Honestly for a $10 upgrade this ain't so bad and leagues above a resolution upgrade like The Last of Us is doing.

If Days Gone is also a $10 upgrade I'll probably grab that too.

Features include:

  • Dualsense support (aiming feels way more natural with mouse and keyboard as you're hitting weak spots all the time imho, but still a nice-to-have)
  • Enhanced textures
  • Enhanced shaders
  • Higher density foliage and more foliage overall
  • Mocapped interactions
  • New quests (I was probably lucid, my mistake)
  • Enhanced character models (sans fat Aloy)
  • Made by Nixxes

(the consoomer in me was ready to blow $60 on this just to spend a few more minutes with Rost ♥)

There is a mod for the original game that makes her gain a few pounds:

I've played Horizon Zero Dawn so many times it's like I know the game by heart, when I first saw the trailer I immediately noticed the extra draw distance and expanded foliage (more diversity, it's more interactable).

All of these things are 'nice to haves'

a $10 pricetag for a remaster nobody asked for..

people are definitely free to spend their money however they want but keep in mind that you're voting with your wallet and Sony is listening..

I don't mind it as a cheap optional upgrade. If it was only sold separately at full price, I would definitely not be happy with it. Sony went about it the right way. I will be getting it myself as I have had HZD on my PC for years now and only played about 8 hours. I have been meaning to replay it as my first playthrough was on PS4 Pro. I want to replay the original before I play HFW. So, I am getting this cheap upgrade to play the best version.

I'll be getting it in due time, i'd rather they skip the remaster for the PS5 and do it for the next one or the one after that. HZD still looks amazing. PS3 games need remastering, PS1 and 2 need remakes.

Yeah these upgrade paths are quite comon on PC and have been great since Steam was a thing and you get to keep your library across many gens.

Darksiders > Darksiders remaster

Sleeping Dogs > Sleeping Dogs remaster

Crysis 1&2&3> Crysis remasters

They are not often huge difference but if you can get free or cheap remasters, and don't have to like you said buy the whole game over again, I think it's a nice option to have.

I guess it's the work that has to be put into them.

This is Nixxes behind the scenes porting the game to the HFW engine and turning the settings to 11.

PS2 or even PS3 games will require a lot more work.

Also Sony has already said that PC gamers want higher visual fidelity and that they aren't interested in doing ports for say Uncharted 1-3 (which is why they chose 4) as they feel these games no longer look up to standards.

I'm not saying this, it's the publishers that think gamers think that way.

by all means, enjoy..

i'm simply saying that there are better uses of recourses than remastering games that seemingly just came out only a few years ago (PC release was in 2020) and still look great..

i personally don't mind remasters of older titles from generations past.. but this is pure milkage.. and, again, Sony is taking note..

we gamers complain that we're tired of remasters of old games and would rather publishers and developers concentrate on new games.. yet when a remaster is announced, especially one this blatant, it's "this ain't so bad" and "i don't mind".. 🤷‍♂️

$10 is nothing. People spend more on deluxe editions of games that come with some bullshit skins or whatever. This remaster offers more than that. Had this been a full price game only, it would be some bad milking as this is ultimately an unnecessary upgrade. However, due to the pricing, there is not much to complain about. I now view it as a nice bonus.

This is what Nixxes does anyway. They are working on multiple projects at a time. The investment is minimal from Sony and it employs people to work on these upgrades. They will easily make up the cost of development and they are not taking away resources from Guerrilla. Guerrilla is still working on whatever they are working on.

Sony's output has been lacking for a while. So, a remaster is going to draw negative attention even when it is fairly priced. Had Sony been pumping out bangers regularly, this wouldn't be getting the attention that it is. I guess that is kinda of the point of it too. It is providing some filler while people wait for the new games.

I’ll grab the $10 upgrade. I picked up Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition for $20 Canadian and enjoyed it. Second best Assassin’s Creed game I have ever played. Wouldn’t mind playing it again with the upgrades.

I loooove the story in Horizon Zero Dawn, it's my kind of scifi and keeps you engaged until the end. Horizon Forbidden West on the other hand is a lot harder for me to get into, but I do plan on finishing it along with its DLC.

that's good to hear, how's aiming with the dualsense working for you? Do you find it hard hitting the weakspots? I know especially HZD is like that. In Forbidden West it's more about figuring out their weaknesses and hitting them with the right weapon.

all of that misses the point.. the mileage someone gets out of $10 certainly varies but i agree, it's a relatively small amount of money..

the point is that Sony is milking a loyal fanbase out of that $10 for a remaster to a game that has already been enhanced more than once since its release and still looks amazing..

if they announce a $10 remaster for Horizon 2 next month, everything you said above still applies.. but it still doesn't change the idea that Horizon 2 was just released relatively recently, no one was asking for an upgrade for Horizon 2, and that upgrade is just shameless milking of the IP..

that type of attitude to this milking will only ensure that Sony (and others) will take note and continue with these needless remasters.. and maybe we wouldn't need so much "filler" if they were concentrating on new games instead..

Ok normally I won't make a big deal out of these $10 enhancement but you do bring up a good point.

Instead of Sony doing it once and doing it right they end up remastering, updating and improving a game multiple times. And you could say: well Valve does that too, but yeah Valve is at least consistent. With Sony you never know: is it a free upgrade, a paid upgrade path, or a full price release:

  • Horizon original PS4 release
  • Horizon upgrade for PS4 pro
  • Horizon unlocked framerate for PS5
  • Horizon on PC
  • Horizon Remaster for PS5 and PC

And same thing with The Last of Us:

  • The Last of us original PS3 release
  • The Last of us remaster for PS4
  • The Last of us remaster for PS4 improved for PS4 pro
  • The Last of us remake for PS5
  • The Last of us remake for PC
  • The Last of us remake for PS5 pro

It would help if Sony was at least more consistent like some other companies are. Like for Rockstar: yeah you know you have to buy the full game again. Nobody complains.

It is all about circumstances. The whole point of this remaster is to bring the original game on par with the tech and presentation offered in Horizon 2. I am not against this as long as they are offering it at a decent price. It is an optional purchase after all and they are not trying to rip people off. I am someone who cares about quality and the technical aspects of games. So, this is right up my alley.

Another way to look at it is... they care enough about this franchise that they are willing to invest in it to have a certain level of quality across the titles.

The milking comes down to pricing. Since the pricing is fair for what they are offering, I don't consider it milking.

i normally don't mind remasters and i typically prefer options.. options are good.. 👍

but yeah, your assessment above is in-line with the point i was making.. this Horizon remaster is just shameless milking and arguably a waste of game development recourses..

again, if anyone wants to purchase this game, feel free.. enjoy.. but i don't personally agree with this strategy from Sony and despite owning the game, i won't be supporting this upgrade with a purchase..

I'm usually one to go "well I got mods for this" as I've been tremendously enjoying Bioshock and Batman games like they are brand new with HD texture mods.

But in this case, yeah this ain't a reshade. The lighting got massively enhanced, the draw distance is way better, way more foliage variety... It's a nice package for 10 and like you say: a choice people can make wether to spend the 10 or not.

It also looks like it has more effort put into it than the Uncharted 10 dollar upgrade on PS5 or the TLOU 2 10 dollar upgrade on PS5.

But it's Nixxes so I was expecting top-of-the-line and that is what we got :)

Fable 2 was never the foliage king. Crysis came out before it and destroyed it.

They should at least allow the option, other games with character creators too. Get those next gen physics on that too

all of that misses the point.. the mileage someone gets out of $10 certainly varies but i agree, it's a relatively small amount of money..

the point is that Sony is milking a loyal fanbase out of that $10 for a remaster to a game that has already been enhanced more than once since its release and still looks amazing..

if they announce a remaster for Horizon 2 for $10 next month, everything you said above still applies.. but it still doesn't change the idea that Horizon 2 was just released relatively recently, no one was asking for an upgrade for Horizon 2, and that upgrade is just shameless milking of the IP..

The milking comes down to pricing and frequency.. frequency being the part of the equation that i'm citing when it comes to milking..

the game has already been enhanced and/or re-released several times.. it's just milking at this point.. according to your logic, they should release yet another Horizon: Zero Dawn remaster once they finally get around to making Horizon 3 in order "to bring the original game on par with the tech and presentation offered in Horizon 3".. as long as it's just another $10, who cares right?..

and then there'll be the Horizon 2 remaster to bring Horizon 2 "on par with the tech and presentation offered in Horizon 3"..

where is the line drawn?..

at some point, people have to vote with their wallets.. which is all i was saying at the beginning of this back-and-forth..

@Antwan3K: People can draw their own line. As I said, it is optional. If people don't care or appreciate these upgrades, they can choose not to buy them. For me, as long as they are reasonably priced and I see value in them, I will buy them. The upgraded visuals and redone animations for cutscenes and conversations is worth it for me. NPC conversations stood out as being bad in the original game. Now they won't stand out in a bad way. This will lead to better immersion and enjoyment of the game.

Ah ok, for a 10 bucks upgrade....fair enough. It looks like a pretty comprehensive upgrade. I won't be getting it myself as I already completed the game. But that makes more sense than remastering it and asking for full price across the board.

I am all for mods, but that is a pretty shortsighted view of what the remaster is actually offering. There aren't mods that offer everything that the remaster is doing. Also, LOL at the PSN comment. Never gave a shit about this and it is funny how people make such a big deal about it with various Sony ports.

I am Canadian, but yeah, that sucks that there isn't PSN support in your country. Have you tried getting around the issue with a VPN?

So I should pay for a VPN to get my 900 game Steam account banned just for the opportunity to give money to Sony? No thanks.

You can create a separate account that you use just with the VPN. Also, if you live in a country that doesn't have PSN, a VPN will probably come in handy for other things too. I would imagine PSN is not the only online obstacle you face. Either way, there are work arounds for you. The game is not completely blocked off from you.

You are missing BassMan's point. This isn't a ground up Remake of Horizon Zero Dawn and if it was and priced $70, then we'd got a problem here.

This is a Remastered only and hardly cost development as Remasters are cheaper to do than Remakes. And this is a $10 optional anyway. The only thing new were getting on a Horizon game is the Lego version which is retailing Zero Dawn's story. I wasn't gonna upgrade to this but I now see the major difference between the original to remastered. I'll pay $10 as I've been wanting to replay the game anyway and it is in line with Forbidden West's gameplay at that.

Again, this isn't a Remake, this is a Remastered.

I wouldn't mind playing this again for $10 just for the updated NCP interactions alone. I overall enjoyed the original, but damn I hated those NPCs lol. Always killed the immersion for me

on that we agree..

my point being there is a clear disconnect between gamers saying "i'm tired of all these remasters" only to say "oh well, it's $10 so i guess it's not that bad" once the remaster is released.. the message is fairly loud and clear, and Sony has listened..

it's similar to how people complained about the annualized Call of Duty strategy and how the quality declined yet everyone still went out to buy the new Call of Duty every year.. 🤷‍♂️

Sony pushing remasters as "filler" is already a thing at this point.. Next, they'll be planning out remasters as a core part of their release schedule instead of making new smaller games like AstroBot..

i don't even know what conversation you were reading.. but you're way off the mark..

i know the difference between a remaster and a remake.. i know that it's only $10 and optional.. none of that addresses my point..

i also know this is a safer cash grab for Sony than doing something new.. and the fact that this is clear milkage of an IP and a cash grab does nothing but encourage Sony to continue with a strategy centered around remasters as long as people continue to buy them..

and you know what?.. why not?.. Sony would be just providing their customers something they want.. but on that same note, gamers should stop complaining about all these remasters that are planned and being released if that's what they want..

@BassMan: Might as well just get the free version at that point, if you know what I mean.
