Last Generation we had:
Grand Theft Auto V (2013)
This Generation:
GTA V is making them a fortune. They have been riding on its coat tails for the last few years while taking the time to make RDR2 what their vision is.
GTA 5 is making more money than all of the games of the last gen combined. It's insane. They will probably launch GTA 6 at the very end of the generation, 2020. LOL.
Well LA noire and Max Payne 3 failed unfortunately while GTA V is becoming more and more successful.(Unfortunately it's online mode has become more successful than it's main game)
The same can be said for most first party studios. Naughty Dog made 3 Uncharted games for PS3, 1 for Vita and TLOU last Gen. so far we have UC4 and TLOU 2 yet to come. There were 4 Gears games, 4 Halo games on 360 and we only have 1 of each of those. We are closing in on 5 years this generation. The shift from first party to third party is very obvious.

ND didn't make the Vita game. Sony Bend did.
But i guess every dev has gotten slow this gen.
GTA 5 has been milked far too long.
There's obviously a whole bunch of gamers who don't mind. ;)
Honestly, im not even that hungry for another GTA. I remember feeling "been there done this" even when GTAV came out, after playing RDR/GTA4/BoGT/LatD and Saints Row 3 before it.
Personally im not interested unless they do something new (or rather fresher) like going back to London.
I know they're going to do some fuckshit like revisit Liberty City or Vice City again for the umpteenth time. Boring, not interested. Played that game already. More interested in RDR, or another LA Noire. Or Agent. A period based scenario.
Saints Row 3 even had features that GTAV didnt even have, like human shields, etc.... And it still has the same shitty police AI that magically knows where you are and spawns around corners from you. Its not intuitive at all. You never feel like you can "beat" the AI or that theres logic that you can outsmart based on rules, like in a Metal Gear game, or even Red Dead Redemption 1(dont quote me, its been like 7 years since I played that game). They just endlessly respawn near you.

Ugh please don't go back to Vice City or Liberty City. It won't happen but would love for GTA VI to really shake things up setting wise.
Same thing happens to EA and Activision Blizzard.
I wanted to put it in words but @Ant_17 already explained it perfectly. Everything Take Two has talked about and been busy with is chatting up loot boxes, games as a service, microtransactions, introducing poor gameplay decisions for cash, banning mods. That's their new job. Like EA and Activision Blizzard they're no longer a video game publisher first. They make more money on other things now.
And with RDR2 they will not say a word about the MTX system, monetization schemes outside of the retail price. After GTA V started selling they couldn't shut up about it. Which is understandable. They don't want to talk about it upfront. They first want to make you all excited with everything that it's not. But I don't believe for a second that they're not going to try and get away with things we would never let another game get away with. As I've said a couple times before I would be very careful with getting hyped for RDR2. I'm not sure they're part of the game industry anymore.
GTA V's online mode is making them tons of money, even though the game still sells they have said that at times the microtransactions have made them more than the actual game sales have so that's pretty substantial.
Because they discovered microtransactions and found out what VALVe loves so much. It's so much easier than making games.
@cainetao11:
"Easy. They are making revenue from the 80 million selling GTA5's online because Spencer was wrong."
At least you admit it! ?
@Randoggy:
Vice City would be cool imo. They could add in swamps/ the everglades.
Def agree on Liberty City though. NYC we've already seen it twice in the series and in a bunch of other games as well.
On topic - obviously they're too busy counting the money from GTA5 to make new games. RDR2 will probably be the same way.
I just wish they'd bring Midnight Club back. Even if it would be riddled with MT.
Rockstar is one of those few major devs, where I really dont understand the hate. When Watchdogs was first shown everyone was hyping ubisoft(a dev that def deserves criticism) for making a GTA killer. Then it came out and was no where near as fun or daunting as GTA 5. Rockstar raises the bar and kind of have their own lane.
It seems like with some companies *ahem*VALVE*ahem* having more money makes them more averse to taking risks.
Rockstar consists of several studios; New York, New England, San Diego, Toronto, as well as their UK branches in London, Leeds, and Lincoln. So it's not like just one dev team was working on so many titles at once. Now why we aren't seeing similar utilization of all these studio resources currently I'm not as sure of. Maybe it does have to do with the goldmine of "gaming as a service" from GTA Online that's made them rest on their laurels?
I really wish GTAV didn't have multiplayer by now we would of had GTA V SP DLC and at least a couple of new games by them now. I couldn't care about Rockstar online games I don't even have PSN so I'll just be playing R2R singleplayer no fucks given about online.
They were young and energetic, and full of ideas.
Now theyre all old, tired, fat middle aged blokes who have no new ideas, and who only keep making games to make some money.
They already working on GTA6 and thats almost certain at this point. Game will have humongous impact because will be for PS5/X2 and will feel like a true next-gen title.
I can live with that to be honest. AT the time being, they milking GTA5 hard, a game that its still selling like crazy
They probably lost money making all those games.
GTA Online prints money. Why spend on developing new games when you can just take in profits?

Lost Money?...How long have you been in gaming?
One game does great, another does shit. It's possible. TakeTwo's stock didn't rise until GTA Online came on the scene. From 22 bucks a share to over a hundred. That tells you a lot about their earnings last gen vs now.
@unrealgunner: GTAV online makes them hundreds of millions a year so they can afford to chill. This just means rdr2 is going to be epic
Talking of rockstar I would love a new Max Payne game thought 3 was excellent and definitely deserved a sequel.

I would honestly feel a lot better about the prospects of RDR2 being epic if Rockstar didn't have such a cash cow with GTA5. It probably just means that RDR2 is going to have a big focus on its multiplayer with a lot of microtransactions thrown in.
