Yup MS is taking applications for Hololens and its $3000 to get it. So I'm wondering just how much this thing will go down in price once the have one for consumers and just how long it will take, I'm thinking 2018 at the earliest.

Who's applying for the dev kit Hololens lol

I have no interest in the product (or anything where I have to put something on my face).

Incredibly pricey kit though.

Not really a device built for gaming. It's more of a tool to enhance productivity in a lot of professions. I could see a lot of engineering applications where you can scale up CAD models to a 1:1 scale in 3D space. That would help immensely with designing large machines right the first time and would save my company literally tens of thousands a year.

I'll still give Hololens a try. It was never meant to be used for gaming in any way, it's more for field work and I like to try it out when I'm at work just for charting, so Hololens has peak my interest.

@lamprey263: Lol that's some really Blade Runner-esque shit right there.

On topic: I think that the device will have a premium, high-end feel to it and won't be a cheap, unreliable piece of crap and the price of the devkit reflects that.

I'm sure the future will see consumer grade Hololens products that don't do as much as the full fledged Enterprise model but will be small to wear (glasses small) and give day to day hud functions. In the future anyway.

The problem with Hololens is that it is limited by reality. It works with the surroundings around you. Also, the graphics stand out from the real world which kills the immersion. In VR, you can create a cohesive world that really pulls you in and you can develop any type of world you can imagine. While Hololens is cool, it is just a gimmick when it comes to gaming.

Damn, that's really not that bad considering how much console dev kits have always been in the past. Hell, a Wii U dev kit starts at around $2500. This is a dev kit, not the consumer device. I doubt Hololens will cost this upon release. I do expect an entry price of over $1000.

@davillain-: Microsoft has said it will be a business/professional and entertainment tool. I'm sure it will cater more to the business/professional side, with some neat things like MineCraft also on it.

Make me wonder when exactly the release date is to consumer and if it will enhance the Xbox One experience or enhance the next Microsoft console experience.

I'm def interested to see where this thing goes and how well it does what it does. But it's def not a Xbox peripheral!

@iambatman7986: I too feel it will be in the $1000 plus range but if Microsoft wants it to be successful and actually get it in the consumers hands it needs to be in smart phone price range of $600-700 or maybe even make it 4G capable and release it via cell phone providers at a monthly fee/contract price

@Shewgenja: go ahead but it wont really matter, everyone already expects Hololens to be more advanced than Morpheus so of course it will cost more. Hololens is more advanced than Morpheus also, so it would make sense for it to cost more. Like everybody is saying it will most likely be around 1000 bucks, but whether or not the general public buys it or not MS will make tons of money off of this just based on the productivity alone and what it can bring to the workplace. The general public may not buy it but who cares when you have a deal with NASA, while you see it as a Morpheus competitor MS does not, instead they see the money they can make off of corporations that will spend hundreds of thousands if not millions on the device to help increase productivity. So MS may loose the gaming war with this one but they continue to win the "We know how to make money" war.

Corporate $$$$$$$$ over Gaming $$$

Honestly I'm a lot more interested as to how it will be used outside of gaming. To market it as some VR companion to the One would be selling it incredibly short.

I merely stated I am bookmarking the thread. So, when the official price announcement for PSVR comes out, I have this wonderful bed of quotes from everyone saying 3k is alright.. and let's not get it misconstrued, that's what's going on here.

Don't be mad at me for anything. This is ya'll waving it around in System Wars without considering the consequences. You already have slimdog running damage control and making this about Company Wars, too. Cool story bros.

To be honest, I remember at E3 2015 that MS show off HoloLens for Minecraft that takes advantage of it and that's too is gaming.

If the price is right and depending if it's really useful to fettle around it, I'm all in. I can see myself using it for virtual Anime girl lol.

Here is the Hololens demo shown today.....while the gameplay looks very slow and boring....the concept still intrigues me.

@Shewgenja: I agree with you this is not SW material since hololens is not game centric. But DC my post was not, it is the truth, and basically says that this is not a device dedicated for gaming. Once again let me say I agree that this is not really something that should be SW material( I honestly think MS should use Oculus as way to bring VR the X1.),but saying you are going to bookmark for when PSVR releases at 400 is just as stupid. Even if Sony sold a VR headset to every PS owner, it would not make them as much as MS will make from Hololens. But does it matter? No, because these devices target different types of consumers, and both should be pretty successful in what they do. Sony will have a lot more competition than MS, but they also have the benefit of having over 20 mil PS users to bank on. Imagine how many of them don't game on Pc so Oculus would not be an option. Hololens will do fine and so will Morpheus.

A playstation 4 dev kit costs around $2500.

$3000 for a dev kit for a product with far more advanced, prototype technology is not very expensive.

Did you people actually think this would be $500 or something?

It's not even a gaming-centric device and the possible applications for this field of technology are staggering.

You are randomly comparing Appletinis and Orange Tractors.

Then for good measure you added in a straw-man assertion that has nothing to do with the price of opium flavored tea in China.

I'm not part of any group of people, either.

I can see you are incredibly enthused & excited for this upcoming tech eye wear product. Godspeed on your upcoming purchase.

@NVIDIATI: I didn't complain about the price. Hololens seems like a more technically complicated device than the Rift, but I'm sure you recall how much they were asking for that dev kit.

Can you tell me why it should cost as much as it does?

I would assume some of the cost is from proprietary hardware that's not manufactured at scale + additional software. Hololens is a full Windows computer with a CPU, GPU and, what Microsoft calls, an HPU (holographic processing unit). It also has various optical sensors and a projection display. On top of that, there are other factors that can bring up the cost of a development kit.

The Oculus Rift DKs are not full computers and they use budget parts. Heck, the dev kit 2 used the display off of a Galaxy Note 3 (literally).

3k for a dev kit is not alot of money. Its just enough keep the hobbist away, but not make it cost prohibitive for the people/companies that want to use it.

I have no intention of purchasing the product. I'm not a developer.

Simply stating that $3000 is not very expensive for a dev kit for a potentially revolutionary product based on prototype technology.

It's quite reasonable.

How much did you think it was going to cost?

I think my reaction was born from the disappointment that it doesn't fit into the hobbyist budget. It's been a lot of fun to see people use Rift in all their various ways.

@Shewgenja: I couldn't and wouldn't want to drop a grand on it. It would have to be really amazing and awesome tech that I would use often to drop $600-700. But if it's 4G based or what ever and is sold through cellular providers like some tablets and I can get it at a monthly fee or contract price I'm all over it regardless of it's price lol

That's fair. I can respect that. 6-700 is a good baseline for a virtual tech imho.
