Is it just me or are titles "exclusive" to a platform rarely must-have?

Don't get me wrong, some exclusives are fun to play but pound for pound on average I don't know anybody who would rather play UC over GTA, or Fable over Fallout.

I think people use exclusives to justify their purchase and stave off buyers remorse, but deep down inside they'd rather be playing Deus Ex.

They are 5% of 360 and PS3 libaries, and 95% of Wii library. It depends.

Well, this is System Wars, so fans of each system talk only about exclusives cause all systems would pretty much be the same otherwise, and System Wars would be a boring place.

If there were no exclusives console would be dead. Console are just watered down PCs that survive solely because of their exclusives.

Exclusives are the biggest factor in determining my purchases. I know in the real world it doesn't matter to most people but hey I'm a nerd who keeps up with gaming news so this stuff matters to me.

Exclusives aren't that important, they aren't going to cause me to rush out and buy a certain platform. I don't shed any tears over not being able to play a game, I just play what's available for purchase on the platform I have.

Exclusives areone of the mainreasons I have a PS3 and not a 360. Well, I have a Wii and I would like the games more if they made use of a traditional control scheme.

I got my PS3 for Gran Turismo, Metal Gear, Ratchet and Clank, God of War, and Twisted Metal. I knew that if I wanted to play the exclusive franchises I've been playing for the last decade, I would have to get a PS3.

If you read through the posts in this thread you'll see that I stated I do buy consoles solely because of exclusives.

But this "Console... ...survive solely because of their exclusives." That is what I disagree with. You must have never looked at a sales chart if you think people are buying consoles just because of their exclusives. People buy consoles because they're cheap, they're easy to use and they require minimal effort to play fun, entertaining games.

If consoles didn't have exclusives, I'd only own a Xbox but since PS3 & Wii have exclusive games I simply must play, I own all three.

So yeah very Important.

Exclusives seperate one system from the other, if one system had alot of exclusives and multiplats and the other system had only a few exclusives and just multiplats, what one would you buy? Your going to buy the first system because it gives you the most games to play, no one would buy the second system. Only people that don't think exclusives matter are depressed 360 fanboys, everyone else knows that you buy the system that let's you play the game you can't elsewhere. Multiplats are important too, but look at the Wii, it has more exclusives then any other system out there and it sold the most.

That must explain how the Xbox almost died and survived solely of having Halo available at launch. Xbox was very controversial when it was first announced because it was made by microsoft, who makes windows. Everyone thought the Xbox was a ripoff. If it wasn't for exclusives like Halo, the Xbox would've died back in 2001.

Exclusives give people a reason to buy Console A over Console B

If people were to only buy games off of hardware alone, Microsoft and Nintendo wouldn't even exist in the gaming world and Sony would be dominating since they are much more prominent as a hardware manufacturer

I bought a 360 for Dead Rising and a PS3 for Metal Gear Solid 4

I won't deny that Halo had a significant impact on the Xbox's success but your original statement is absurd. People are buying consoles to play multiplats on them. Some exclusives series are heavy hitters but the majority of them aren't. Multiplats are a huge part of the market and they're topping the sales charts. For most people on SW like you and me, exclusives are very important when purchasing a console. But the thing is SW represents a very small minority of gaming nerds in the real world market.

Lol you can cry all day, I don't care. Both multiplats and exclusives do matter, and exclusives give you the reason to choose one console over another as they offer you what you can't find on the other. And if you look back at older systems what games come to your mind? The exclusives on those systems. Xbox=Halo and Fable, PS2=Too many to list, GameCube=Mario and Super Smash Bros and Zelda ect...

Exclusives do matter, just not topeople that don't have any.

They matter but not as much as people think. For instance- Take a crappy exclusive like Metal Gear on the PS2. Game is hyped by fanboys to know end about how great it supposed to be. Then it gets ported to the XBOX where Splinter Cell and Thief are sitting there. The few XBOX owners who played the demo or bought the game was like "Why in the hell did this crap get so much hype?" Word of mouth spreads and brfore you know it Metal Gear Solid 2 Subsistance seels a miserable 40,000 on the XBOX.

Same thing would of happened to MGS4.

Point is exclusives only matter in an argument on a message board. BUT.......The big difference. When 360 exclusives go to PS3 systems like Bioshock and Mass Effect 2 did they tend to be well recieved and get good sales numbers. Then everyone is hype for the sequal. Most games that are on the PS3 first they do not bother putting on the 360 later...they know 360 owners will not bother with it.

WarTornRuston

There is SO much wrong with your post, it's laughable. Mass Effect was an exclusive? lol no....

Mabey the reason why MGS 2 didn't sell well on Xbox was because there were less Xbox's then there were PS2's. The PS2 was by far the best selling system last gen and the Xbox almost didn't make it, but guess what saved it? An exclusive called Halo! Ya an exclusive (something you don't think matters much) saved the origional Xbox and gave it a fanbase. Another factor in terms of sells is advertising, which they probably didn't put into MGS on Xbox because it didn't have as much of a fanbase back then.

MGS has a HUGE fanbase and it sold very well on PS2, and there is no doubt MGS4 would sell well on 360 because when the game came out all the 360 owners wanted it to go on 360 and they were always bringing up rumors about it coming to Xbox. But it can't because it would have to be on 4 discs lol. Using your logic then I guess Splinter Cell (last game is exclusive) isn't a very good series since Double Agent didn't sell very well on PS3 right?

It can't be because of other factors like fanbase or advertising or anything like that, no it's because it isn't a very good game huh? See your logic is your own worse enemy, the reason why DA didn't sell to well on PS3 is because PS3 owners have MGS4, it's superior in every way to Splinter Cell so why would you buy it?

An exclusive game library is probably the biggest factor in the decision making process of which game system to buy. Other factors do come into play, but I think as gamers, games are probably what most potential customers are aware of.

Exclusivity doesn't automatically mean better than multiplats, and it doesn't even mean that the game will be good. What a first party title does usually have is very high production values because, unlike third party games, the game themselves don't have to be profitable, because the goal is to shift more systems.

You take a game like Halo, and see how many 360s get sold when it releases. That's a good exclusive because it obviously attracts people to the console it is on.

Then you take a game like Gran Turismo, and you see the same boost. Another good exclusive.

Outside of those two games, we see smaller boosts, but since the ps3 has outsold the 360 since its release, it's safe to say the exclusive library is more attractive, even if no one game outside of Gran Turismo ropes people in in droves.

exclusives are the reason we have consoles. If there werent any exclusives then we all would be gaming out of our PCs. Playing Mario Galaxy, Skyward Sword, MGS4, Uncharted, The Last of Us, KILLZONE, Resistance, MAG, Rachet & Clank, Twsted Metal, Halo, Gears of War, all the DLC games from Live and PSN, all in our PCs.

The reason DA didn't sell very well was because it was a botch job on all platforms with input lag, annoying controls, terrible AI and a departure from the "gun as a last resort" type of stealth.

The first 3 splinter cells were the best stealth games ever made and would have beat the living crap out of MGS.

Wouldn't FF13 put a hole in this statement?

They matter but not as much as people think. For instance- Take a crappy exclusive like Metal Gear on the PS2. Game is hyped by fanboys to know end about how great it supposed to be. Then it gets ported to the XBOX where Splinter Cell and Thief are sitting there. The few XBOX owners who played the demo or bought the game was like "Why in the hell did this crap get so much hype?" There is SO much wrong with your post, it's laughable.

Splinter Cell and Thief are better than MGS. Sorry to hurt your feelings. Even they great Kojima said after seeing Splinter Cell for the first time that the Ubi Montreal team did things his team simply could not do and that it was a better stealth game then what he made. Look it up. The only reason that game gets the love it gets is Japanese gamers, the videogame press loves to hype certain products and developers, and it is an exclusive Sony fanbots can taunt. Plus it came out when there was not a heck of a lot of competition. If it released the same day as Halo, Gears, or Madded it would of set on the shelf. The best way to look at this is What PS3 exclusives do the 360, PC, and Wii crowd actually want and vise versa. I am sure you will find if you polled 10,000 people everyone would want the Wii and 360 games.

Less important than ever before with the rise of the multiplat this gen, but still the most important factor when I look to buy a new platform.

GD1551

I'd think exclusives would be more important during the rise of the multiplat.

I can see what you're saying. I suppose I was trying to say that exclusives are a smaller portion of my gaming library than ever before, because of the rise of the multiplat. And since I'm spending less time playing exclusive games, they've become less important to my gaming experience. But, like I said before, they are The determining factor on which systems I buy, and when I buy them.

If you polled 10,000 people the first thing they would want is for multiplats to not usually be the worst version and/or botch jobs on that platform.

The second thing they would want is a few exclusives just so they don't feel stupid on forums.

Actually scratch that.

The first thing people would want is for games to work on the platform, guaranteed, rather than have to research each one to see if it works with your vid card. (see PC)

The second thing they would want is multiplats that aren't botch jobs. (see PS3)

The third thing they would want is exclusives to brag. (see 360)

[QUOTE="almasdeathchild"]jindeed most of the exclusives are crap.ps2 was over the top and they all were great.for ps3,uncharted,killzone,mgs,twisted metal. and i cant think of anymore.so yea i think ps3 has some crap exclusives.

almasdeathchild

lol your either trolling or just a depressed xbox fanboy if you think those exclusives are crap.

the ones i named were the ones that were great........i own then and enjoy them.the rest of ps3 can actually burn

Well that's just your opinion, I don't like every PS3 exclusive either. I don't care for Resistance or MAG and I don't think the new one DUST or whatever it's called is going to be very good. But I enjoy Uncharted, Uncharted 2, Uncharted 3, MGS4, LBP1, LBP2, Killzone 2, Killzone 3, God of War 3, Rachet and Clank, Sly Cooper (not out yet), Heavy Rain, Twisted Metal (not out yet but looks awesome).

There are a few more but I can't think of right now, but the point is that all those games I mentioned are GREAT reasons to buy a PS3 for me. With 360 Iwould only enjoy Halo Reach and Gears, that's about it. If the system offers you so many great exclusives then that's the one people are going to buy because it gives them the most for their money.

Only people who have some sick loyalty to a system that doesn't have many exclusives would deny this. And multiplats do matter, but your comment about 360 having the smoother multiplat experience doesn't because they look the same. No one in real life cares about invisible or minor differences.

SC and Theif being better then MGS is your opinion. MGS is the pioneer of the genre and Kojima is a very respected designer, what he said may or may not have been true back then, but if Kojima says your game is good then that is considered a HUGE compliment. Wether or not you like the series (I doubt you have even played it before) is subjecitve like everyhting else, but MGSpioneered the path for games like Splinter Cell and it created a market for them. It's not just Japanese people that buy the games, that is a gross generalisation.

And I can gurantee you that if MGS4 was released the SAME day as Gears or Madden that MGS4 would overshadow them. It's a much more popular series then those two, not saying they arn't popular either because they are. But not as popular as MGS4. People recognise Snake, no one really knows who Marcus Phonix is. And your poll is pointless because it never happened and it's just specualtion, I think the Wii would be the platform that would get the most sells. But 360 and PS3 would be around the same.

apprently system wars thinks invisible things matter.as much fewer xbox exclusives there are i like them better then most ps3.thats just a simple drawnline.but this is a war where no one wins

Multiplats are the same, I don't have any issues with PS3 multiplats. Just minor differences that no one in real life cares about, besides a few exceptions.

Indeed, I play a game on my PS3 and I go to my friends house who plays it on 360 and I don't see a difference between them. Really it's just a joke to fight about, but there isn't anything wrong with you liking 360 or it's exclusives better. It's all subjective and we have different tastes and no one is wrong for having a prefrence.

Not very important. Unless you are just a fanboy looking for something to justify your purchase of a console.

heretrix

But without Exclusives what would be the point in owning more than one console? :?

what would be the point of me owning BOTH a PS3 and a 360 if there weren't exclusives?
