Horizon MMO/Live Service game Cancelled

Haven't seen this posted.

If true, its good to see Sony backtracking on these games, but hard to see considering a lot of the studio's will now have to take time spinning up new projects.

This wasn't a first party studio, but I'm sure it is still tens of millions in sunk costs.

Summary:

• The Horizon MMORPG has reportedly been canceled in late 2024.
• Code-named Project H, the MMO game is said to have been in development at NCSoft since at least late 2022.
• Sony is understood to have canceled the project following a viability review. Guerrilla's own Horizon multiplayer game is still believed to be in the works.
• Sony has canceled its rumored Horizon MMO, some newly surfaced evidence suggests. The supposedly shelved project is believed to have been the only upcoming Horizon title that wasn't in development at Guerrilla Games, the Dutch studio that created the franchise.

Good. Would be nice not to hear about the IP for a decade or 2.

Seems a shame to completely cancel Twisted Metal though. It actually makes sense as a live service title. Could maybe been repackaged into something more traditional...?

Is Marathon next? Maybe it would be better to have a story based campaign, with a spinoff multiplayer mode, instead of a multiplayer-only game. The campaigns can be used to hold player interest as they get used to the multiplayer and give it a solid try. Launching games as mp-only seems more risky. Even Fortnite is adding more of a variety of game styles to hold player interest, and an offline mode to support some of its game modes.

I agree, Twisted Metal actually fits really well and I would definitely play it.

The question is whether Sony would have been willing to spend the marketing resources to introduce to new players. The IP was popular when I was young, which was decades ago lol.

Would be cool so see the skins and power ups they could come up with.

You know, that actually doesn't sound too bad. The Horizon world could work well for a MMORPG. Oh well.

Playstation will take years to recover from this.

The live service white whale pursuit had to end before it destroyed Playstation.

Years of Bend and BluePoint's work down the drain man, it's absolutely painful. I'm heartbroken, we didn't have more first party game because Jim Ryan ordered Playstation studios to work on all those abominations, Concord's failure was the wake up call.

Sony needs to go back to doing what it does best. If they really want some Live Service studios they can acquire Arrowhead and keep Bungie.

Pickings looking more and more slim for the PS5 in the next few years. All this time wasted for all these cancelled games.

agreed.. the potential roadmap for PlayStation Studios is looking sparce thanks to having to start over on different projects due to cancelled games..

this could lead to rushed games as the business side of things pushes for return on investments.. rushed games can lead to flops.. flops can lead to erosion of consumer loyalty.. Xbox knows all about that process..

i guess PlayStation fanboys can wait and hope for Xbox to port some games over in the meantime.. the sheer irony is entertaining though.. that and the lack of "concern" from the Concern Crew.. 😏

I had no idea the next Horizon as gonna be a live service. All I want to know is, when is the final (3rd) instalment of Horizon coming out to finish the trilogy so that Guerilla Games can start something new? All these spin-offs is making me losing interest as it is despite I'm still playing the remaster.

They realized no one would play it because it's Sony.

What a disastrous gen for Sony. Too bad too, I really like the PS5 as a console.

Maybe Sony realized that gamers want good singleplayer games instead of shit live service MMO garbage.

The original source to the news has clarified that "project H" is not the horizon mmo.

Good news is I'm sure Sony will learn from this. Bad news is Sony made games will be dry for a bit.

You mean when Sony apparently finished 2nd that gen with a few millions more PS3's sold over 360, but we need to leave an * as MS stopped reporting sales before the gen was up.

I think it's good that Sony is throwing away all their money. Their games might be less movie with hollywood actors in the future then. Maybe they'd be forced to create gameplay instead of having people watch games. Would be great.

Yeah, the same Sony (at the time) had more creative IP’s than the cancelled games from MS that gen.

Unfortunately for you your fanbase don't care about creativity, they just want the next third person action-adventure game with 7hrs of cinematics and walking talking segments.

Yikes! So many cancelled games. Getting rid of Jim Ryan was the perfect move. If Sony actually gets their shit together, I might be excited for them in the upcoming years. Until then, I'm done with them. Not buying their consoles or games.
