Horizon Zero Dawn director hopes to have Forbidden West out this year

To set the record straight, we asked game director Mathijs de Jonge if Horizon Forbidden West was still on track to release this year, or if things had shifted away from that timeframe. "The development is on track,” de Jonge tells Game Informer. "The thing is, these are just strange times that we're all in and we have never finalized and shipped a game under these kinds of circumstances. So we are constantly calculating our schedules and looking at, ‘Okay, where are we?’ and ‘Are there any unforeseen things that might happen?’ We just want to be super confident when we announce the release date, that we're actually going to hit it. So we just need a little bit more time, and then we can come back with a final release date.”

So there you have it. Horizon Forbidden West hasn't been delayed out of 2021, but it's also not a "sure thing" for launching this year either. Given everything that's happened with COVID-19 and how studios have had to alter how they make games, it's understandable that Guerrilla Games is being cautious about listing a specific date until it's absolutely sure it can deliver on it. At least we know the team at Guerrilla wants to have confidence in the date provided. Hopefully, we'll know more soon regarding a date.

Wow, if Sony can have Returnal, Ratchet and Clank, AND Horizon in one year, that would go down as one of the all time great launch line ups. You think there's a good chance it'll happen, SW? Or does he know more than he's letting on?

It's been said from Indie developers to AAA studios that the real delays were going to be seen this year and 2022 because of Covid-19. Any games that were released last year were already in post production and it still took them everything getting it over the line. Gamers are forgetting things like voice actors not being able to travel or get in the studio to record lines, and anything to do with an orchestra has been scrapped since March 2020. Anyways, delays are always good for games, literally no developer will want another Cyberpunk 2077 situation on their hands and if HFW needs more time, I support their decision to delay the game as I got way more games to play on PC and same goes for my Switch.

From what we've seen of forbidden west it looks promising of releasing this year. The game looked in good shape.

Kind of comes across more like there may be a pretty good chance of it being delayed to be honest. Having said that I never have a problem with games getting delayed. I can always find plenty of other games to keep myself occupied until a game that I’m waiting for is released. Plus it’s always better to delay a game then to rush it to market.

I still don't get what is Sony's big game for 2021 Holidays if it isn't Horizon.

Maybe they'll announce something at E3.

I do agree that if Horizon2 were to come out, it would greatly increase the quality of the launch line up. Lets just hope that GoW2 is for Spring 2022, so it too can fit in there, and if it does, this would be the greatest launch line up in gaming history.

It's Sony's big game for the holidays so there's a possibility they will get it out, but I just want it done well.

I'd rather have them delay until next year to help perfect the game.

PS5 supply will just be as bad if not worse this holiday.

What's the problem? They're hard at work developing quality titles, so 2 years sounds perfectly fair to me, honestly.

Launch title huh? I guess my idea of launch title is a little different than most people. Sure I guess you can argue there is a "window", but I'd say the first month or two is what I would personally consider that window.

I don't think Guerilla has ever released a game without a major delay to 'polish things up' other than Shadow Fall, and look how that one turned out.

No one is claiming the first year is great for Xbox releases are they? Everyone knows it's pretty non existent.

And it's not "just competent" with the PS5 it's "almost" competent. And now most games are also coming to the PS4... Well that's just looking pretty bad for a console about exclusives.

Yes it's called normal reality.

Your reality is one in which just because the PS5 is selling well, it means it's having a great year with games. So far it's two games, don't blow your load.

The cows were the ones mad the PS4 is getting Horizon, GT7 and GoW. And now they aren't boasting about them as exclusives, only having the better versions.

And it's the cows celebrating £70 games. Not enduring it, celebrating.

That's your reality and it makes no sense to normal gamers.

My reality is, I get a load of games for £10.99 a month with other services, there are many devices to play Xbox games, 23M other gamers like this way of doing things and I'll have to wait until the end of the year for MS games to start rolling out.

This is exactly what I'd say if I were in his shoes. Games on schedule to release this year but you never know with covid what might happen. Seems like it'll release late this year based on the footage we just saw.
