i know it didnt sell as much as the ds, but when i had my psp it was my most played console, over my 360 ps3 and wii. i played it everywhere i went and it had some awesome titles. i think people are too hard on it. 70 million sales is ALOT and a success in my book.

It hasnt sold 70 million, at last count, it stood at 62 million. However, with that said, it still stands as one of the highest selling systems of all time. It is not a failure in absolutes, but relative to the DS, its competitor, in bith, the sales, and the quality and quantity of the games it received, as well as relative to what it was expected to do, the PSP failed.

pre-release hype, promise and destruction of a company is what makes people say its a failure.

Sales and games wise its not.

yeah i would say if it didn't live up to its expectations its because of the not so great library. i wouldn't call it a failure though. its okay for a handheld.

Because the PS3 is a failure because PS2 outsold it. And 360 is a success because it outsold the xbox. The psp is a success because it is PlayStations first handheld. ... wait you said it's not, because people say it isn't a success because the DS outsold it? Whoa Whoa Whoa! People can't cross platform compare! If so then The 360 is a failure because it didn't outsell the PS2, Wii is a failure because it didn't outsell the PS2, every other console is a failure because it didn't outsell the PS2. Look at how people miss use information. tsk tsk tsk.

I don't know why people bash the PSP library. I understand it's sales are behind, but the library looks good from someone that takes look from afar at both systems. It looks to me like PSP has more "quality" games than DS. I don't know about quantity. Both have some console ports (PSP from PS1 and PS2, DS likes to do N64 games).

I've "almost" bought myself a PSP a number of times. But in the end I just can't bring myself to get a portable. Maybe 3DS or PSP2 will get me to finally do it. The only portable I ever had was the original game boy.

No, the PSP is not a failier compared to nintendos handhelds, segas handhelds were... even though the sega nomad and gamegear were good consoles they could not compeat. They flopped massivly compared to the gameboy but PSP put up a decent fight.

It's not a failure. With numbers like that you didn't fail. It seems the market had room for a second handheld.

It didn't "beat" the Nintendo handheld. Only Nintendo fanboys say the PSP "failed" because they realized the Sony handheld actually took a chunk of market share from Nintendo.

Its really not though... The difference between the 3DS's console ports and the PSP's consoles ports, is that the 3DS's will be IMPROVEMENTS of the originals with added features, better graphics and in 3D etc. Where as the psp had downgraded ports of mostly shooters that controled terribly because of only one analog stick and much uglier graphics. Big difference

When Sony was releasing the PSP, they said it would beat DS and be called the new king of the handheld market. But they were wrong so it failed to overtake the DS. It not a failure by sale wise though

I'm sure the 3DS will have its fair share of console ports (Unfortunately) But looking at all the other games that devs are working on, it seems that it will have yet another fantastic library even if you exclude all the ports.

It failed to live up to the hype people gave it, put Sony in the red even with the abundant piracy just as much as Nintendo, and it ditched its own priority format for movies and stuff. In that regards its a failure without competing with the DS.

It is a success compared to the other companies that lost to Nintendo. :)

I didn't really notice many console ports. And as for JRPG's, DS is guilty of that as well (Dragon Quest, 358/2 Days, The World Ends With You, Crystal Chronicles, revamps of old Final Fantasies, etc.)

console ports... in 3D! Besides all of the DS' and the PSPS strongest games are not ports, it's just that the PSP has more and it didn't do alot of them justice.

Ports and remakes are different. Many PSP ports were downgrades of current gen consoles games.

It might help if you actually look at the 'ports' the PSP received. They usually receive new content and touched up graphics, among other additions. Saying they're all shooters just shows you know little of the PSP's library.

saying mostly =/= all. A large portion of them were shooters. And for every one ps2 to psp port that was actually in any way better there was like 5 that were huge downgrades

Simple flash back in the game cube era. Sony the invincible monstrocity, having entirely dethroned ninty twice in console market, announced a handheld. One bosting the playstation brand and high specs. In the time period it was considered to do what the playsation did to the N64 and gamecube, which is dominate. During the time Nintendo was scrambling for a device to counter the PSP, and they produced the DS a device that was entirely experimental, hence the DS moniker. This was fall back in case it failed they could save face and release the real "gameboy". things did not turn out that way. DS be came a monumental success and teh PSP languished to pretty bad levels in its early years. hence it failed to be what people thought it would be, the final nail for nintendo's coffin. DS has hit record levels in the handheld sales. PSP is currently doing better and has survived and produced money so only through hype was it failure as a product it was merely okay. Though the PSPGO was so much fail

I don't think it's a failure but it did not live up to the hype, at least in the West. In Japan it's arguably one of the best systems out this gen. However, while the PSP did take some marketshare from Nintendo, Nintendo sells even more then they have before.

I edited before you posted so ha! But seriously, what 'large portion' are you referring to? The PSP didn't have too many shooters period, let alone ports.

Well Ghost Recon, Tom Clancy rainbow 6 vegas, medal of honour, Starwars Battlefront, and a few others around the early launch window. I know later it got some better ports like P3P and so on but because it got so many downgraded ports so early it kind of got that stigma so even when there were some good ports I didnt really even bother checking them out because I just assumed they would be worse

When you have a two horse race, you end up with one winner and one loser. Did the PSP do better then any other nonNintendo portable? Yes, but the DS still won the race pretty handily.

Honestly, the PSP library is what lost the race for Sony. Sure there are great games out there (I own a lot of them), but how many months did we look at release schedules with no PSP titles of note.

Most of psp's games aren't ports either, and you cant just pick and choose games to support your argument. The 3DS is pretty much doing what the psp did which is put games from consoles it cant handle like ps3 and the 360, how psp put games from ps2.

How many games did it sell? I'd be willing to put money on a huge chunk of those 70 million units being used to play pirated games and roms, especially with so many NDP releases where the PSP sold decently but no PSP title cracking the top 10 (or even 20, most of the time).

True. However, it is an opinion shared by most people, although I recognize there's quite the sizeable minority that preferred the PSP's library.

I sold my DS for a PSP and never regretted it once. OT: PSP gets too much hate, although its a dying platform, it had a good run.
