They matter but not as much as people think. For instance- Take a crappy exclusive like Metal Gear on the PS2. Game is hyped by fanboys to know end about how great it supposed to be. Then it gets ported to the XBOX where Splinter Cell and Thief are sitting there. The few XBOX owners who played the demo or bought the game was like "Why in the hell did this crap get so much hype?" Word of mouth spreads and brfore you know it Metal Gear Solid 2 Subsistance seels a miserable 40,000 on the XBOX.
Same thing would of happened to MGS4.
Point is exclusives only matter in an argument on a message board. BUT.......The big difference. When 360 exclusives go to PS3 systems like Bioshock and Mass Effect 2 did they tend to be well recieved and get good sales numbers. Then everyone is hype for the sequal. Most games that are on the PS3 first they do not bother putting on the 360 later...they know 360 owners will not bother with it.

There is SO much wrong with your post, it's laughable. Mass Effect was an exclusive? lol no....
Mabey the reason why MGS 2 didn't sell well on Xbox was because there were less Xbox's then there were PS2's. The PS2 was by far the best selling system last gen and the Xbox almost didn't make it, but guess what saved it? An exclusive called Halo! Ya an exclusive (something you don't think matters much) saved the origional Xbox and gave it a fanbase. Another factor in terms of sells is advertising, which they probably didn't put into MGS on Xbox because it didn't have as much of a fanbase back then.
MGS has a HUGE fanbase and it sold very well on PS2, and there is no doubt MGS4 would sell well on 360 because when the game came out all the 360 owners wanted it to go on 360 and they were always bringing up rumors about it coming to Xbox. But it can't because it would have to be on 4 discs lol. Using your logic then I guess Splinter Cell (last game is exclusive) isn't a very good series since Double Agent didn't sell very well on PS3 right?
It can't be because of other factors like fanbase or advertising or anything like that, no it's because it isn't a very good game huh? See your logic is your own worse enemy, the reason why DA didn't sell to well on PS3 is because PS3 owners have MGS4, it's superior in every way to Splinter Cell so why would you buy it?
Splinter Cell and Thief are better than MGS. Sorry to hurt your feelings. Even they great Kojima said after seeing Splinter Cell for the first time that the Ubi Montreal team did things his team simply could not do and that it was a better stealth game then what he made. Look it up. The only reason that game gets the love it gets is Japanese gamers, the videogame press loves to hype certain products and developers, and it is an exclusive Sony fanbots can taunt. Plus it came out when there was not a heck of a lot of competition. If it released the same day as Halo, Gears, or Madded it would of set on the shelf. The best way to look at this is What PS3 exclusives do the 360, PC, and Wii crowd actually want and vise versa. I am sure you will find if you polled 10,000 people everyone would want the Wii and 360 games. SC and Theif being better then MGS is your opinion. MGS is the pioneer of the genre and Kojima is a very respected designer, what he said may or may not have been true back then, but if Kojima says your game is good then that is considered a HUGE compliment. Wether or not you like the series (I doubt you have even played it before) is subjecitve like everyhting else, but MGSpioneered the path for games like Splinter Cell and it created a market for them. It's not just Japanese people that buy the games, that is a gross generalisation.
And I can gurantee you that if MGS4 was released the SAME day as Gears or Madden that MGS4 would overshadow them. It's a much more popular series then those two, not saying they arn't popular either because they are. But not as popular as MGS4. People recognise Snake, no one really knows who Marcus Phonix is. And your poll is pointless because it never happened and it's just specualtion, I think the Wii would be the platform that would get the most sells. But 360 and PS3 would be around the same.
