Hitman: Absolution director Tore Blystad has told OPM that, 20 per cent of the players will see the last level of the game. Its horrible to know. It makes the people working on it really really sad. The surprising number was revealed while discussing the use of metrics to record player behaviour. We are using metrics a lot more now than we did, for good and for bad, explains Blystad. The general player will probably never even finish the game, which is very sad. Or they might only play through it once, but the game is built for the people who want to go back through every single level and get all the stuff out of it. Its built to last, rather than be a one-off experience. When I asked him about what makes a good or a bad metric, he replied: Knowing that 20% of the players will see the last level of the game. Its horrible to know. It makes the people working on it really really sad. Why does he think the completion rate is so low? I guess people cant commit to taking all those hours to finish one product, they get tired of it. Its not just for this game, its for any game. Hitman Absolution preview screens PS3And, while the temptation might be there to shift levels around get all the best stuff up front, its not that easy explains Blystad. Its very difficult when something is constructed to fit into a larger story to move things too much around. I think in some of the previous Hitman games that that might have been the case that some levels were moved earlier, because they were more catchy or interesting. For us it hasnt really been that easy, because the story is really tying all the levels together, so theyre still coming in the same order, more or less, that they were designed. The challenge, then, is making the player want to stick around. A battle we have is that we want to put all this stuff in, but we also know that because the game is up to the player theres a lot of people that will never ever see it. The only thing we can do is incentivise replayability in different ways. The good news is that whatever IO are doing with Absolution is playing off. In the user tests we have they actually tell us that the replayability factor in itself, its the situation or the humour thats the reason people actually go back through the levels, they want to see more, they want to find these things, which makes us very happy, because it takes a lot of time and effort to get these things in.

It may sound like a crazy figure, but no doubt it's true. I rarely finish games unfortunately.

I don't doubt that, I actually never did finish Hitman 2 when it started ramping up in difficulty and my perfectionism prevented me from getting a Silent Assassin score without using a guide (which I absolutely refuse to do for the series).

I will definitely finish this game though if its great, I finished Blood Money (and started playing it again on Professional), so I'll be one of those 20%.

I would NEVER buy a game without an intention to finish it at some stage. I think that's a crazy figure if it's true. Why do you all buy games if you don't finish them? or is it just Hitman games?

All games. You really think it's that surprising? I don't think anyone goes in with the intention of not finishing, but honestly never just grown tired of a game or abandoned it?

I try to finish all my games. I have finish 8/14 of my games. I know I will never finish Dead Rising 2 because it is so damn boring. I barely got started with that game before getting bored. Wish I never wasted my money on it.

I don't finish everything right away but I try to do it eventually. Unless it's a long RPG like Dragon Age, I may never "finish" that one.

I used to force myself to finish games I don't like but now I don't bother. If they make a game that is good enough then people will finish it.

I have grown tired of games and gone to play another new one that I have but I will always come back to finish the game at least once. If I have no other new games I will go the whole way through first time.

I woudl feel too much like I wasted money if I never finished them

That's not a shocking figure. I feel like plenty of games become such a chore well after their half way point. And that's including the short games.

I dunno, based on steam achievements, 40% of people beat Deus Ex HR. Looking at New Vegas, probably something like 30% of the people beat the game.

My guess is their number is based on an average, so I'm sure there are games in their sample size that went over the average. Just like there are plenty that are probably below the average.

This seems about right. A lot of people might be put of with the trial and error gameplay. That and the missions of the past games felt like random unrelated events even though they were tied together by an over-arching story.
I will definetely be a part of that 20% though, absolutely love the hitman series. Though I am hoping all the missions in this game have some sort of significance to the plot.

If you look at the steam achievements % of those that finished HL Ep 2 for instance, that figure is basically spon on. Or that PC Gamers are bad at games, dont play them, only overclock just to play Crysis. >:[.

I am the exact opposite, so I just cannot figure out why you would pay money for a video game and only experience, say, 50% of it.

The only game I have started and not finished was Metroid Prime: Echoes.

Just look at the achievment statistics for any given game on Steam and you'll see this kind of thing is true. A solid 10-20% of people who buy games on steam never even play the game! It sucks, but if Absolution is actually a true sequel, I won't be one of them.

That was one of the worst, most incoherent articles I've read in a while. Probably not a native English speaker. On topic, if only 20% of people finish, that's not entirely the gamer's fault. It's the developers if someone loses all motivation to continue playing. As someone said above, if a game is well made people will finish it.
