I thought I'd share these videos I've seen. I've been watching this YouTube channel called The Great War which on the 100th anniversary of the start of the first World War has been making a week by week series of videos that chronicles the war as it unfolds. He's two years in already with another two to go. Anyhow, with the reveal of the Battlefield 1 game, he's slowed down the trailers to analyze and give his take on what we're seing. Just how accurate is what we're seeing? See for yourself...

It's interesting to see where it hits and misses. Obviously there's going to be some liberties taken with the historical source material as well as an over-the-top, hyperrealistic representation of things. In many areas though, it seems like EA did their homework in their design and depiction.

Lol accurate enough. Ya soldiers were totally running around with submachine guns and sights on everything, give me a break.

Hunting those bolt action/iron sight only servers.

Obviously the game would be boring if you were to use the exact weapons with no customization and stuff, let's not forget that it's an entertainment product at the end.

And by "accurate enough" , i mean the overall details, the soldiers , the vehicles and overall atmosphere of the game which all resemble the WW1 ....it's amazing to me.

Why do a WW1 shooter then? They should have just made it WWII. Either way I'm still greatly looking forward to the game. I just find some of the decisions to be a little silly.

See you on the battlefield ;) Provided you're on PC lol.

Because WW1 isn't explored in videogames, it's a unique setting imo (Them tanks ! them airplanes ! them outfits! and THEM zeppelins !) . We've had a lotta WW2 games.

:D Yeah i'm on the PC, i play on Germany servers as they have the best possible ping for me.

Eh, it's accurate enough. I think the multiplayer is going to be a bit more like a WWII feeling and style, while the single player will be accurate WWI. Because honestly, only bolt action and "single shot reload" weapons in a multiplayer game, would be pretty boring.

Not boring, lots of fun actually.

From what I've seen its more so a WWI themed battlefield game than it is an actual WWI game. Not that there is anything wrong with that. I only wish there were less machine guns.

Likewise. Everyone is going to be running around with fully automatic guns and sub machine guns. The game is sadly more a reskinning than I was hoping for.

They did their best. WWI is hard to do both fun and authentic at the same time. A more authentic WWI game would play like Red Orchestra 2, which isn't the kind of gameplay that Battlefield is targeting.

As a gun nut I'm actually quite excited to try out all of those pretty rare weapons that will be featured in the game. Very few remain in the real world so it's really nice to have a nice and authentic recreation of the weapon.

I'm pumped. Game looks like a ton of fun and a great change of scenery and pace from Battlefield 4. Love some of the core changes they made to the gameplay and I really like the "return to Battlefield 1942" vibe I'm getting.

Day one for me.

@Randoggy: Of course, that's your opinion, like I explained mine. Don't get me wrong, a 100% accurate WWI portrayal in a game would be an awesome experience, but for the single player campaign. Multiplayer is all about competition, well of course having fun, but also competition. Getting rid of fully or semi automatic weapons in multiplayer modes would be a bad idea.

I expect it to be arcadey with stretches here and there of the setting, like every other BF shooter. The BF games have never been accurate or realistic (nor have they claimed to be), the last game was about a US-China war or before that US-Iran... lol.

What would have really changed BF1 in tone is if all bodies would stay on the map during the match. You could have bodies piling up and use the bodies as cover, like they did in WW1, and shoot through piles of corpses by shooting long enough in one go at one spot with heavy machine gun fire. Imagine how much a map would change from the start to the end of a match with over 350 corpses sprawled about :P

But nobody does this because as of now it would be extremely resource intensive and a physics nightmare waiting to happen.

They don't need to do this, it's just something that popped up in my head. It would probably be a little gross and I think I prefer the tone they are going for right now. I think BF1 looks like a lot of fun. I like some of the changes on paper, such as the bayonet charge and the vehicle classes and the amount of smoke and dust generated by the player's actions.

Gameplay wise.... its just the same old fast pace shooter we seen in BF3 and BF4.

I wish the gameplay would have been different

Yeah and that is fine with me. I love seeing typical BF things happen in a somewhat realistic and serious setting. Things like this typical BF aircraft landing: youtube link. It cracks me up every time I see it.

I really don't care if the game is historically accurate or not. I only care if the game is fun or not. Battlefield has kind of sucked for a while now, so I hope this one will be good. It will probably be like BF3 & 4 though sadly.

Yup, saw this video yesterday, it was so interesting.

Didn't even know the Belgian army had an armored car division and were actually the first to use them :O

I am looking forward to playing the game. i dont care if its particularly realistic, i imagine that there would have been long periods of waiting and people around you suffering with trench foot or dying of disease. doesn't sound like fun to me.

maybe there will be a "make your own trench art" mini-game.

as long as its fun to play and the story missions fit historic events, it should be a good game.

I think people are already learning new stuff from seeing only the little Battlefield 1 footage we have.

Like for example that WW1 wasn't just bolt action rifles (though it was for a big part).

So the game doesn't even have to be 100% accurate to make people want to learn more about the time period, and that's great !

Well, if you ignore that it's set in the 20's and that no one will be lining up waiting for an officer to blow a whistle, sending you to your almost guaranteed maiming or death, while advancing (walking) in an orderly fashion, over open land, into machine gun fire. Then yeah, it's likely pretty accurate.

No trenches. Zac Efron, Jamie Wolf, and Snoop Dogg getting his blunt on. French are DLC. Good stuff.

At least Terry Crews was playing with mouse and keyboard.

God Bless Terry Crews.
