I mean that Sony made a 80 GB PS3 sold at $300 WITHOUT the following:

- Printer support

-2 of the 4 USB hubs

-CD/DVD playing capabilities (also means no backwards compatibility with PS & PS2 games)

-Additional DOS (operating system) support

-Wi-Fi

-Web Browser

-SD card hub, Compact Flash hub

-Multimedia download support (downloadable games, demos & DLC would stay)

For those who ask about removing the Blu-Ray player, hard drive & bluetooth, those are needed for games, game files & wireless controllers, respectively.

I mean that Sony made a 80 GB PS3 sold at $300 WITHOUT the following:

- Printer support

-2 of the 4 USB hubs (40GB only has 2 usb ports)

-CD/DVD playing capabilities (also means no backwards compatibility with PS & PS2 games)

-Additional DOS (operating system) support

-Wi-Fi

-Web Browser

-SD card hub, Compact Flash hub (Again 40 GB doesn't have this)

-Multimedia download support (downloadable games, demos & DLC would stay)

For those who ask about removing the Blu-Ray player, hard drive & bluetooth, those are needed for games, game files & wireless controllers, respectively.

I would buy one without Wifi but prefer it with it. For the rest, why would they remove software features. It wouldn't help them cut production costs.

Without Wifi? Nah. But I can lose the rest of those features.

A month ago, I probably would have said no. Unfortunateley, I must admit that I now realize that the $399 would be as good as it gets for a while. Taking away too many things from this system would be too wierd imo. I could live without the printer connectivity, though...maybe...nah! LOL.

In terms of production costs, it will decrease without those software features. Consider this: there is time consumed when installing that software, also electricity. It wouldn't be much, but it's something.

About the 40 GB PS3 without some of the aforemetnioned features, remember that it's no longer in production, so it's a less valid point.

no it wouldn't because those software features would be built in to the ps3 operating system, it would take more time to have to different versions of it one with updates the features and one what doesn't

What an odd thread. It's like the PS3 is trying to be a half-assed PC. I thought it was all about the games, not about printer support. :|

The only thing that was useless was the printer option. The rest are great.

Do you want a gaming console or a cheap PC plugged to your TV?

Personally, I depend heavily on the DVD player and wifi. Everything else you've mentioned, I haven't touched once. I'd do an outcry for lack of PS2 compatibilities, but since the PS3's finally got some awesome games, I hardly play old games anymore...so it will be missed, but I won't die without it either. Just my opinion.

Seems too expensive given the lack of features.

I could live without the Wi-fi, Printer support and web browser. I doubt that will lower the cost by much though.

Some of them are software so it costs nothing to include, also the dvd playing function doesent caost anything extra on top of the blu-ray. And havnt they already taken out the media card prts?

The only thing that would save money is the wifi!
