I recently started playing grid on my PC and noticed some minor choppiness in some races. In that 24 hour race it actually got quite bad when night came and I decided to check up the performance through fraps. I found out that my FPS would go as low as 32 in some places, even 40 FPS felt noticably choppy than 50+FPS especially when there are alot of cars right infront of you. I dropped the settings from ultra to low and I still got low 30's in some places, seems like my CPU is a heavy bottleneck here as both my cores get upto 100% use.

It got me a little curious on how the consoles run this game and gamespot's review says "solid 30 FPS". OMG so the game always runs in 30 FPS?:?

My PC is running most race types above 50FPS on full settings so I can bear with the occasional hiccup but a constant 30FPS? How can you enjoy such a fast racing game with 30FPS? More importantly how can you appreciate the stunning graphics with that price?

I am honestly not trying to sound like an elitist, I just found this game not very smooth in the mid 30's let alone rock bottom 30FPS.

So my question is how come all the PS3 and 360 owners talk so much about the best graphics and be ok with locked 30FPS?:?

I play games on both consoles and PC and 30 FPS is fine, as long as it doesnt go in the 20's. 60 FPS is really nice but not necessary and would be hard to pull off with nice graphics on consoles.

It really does make a huge diference in a racing game...

I would much rather have inferior graphics and 60FPS unless you play racing games to look at the car models.

What's wrong with games running at 30fps? I don't care what a games fps is anyway, just as long as it's stable and there are no issues with it dropping.

For me the differences in frame rates above 30 FPS is barely noticable, so I dont really care. Below 30 is where it gets too choppy for me

I have played PC and console games and I dont see any real world difference. Doesnt make a difference at all in one way or another. Unless the fps dip down real low its nothing. People like to dig at everything all the time instead of just playing and enjoying.

30 FPS is pretty stable among games. According to some people here in SW; any game that has above 30 FPS is not noticeable by eye :?

Well it depends on the type of game. If its just a standard action game, im fine with 30 fps. But if its a shooter or racer. Then I usually prefer 50+ fps.

Most don't know otherwise.

Other, like myself are just so used to it that it doesn't bother us.

I can't play Halo 3 anymore though, I played Halo 2 at a friend's house and it was so smooth, I went to play Halo 3 after and I noticed the difference easily, it just didn't feel good at all.

Forza 2,3, and PGR 4 run at 60 FPS Action games like DMC 4, Ninja Gaiden 2, God of War 3, and Bayonetta run at 60 FPS(NG 2 has framerate issues though). Fighters like SF 4 do 60 FPS. The genres that are so dependant on 60 frames are usually in 60 frames, it's every other genre that is locked at 30.

It's feeling choppy because it's constantly dropping and rising from 30-50 FPS. Just lock your framerate at 30 or 40 so there is no fluctuation and it should feel a lot smoother.

well probably because having a stable 30 the whole race > 50 with drops to 30. you don't really notice anything when its stable but when there's a huge drop like that of course it'll look bad.

It's all to do with perception. When I play counter-strike i have it locked at 100fps and it just feels normal, if I drop it to anything lower it feels bad and then when I go back to 100fps it feels super smooth... yet it just felt normal when I was used to it. Same with dropping from 75herz to 60herz, at first it feels horrible yet I played at 60herz for years and after playing 60herz for 20 mins it feels normal and you stop noticing how choppy it is.

Going from 60fps to 30fps = 30fps feels horrible

Playing at a constant 30fps you get used to it really fast, though if you were suddenly go to 60fps it would feel great and then back down to 30fps then 30fps would feel terrible.

I can't word exactly what I mean :P in a way 30fps is only bad once you've experience the same game at 60fps recently.

Because consoles are 'good enough' gaming machines for the mainstream, they are not meant to represent the pinical of what is available.

If console games want to be 60fps they have to be designed for it from the ground up.

That is not true at all.

There is an option turned on by default in the PC version of GTA3 which caps your FPS to 30. I didnt pay attention to it and started playing the game and it just didnt feel right at all. I couldnt think about a 7 year old game giving performance issues so I was confused as to why the game isnt feeling smooth. Later I saw that FPS limiter thing which had locked it to 30FPS lol.

Maybe I notice cuz I sit close to the screen I dont know...

I don't know about other games but Forza 3 runs at a stable 60fps. Halo 3 also runs very nicely.

When playing on a console I'm always more dismayed by the low resolution rather than the framerate. Of course I do mostly play RPG where framerate is considerably less important than FPS's and racing games.

The difference between 30 and 60 is simply the difference between motion and smooth motion, a subtle effect but something that is appreciated none the less. Especially when the game takes advantage of that frame rate with 60 fps animations.

I remember when console developers would actually lock dynamic animations based on what the game is running at, when the game was ported to PC it was always bizarre to see something running at half the frame rate the game was. Oblivion in particular was bad for that with their physics animation, I remember the Fable grass was locked at a lower frame rate as well.

60 fps is better than 30 fps, 1080p is better than 720p, 2048x2048 textures are better than 1024x1024 textures. Sometimes something isn't subjective, it is just better. They are not necessary to play and enjoy the experience, they just make the experience higher quality.

That is because your brain is noticing the slow down... 30FPS is great for an arcade racer as long as it doesn't go down (or up). It's better to have a locked 30 than a jumpy and inconsistant 50+

My PC can't run games very well. The only games it runs smoothly are MMORPG's and older games. The games I play on the 360 all have a decent number of FPS to make the game enjoyable.

It's not really surprising, depending on the rez he's pushing.

Thats probably cause your PC isn't very good. I get around 50-60 fps on almost every game I play at Very High/Max Settings 4xAA 16xAF Transparancy Supersampling and at full 1080p... And my pc is Mid/High range at best.:?

30 FPS is fine. 60 is better but its not like the quality of the game experience is so drastically undermined by the drop. If you are incapable of dealing with games at 30 FPS due to your high standards and incredible occular fitness then fair enough, but your missing out on many high quality console experiences...

I'm fine with 30 Frames per second. Heck, I'm even fine with the FPS N64 shooters run at, mainly with the age of the console.

I think 60 fps is irreal even for PC standarts. I'd rather have full AA and high resolution than 60 fps. Hell i play Crysis at 24 fps and would rather have all shaders on than play it on 30 fps.

If teaches anything, PC gaming teaches you to tolerate low fps. And yes having locked on 30 fps is much better than a highly fluctuating fps.

yeah thats what you would think but honestly when it says 30FPS I notice a lot of lag and choppiness on the PC but 30FPS is fine on the consoles. I dont notice anything, when I played Killzone 2 I didnt even know that it was 30FPS because it felt like 90FPS honestly. Only MAG has a tiny bit of choppiness in full matches because its 256 players in one match all playing on a huge map. It has NO lag just a tiny bit of choppiness and trust me I have experienced it with PC its just that you just dont see any of it on consoles. Everything runs perfectly no matter 60fps or 30fps it just does, I dont know how but it just does.

If Killzone 2 seemed like 90 fps to you then I highly doubt you've ever seen anything at 60 fps.

okay I exaggerated a little with 90fps but my main point was at 30fps you dont exactly see everything lagging and freezing up and see choppiness throughout the whole game. If that were true then who would waste the money? Killzone 2 plays perfectly fine at 30fps, not much complaints have been made from people who are mad because of its 30fps. Its fine the way it is.

Because the difference between 30 and 60 fps in my experience is completely unnoticable.

1. only fps and racers need to be 60 fps or higher.
2.most all other games work great at 30.
3.and we live with it much like pc gamers did years ago when they'd never heard of 60 fps.
