How devastating will it be if Sony finishes third in the December NPD?

Two NPD tracking periods in a row. The biggest of the year.

Word at the installbase forums is that the well ran dry and Sony can't produce enough PS5's to finish anything but third place this generation, at least until the chip shortages are over which are estimated to be as far back as 2026.

Apparently the Xbox Series S is much easier to produce and MS really lucked out because it wasn't even planned for Covid shortages, as that was pre pandemic.

It won't do or mean much at all. PlayStation had been beating Xbox in NPD for like 11 straight months and, I don't think it'll last very long at all.

Fwiw, I'm not convinced Xbox can actually produce more consoles.

If the Series S was easier to produce, why had it been selling less than the PS5 since launch? (and still does worldwide)

My opinion is that Microsoft held back more stock for the holiday season since they had Forza and, Halo to launch while PlayStation couldn't do the same since they had to push more consoles throughout the year for games like Ratchet, Deathloop etc. They also need more consoles for Horizon and, GT7

It's fairly irrelevant if you're not an actual member though because you can't read the posts. Approval takes a while. Only the best are recruited. All the industry insiders and devs post there now and moved on from the freakshow forums like Neogaf and Resetera.

Shouldn't have to be devastating when one of the big three has to land there. Look at the bright side: usually the third place company for a gen bounces back with something better after the lessons they've had.

No prob. It's not nearly as big as Resetera, but that's because they're so selective.

It's by far the best gaming community if you want access to insider info on hardware and sales. All the insiders and devs are there as I mentioned and left the other communities.

You can expect it to happen many more times this generation.

Meh... this is probably the first generation where I'm on the "I can easily wait" mood. Nothing on the PS5 (or any other console for the matter) makes me think "I must have one right now". I still have a huge backloggery to play across PC, PS3, PS4 and Switch. Have plenty to play until I can find and aford a PS5. By then, the games I want to play will be cheap and so will the console. I dont have the urges to play the most recent games on the block. I can easily wait

I would first have to have an oddly blind dedication to a corporate conglomerate that tries to monetize everything from profile pictures to 20 year old games to even remotely feel devastated by said company's sales. I wouldn't be surprised if the PS5 wins December. As a person that was tasked to buy consoles for folks for Christmas, I can tell you there were TONS of PS5 drops across all retailers. And they all sold out. But the number of PS5 drops vs Xbox Series drops was incredibly in PlayStations favor. There were more PS5 drops this morning... The PS5 stock is obviously more plentiful than the Xbox stock.
