I certainly look back at games like Quake 3, Goldeneye, Halo, Perfect Dark, Halo 2 and the like in a very high regard. I know that the CoD series has a major online multi-player draw, and when the user base dies down, that could be detrimental to the way the games are percieved, but I think that the single player campaigns are solid enough in their own right to solidify their place in gaming history. I like to collect games, so I am definitely going to hang onto all the Call of Duty games. How do you think this generation of CoD games will be viewed in 10 years from now? Will any of them be worth owning, even for nostalgia purposes alone?

Fun games that sold a lot and people enjoyed.

I know I'm just going to look at it as the series I ignored because it wasn't fun to me but that's just one opinion.

The thing you said about the MP is what I've been saying for a while. Also, I'm thinking that MW will be viewed as great (I will admit the campaign was awesome) and maybe WaW as good, but they will probably be seen as dumb.

I doubt they'll even be thought of. People basically stop talking about a Call of Duty game when the next one or two come out(with the exception of 4)

Probably be the starting point for the death of gaming. From a historical perspective. "It was thefall of 05 when COD4MW came out. If only they knew the horrors that awaited them with COD MW 423. 80 dollars for a three hour SP and 4 map MP. Two weeks later the rest of the game would be sold as DLC for 49.99."

The same way they are viewed now, like piles of trash that are successful because they market to people who don't know any better.

No offense but when I look at games that game out 10 years ago, number of GOTY and AAA scores is not what I look at and really it isn't what most people look at.

This... I know someone who have a PS3 and all he plays on it is COD. He dont have any other games beside COD. When i showed him other games he asked me "is it COD?" Well you got the point, and yes, its a ture story. I know other guy who do the same, but on PC.

Market saturation is getting to a critical point at the moment with all the constant sequels and rehashes.

Luckily indie games are helping to stave off an inevitable meltdown in the US and Europe.

I give gaming another gen before someone like Miyamoto has to come along and re-invent the whole gaming process.

Preferably with interactive virtual worlds ala the Holodeck.

Nostalgic Person: "Ah yes, I remember CoD. My friends and I would play that game a lot back in the day. Oh, how I miss my childhood."
I'm just playing around. This is not a threat.
Seriously though, I believe it's just going to be a game series people remember playing often.

They will be forgotten just like most FIFA and NHL games. Its stuff that is fun to play for many people, but its basically just another shooter that prints money on year to year basis, nothing memorable. Metal Gear Solid 4, Uncharted 2, Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime, Mass Effect 1, The Witcher, etc. - those are the games that will be remembered as classics, because unlike CoD they are unique, hold their own story and had enormous amount of work and dedication invested into them.

I dunno about everyone else, but I'll always see it as the series who successfully rehashed the series by releasing (soon to be) 7 CoD games in one generation (in 6 years!).

Seriously though, CoD 2, 3, WaW, BO, MW, MW2, MW3. Beginning at the end of 2005 ending a the end of 2011.

Don't you people think this is a little excessive?

To the 'casual' gamer, Call of Duty will probably be forgotten in 10 years time. To the more 'serious' gamer who looks back, Call of Duty will be remembered as a game which sold incredibly well and became very generic.

It will be remembered that they sold really well and were popular for a stretch, then crashed and burned (if things go like that, which I'm sure they will). I think the intense hatred for them will mellow out in time, once they stop being the bro games of choice.

But the people who didn't like them will remember them that way, and the people who liked them will remember them fondly. Just like with any game.

Such an Ignorant Comment. I see the qualities in CoD and because of that I enjoy it very much. I buy them cause I know better, I know what to expect when I purchase them.

The reason the game sells so well is because they market to an ignorant crowd. The reason everyone else buys it is because all their friends bought it, and games are more fun with friends. The games themselves don't do anything better than any other game, other than being popular.

This.

Massive commercial successes. Popularising MMO centric systems into multiplayer for this era of games. Derivative, predictable but solid gameplay.

Will any of them be worth owning, even for nostalgia purposes alone?

Ignorant how? What are they ignorant of? Other games? That's the point of all marketing, to draw attention to your product and divert it from others. You know how they really market Call of Duty? They put out advertisements that appeal to the massive audience that played and liked other Call of Duty games, which ensures profit from the get-go. Keyword in that sentence: "LIKED" Not everyone is a tool and buys things because others do, as you suggest, but maybe because they enjoy it.

It would be another trend looked back upon with warm hearts for those who loved this generation of games if Activision was to actually quit making them. In all honesty, I look back on the first two with a very warm heart. Everything after, not so much.

Halo was a big trend for the first three games and the Xbox, but after CoD4 came out, FPS developers moved on either trying to go after CoD, or something altogether different. CoD really is the series that made this next gen what it is, even though it took two years post-360 launch to make that happen. When someone asks me, "what do you think of the 3rd 3D System Generation?", the first thing I will think of is FPSs, and CoD will be the first one I think of. Halo had it's limelight, now CoD has it.

I will also argue that while CoD is the series of this generation, it's not like Halo where the Xbox was about and only Halo throughout the generation. CoD just happens to be the most successful of many awesome, hit FPS/shooters on this generation of systems. There is very good competition for "best shooter" among many games and series including, Gears of War, Uncharted, Halo, Crysis, Killzone, Battlefield: Bad Company, Bioshock, Left 4 Dead, Resistance, etc.

This is a generation where it's very difficult to play favorites.

Hopefully it will be forgotten. I actually don't mind the COD series, however until it dies every first person shooter taking place in modern times will be called a Call of Duty clone in some way, this is of course excluding games like Battlefield. It is going to be interesting to see how Battlefield 3 will do sales wise.
