I'm someone who didn't hear about half life until the orange box came out so I didn't play it when it came out. I did read somewhere that half life 2 was just suprisingly revealed at some E3 and released the same year. Well after playing portal 2 i really want to get my hands on half life 3, what are the odds we see something at E3?

Pretty sure at E3 If I recall, and following at was one of the biggest launch sagas in gaming. Man that was all messy, it's a large reason why Valve doesn't do long haul development nowadays.

It was announced before E3, but it was unveiled at E3 2003. God, I remember that day. The demonstration was mindblowing.

LOL, for some reason I thought we were talking about half-life 3. :( I wonder when valve is going to come up with a new engine.

It was supposed to be released the same year, they ran into a ton of issues and it was delayed for over a year.

I just remember it being announced via the standard channels. Magazines, gaming sites, etc. Early previews with work in progress screenshots, concept art etc.

I remember there being a big feature in PC Zone, with a number of screenshots of the plaza in the first chapter, complete with the white-masked CPs and the citizens in their blue overalls looking miserable. This was mid 2002ish, I think.

First gameplay footage we saw was from E3 2003: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_HOdeTPozU

Don't know if it was E3 2003 but it was 2003 for sure. Because since then we knew 2004 was going to be the year of the big 2 which ended being the year of the big 3 (Half Life 2, Doom 3 and Farcry)

I read the link you posted about the development of Half-Life 2. It was very insightful plus:

http://www.gamespot.com/features/6112889/p-12.html

this page shows a drawing bord that says "g-man = father". I think Valve has no clue who G-man is.

I just finished going over it as well. Very well written and informative. Still don`t like Geoff Keighley though.

I remember the leaked beta of HL2. Good times lol. I then preordered it on steam so I could play CS Source up till its release.

How come? I only ask because I don't know much about who he is or what he has done.

I compare knowing where you were or what you were doing when Kennedy was shot to knowing how big your eyes got when you heard about Half Life 2 being developed.

My eyes were wide.

er... but on topic. I remember hearing about it when playing TFC. Before steam was the main way to play it. Being ganked in Casbah by some douche while people were screaming "THEY JUST ANNOUNCED HALF LIFE 2!!!!!"

Those were the days! Half-Life 2 E3 2003 presentation was the best one in E3 history.

I first heard of it when Gabe came over to my house to ask for my input for the title of the game. I suggested "Half Life 2: The Return of Gordon Freeman", but he decided to go for a simpler title. True Story :).
