paying for exclusives. I think the key difference is they will be actively looking for titles....which they really were not looking for new exclusives (rather relying on old exclusives like FF or MG series).

For a console that is supposed to last 10 years I don't think PS3 is in that bad of a position right now. Unlike last year this year started really well for the PS3 and reached 10 million much quicker then I thought. I'm glad Sony will work along side most 3rd party developers to help them get better use of Blu-ray tech and the Cell to make PS3 titles on the whole much better.

In Sept 07 I was told directly by a Konami sales rep that Sony had paid for the exclusivity of MGS4. Of course publicly they are not going to announce anything but privately they admitted money had changed hands. Also I was told directly from Namco that Tekken was not a for sure exclusive for the PS3......maybe Sony is looking to buy it now.

I see. Well Microsoft do most the big buying out there anyway, i think Sony should stop being stubborn and hold on to the exclusives they are losing.

It's about time for Sony to start Microsoft has been using this tactic for ages since they barely have a first party. This combined with Sony's first and second party developers should start to give Sony more fuel in the war.

Tekken IIRC is under mutual benefit contract, as every Tekken arcade machine is PS-based. Sony provides components for the arcade boards, Namco keeps the game on the PS only.

they bash MS for doing this and then realise they have to themselvs.

i personally think that if no money has changed hands that MGSIV MAY be on 360. may.

Yeah, that's what I heard. But why hasn't PS3 exclusivity been confirmed for Tekken 6? I assume it will be, it's just odd how Namco haven't confirmed it.

Yay more bribes in the video game industry! It would be nicer if MS stopped rather than Sony starting with it too. A few exclusives that can use the specific consoles attributes ( Like the blue-ray on the ps3 ) is nice but its better for all of us if most tiles comes out multiplat.

No it wont beacsue MS started this bs and now Sony has to follow in order to compete. If MS developed some god titles of thier own and actually brought something to the gaming industry of their own things would have been better to begin with. Now they are turning gaming into another hollywood.

Tekken IIRC is under mutual benefit contract, as every Tekken arcade machine is PS-based. Sony provides components for the arcade boards, Namco keeps the game on the PS only.

Yeah, that's what I heard. But why hasn't PS3 exclusivity been confirmed for Tekken 6? I assume it will be, it's just odd how Namco haven't confirmed it.

I expect a confirmation at or around E3 time in July. Really I axpect T6 to be PS3 exclusive but wouldn't mind if it's not.

I really dont like this idea though, I wish that MS and Sony didnt pay for exclusives. I understand it's business, but from a consumer stand point, it almost makes a one console future look tempting.

Imagine if RSV2, GRAW2, Oblivion, and Condemned 2 were all exclusive to the PS3 or 360. Alot of people would miss out on alot of good games. I would just rather see 3rd parties make multiplat games than I would to see them all get bought for each system. Only way to win is to buy both consoles, but the cost of gaming is going up anyway.

Now, I know people are going to say "BUT MGS4 IS EXCLUSIVE TO THE PS3 AND YOU DONT HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THAT" well, I dont. I dont think Sony paid for it, I'm pretty sure if Konami wanted to they could make it multiplat. I own both consoles, so exclusives dont really matter to me at this point, but this is the only gen I've ever owned every system, and probably will be my last.

Have cows though? All those people who accused MS of "buying gaming" while noble Sony just got games out of love.

I by no means consider Sony noble, but I dont think they've paid Konami for MGS4 or for FF13.

I dunno, I think they definately bribed Konami for MGS4- they'd be insane not to. I'm guessing that MS tried to get the game on the 360 and a bidding war ensued in which Sony won and managed to keep it exclusive. Just speculation though.

I'm less sure about FF13, I don't think they paid for that.

I think sony this gen is starting to realize something nintendo realized back in the n64 days. You can't relay on 3rd party developers for they flock to where the money is. They do not care about you just about which console can make them the most money. This is why if you look at nintendo they make so much games for the wii. So much good games. It looks like they could care less about 3rd parties.

Depending on how much money we're talking about, it's just too little too late for Sony.

How? the console has only been out over a year? Theres still Plenty of time. They need to Resecure there former Exclusives IMO. Like the next GTA game, the Next DMC game, maybe even the next RE game (if those games come out this gen of course)

late ? doubt it keep in mind that PS3 has only been out for a year and a half and like the PS1 & 2 before it, PS3 will have a lifespan of atleast 8 years if not more. I'm glad Sony realised this before it actually gets too late, you know around 2010/11. PS is still a powerful brand and helped PS3 last year even with that stupid price tag, any other console and it would have just died with that kind of a price but people bought the PS3 last year which is amazing. This year PS3 has a right price point and great titles coming along with other great features, Sony didn't lose many exclusives and now they can get even more exclusive titles due to the PS3 being in a better position WW plus the fact that Sony now considering to pay for exclusives

holy hypocrisy batman!

they bash MS for doing this and then realise they have to themselvs.

thegoldenpoo

Well I think buying exclusives is bad for consumers because it limits consumer and developer choice, but in the end consumers vote with their wallets and unfortunately a lot have chosen to support MS. It's smart of Sony to start doing the same. You have said with your wallet you support it.
