I didn't play Battlefield 2, but it seems Frostbite 2 will start to be used in a lot of different games (I guess Need for Speed already used it, right?). I mean, Generals 2 will use it and there are rumors DA3 (or parts of it) will use it as well.
.
So, how good is it? it seems great in the videos I saw from BF3... but can it be the unreal engine for the next generation?

Well EA is only allowing it to be used in their titles, so i doubt that it will become the UE of the next gen. And we really have no idea how easily it can be adopted and used by various devs, or if DICE is even willing to give large scale support for various developers

If the are, they won't be game developers for a while.

As for how good it is visually, there's no doubt as to its prowess. It won't however, become the next Unreal Engine for two reasons: Firstly, EA will never license it as someone above this post mentioned; secondly, there's this situation right here. If Frostbite 2 is as hard to develop for (Also cited by DICE as to why there won't be any mod support for Battlefield 3) as it seems to be the case, then it can never replace UE3.

The reason so many devs support Unreal Engine is because of its accessiblity and ease of use. That being said, I'm sure some devs would like to get their hands on it.

I don't think anyone here is really in position to discuss it unless he or she actually had or has direct experience with (and/or knowledge of) the engine. That said, as with every engine it's more a matter how talented the devs are than how advanced the engine is. Good devs will make miracles with an average engine while bad devs will make a poor job even with the best tech possible.

I agree. I know this is somewhat unrelated but look at what Capcom (MHTri) and Nintendo themselves have done on middling hardware like the Wii. It further validates the point that more than the engine, its the prowess of the development team that matters most. [Sorry for the useless rant]

This. Although it does look pretty nice at times it feels as if somethings missing. I can't quite put my finger on it but something just makes it look horrible.

Looks good on consoles, looks great on PC, and flexible enough to take on multiple genres. What's not to love?

I only played BF3 at my friends house on his 360. But I was impressed even with the console version. So needless to say it looks unbelievably tasty on PC! xD

Is that even logic? There's no such thing as "The engine looks horrible".

It's going to be used by EA as an Internal Development Engine. It will save up a lot of money in the long run because the EA developers will only need to use one engine (instead of building their own or licensing from someone else). In addition, it is much easier for developers to alter the engine a bit if its only one engine, and that one engine can be updated much quicker (because its only one engine). For example, lets say some Bioware dev alters the engine a bit and finds a good way to do something, that information can then be updated into the full engine if its good enough.

How good is it? At what?
I don't know.

Ask repi. DICE has worked with an older 07-08 version of UE3, so they can contrast against that, for whatever good that'd do.
