Good point... Suprised noone else has commented on this. I'll do some educated guesses;
1. Bigger file sizes mean you have to buy bigger storage devices.
2. They probably have encoding up the ying-yang trying to prevent copying or altering.
3. The music. It's probably digital, as opposed to analog which a lot of 8 bit games were.
4. Not sure about the PS3, but on 360 there are achievements, and I'm sure those need to be coded into the game code.
5. Is there controller feedback (vibration) in the game?
Can't think of anymore. Nice topic.

8bit games sound was only anolog if the game came the audio on a seperate cassette.
Isn't the wii one much smaller though :?samusarmada
I don't understand where all the megs come from either. Streets of Rage 2 on Xbox Live arcade is 28Mb, it has had no HD makeover its just the original MegaDrive game emulated on the 360, with a few achievments. The original game was only 2Mb in size! Surley the achievments don't take up 26Mb?
And why is PAC-MAN 15Mb? The original Arcade cabinet that dates back to 1980 only had 16k onboard memory!
n64 games were capped at 64mb
thats strange though
the original megaman was only one megabit in size, its unbelievable really
oh wait a sec, its most likely because its high res. i think right?
does it run in 720p? cause if it does thats why
It's for all the locked extra content you have to pay for.DireToad
you download the extra content which takes up more space

So it's not like Soul Calibur where the DLC is already on the disc?even if it was its not going to take up that much space

pacman i could understand, the achievements leaderboards the arcade frame around the game and a few other things but mega man is 100mb
Megaman 9 is actually rendered in full 1080p 3D using the RE5 engine. It uses a variety of cell shaded techniques and blur filters to make it appear to be made of 8-bit 2D sprites, and these things take up space.mbrockway
so its not realy an 8 bit game
I think you're going to find that all XBLA games are bigger than the versions on other consoles to accomodate all the features typically offered on XBLA games. Of course, that's stating the obvious.RenegadeSynapse
yeah but megaman on the orginal nintendo was 1 MB and megaman 9 on xbla is 100mb
