This thead has nothing to do with System Wars (oh the irony :P ) but I'm just wondering - what's the average gaming PC today?

If you can back up your speculation with evidence, all the better.

Wrong. The average PC may or may not be on par with consoles. However, it's not hard to guess that the average gaming PC is less than 5 years old, and thus better than any console.

According to Steam's statistics page, the most common setup is a dual-core with a 9800GT, which is a decent jump from consoles. http://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey

I think he wants information from non PC gamers as well. This thread will be good because hermits always post budget PC rigs and say "Just keep your case, keyboard, etc." and I think they greatly underestimate how outdated some of our PCs are. My old PC didn't even have a PCI-E slot.

I doubt that. Steam surveys are hardly trustworthy. Only people who even do them are hardcore types.

So much wrong in this post.

At least 1 and 1/2 as powerful as the current gen consoles.

Console gamers always think only super-duper high end PC can ape them, when in reality, even the average college kids laptops nowadays mostly more powerful than teh cell and are sold at reasonable prices.

Impossible to say, as it's rather different to quantify what is and isn't a gaming PC.

It can't be that narrow of a sampling. I'm not a PC gamer, but my machine is in the survey.

If you consider an average gaming PC to cost anywhere between $600 ~ $900 then I'd say they're pretty good.

Talking about a gaming PC, then probably more powerful than the 360/PS3. I'm still rocking a e8400/4870 after 3 years.

Apparently the hardcore types have 9800 GT's & dual-cores and only 5.6% of hardcores have DX11...

4Gb RAM

2.3-2.69 Ghz dual core intel CPU

Gaming at 1080p with a 9800/GPU with 1gb Vram.

Thats jsut for people on steam who are gamers, it would be interesting and funny to see the specs of most mainstream PC users like Joe the derp plumber or Derpina mcpoopy pants that buys milk at walmart, or gloria the white soccer mom farmville pro.

If you want to see the average gaming PC, look at the Steam hardware survey.

If you ask here, you are just going to get console fanboys trying to spin office computers as being part of the "Gaming PC" install base.

That is incorrect...Steam's data is outdated, esp. the graphics DX part. It says May 2009 - May 2010. That 5.6% hasn't changed for a LONG TIME!
