Sad to see what people would do over a game.
That said I find all of this hatred highly entertaining.
+1 for having a Jack Nicholson joker avatar. We see way to much of Heath ledger joker these days.
I think people over reacted just a tad too much to what she said.
Really stupid. Just more proof that parts of the gaming community is filled with nothing but a bunch of misogynistic nerds.
I don't presume to tell anybody how to play, or in this case I guess, watch a game. I personally don't care for the idea but who am I to tell other people they have to think like I do?
As far as gamers bashing her or any other developer, I say it's a free-for-all when it comes to bashing or praising products and their makers/users in the free market.
Pathetic.
Disgusting.
Hilarious. (In a bad way)
Who the hell cares what some employee says? All that matters is the games. If some fast forward button really was made for combat... just don't use it? Problem solved.
I don't like the direction Bioware has been going, especially in writing, but it is completely ridiculous what people are subjecting the chick to. Who cares if the chick said some unprofessional things? The comments were even more unprofessional.
You can take the story out of the game but you can't take the game out of the story, then it wouldn't be a game.tomarlynIt is still a interactive piece of entertainment people enjoy though, ala Dear Esther.
I actually don't mind the suggestion of the option of the skip-action-button if it remains... an option. I don't know how much of DA2 is accredited to Hepler, but the writing really took a nosedive when you compare it to ME1 or even DA:O. But this is besides the point.
I hate the mob mentality. The attacks are completely unwarranted (since the interview was from like 5 years ago, ffs) and you know people are just joining in because they can. But just watching what's going down, I'm cringing at how Hepler is handling it herself. Yes she has a right to defend herself, BUT it doesn't mean she should. The smartest thing to do is keep her mouth shut and let it all blow over because unfortunately the internet is all about one-upsmanship.
There was an incident over at Rooster Teeth not even a month ago, where military vets all over the site (and on another site too) thought they were being disrespected by the community manager and took things a little too far. The guys on the podcast caught wind and made some comments without knowing anything about the "issue" and it kind of blew up in their faces. Ironically it was on that podcast that they talked about celebrities hiding and not leaving the house after a scandal/national incident and everything will be forgotten after six months.

Yeah >_>. She just needs to lay low for a while and refrain from firing off tweets. There are some people who can gather a following from witty things they say in a situation such as this... she isn't one of them.
She gets some undeserved hate, and the stuff she says that does deserve criticism gets entirely way too much. It's sick the things people have been saying. Unfortunately, that's the nature of the internet. Anonymity allows people to say/do things they wouldn't dare in person. She may be throwing insults back, but she's doing it with her real name attached. All the anonymous haters are just cowards.
And let's be honest, good writing or bad writing, Dragon Age II would have sucked.
I don't mind what she said, I just find it strange BioWare hire people who don't enjoy video games. I know writing a story has little to do with game development, but I still find it strange and I would have thought it would be on the job spec, but apparently not.SaltyMeatballs
I found this strange as well, someone with no passion of video games cannot convey the emotion and story they want through them.
You don't see gamers bashing books beacause they're all dialogue and no action. If you like reading dialog and skipping action scenes, then pick up a book instead of game.
It's simple, really.
i still havent looked into it to get the full quote on hepler's point, but laura parker phrased it in such a way to insinuate that there is a disconnect between story and gameplay. i couldnt even say i agree or disagree with hepler on skipping sections with that barrier in the way.
however, hepler was obviously treated wrongly. whether you disagree with her point on video games or how she justifies backlash, she didnt deserve the slurs and all that.
Thanks guys. I see a lot of the users I enjoy reading posts from here. I agree with many here, she reacted childish as well. I guess it bugs me because as a movie buff, I dont see film fans get so childish as often as I do gamers. And I dont believe her idea was stripping what makes a game a game. If you wan to fight, dont press that button. I dated a girl who loved the cutscenes and story in Uncharted 2. She couldn't be bothered with shooting people though. For her, that idea would have been perfect as she loved the exploration, puzzles, and platforming. And whats wrong with that?cainetao11i would have loved to just do platforming and puzzles in UC3 and just skip shooting. as long as something like that is an option i dont see what the big deal is
So if someone loves say God of war's story, they should just get over it if they dont want to mash sq, sq, tri for hours? Why should they be shunned out? This is the thing that bothers me about us sometimes. We're so afraid of our beloved hobby changing when guess what? It will. Change is inevitable in life. And giving a button press option that doesnt have to be pressed all the outrage and hate is so stupid. I would never use the option, so how does it being in a game effect me?You don't see gamers bashing books beacause they're all dialogue and no action. Easy Mode is the action-skip button. Easy Mode in most games have 1-2 hit kills. You can steamroll your enemies with no trouble and progress the story .

Far from it. I've worked (in the game industry) with Artists, Programmers, Network Engineers and Producers who were all really good, really passionate and really professional when it came to making a really good game. They just didn't enjoy gaming themselves. I've never met a game designer who didn't like gaming, but I have met designers who didn't like the type of game or genre they were working on.

Difficulty isnt the question for some people. It's like my ex with Uncharted 2, she didnt want to shoot anyone. Ok maybe games with their storytelling, and movie like presentation isnt for anyone but gamers. But gamers were complaining games that are cinematic are too linear when Uncharted 3 hit. So what should we have, play combat then no cut scenes, maybe text to tell the story and then more combat? Because afterall if you want to play a game, play one, but if you want to watch a movie, then put one in. You cant have both, son.Anything that ugly needs to be bashed. millerlight89With your avatar, that made me crack up!!! It looks like he's saying it while removing his shades so you know he means it.
I don't really care.
She should have just laughed at and ignored them, or if she had to respond she should've been modest about it. She totally deserved what came after the v and job in the industry comment.
The "gamer entitlement" bullcrap that most writers went on about is an even worse argument than what biodrones said to her.
Anything that ugly needs to be bashed. millerlight89And you win the award for Dumbest Post of the Day.
Just make a visual novel based on game, then release the full game with the VN included. Problems solved.

It just proves that people, when they have something to hide behind can be real asshats. Also, people wouldn't be nearly as mad if she looked like Jade Raymond or some other supposedly hot female..
heretrix
Her looks give her another point for the mob to hate on, but even if she was hot, they would have dropped all of the fat jokes and called her a female dog instead.
I would agree with her more if games nowadays actually had compelling stories. Most games' stories do nothing more but give you just enough reason to barge into the next shooting gallery and kill everyone in there.
BPoole96
Forgot to mention this point aswell.
If games today had stories that were on par with Black Isle's or early BioWare works that idea wouldn't sound as ridiculous.
But... that's not the case.

I do feel attacking someone can reach a harsh level that's not needed, but in my OP I thought it was more than clear the thing I touched on was gamers fear of choice and change in gaming more than anything. And I never said I didnt have a sense of humor about it. That post with the combonation of avatar struck me funny, that is all. With your avatar it wouldnt have been so.
