When looking at a company like Nintendo, you'd think they would have a successful online system.

Whats with the constant dissapoints with the online play? No voice chat, no leader boards, no stat tracking, no DLC (this is somewhat understandable since the lack of a standard HDD, but still), etc.

And please don't give me "but Nintendo is focusing on the gameplay and games" because thats straight up garbage and no excuse. Their online system is great, built in Wi-Fi, great Virtual Console system and downloads, and intuitive design. If they really focused on the games like fanboys claim, we'd have Smash Brothers with text/voice chat and leaderboards due to the competative nature of the game.

Unacceptable.

Nintendo is simply trying to maintain their family-friendly image which I'm sure would be marred if the introduced Voice chat on a super competitive game like SSBB. I personally don't approve of it but they have their reasons.

Also, personaly I feel N is going about it kinda the wrong way. I understand their desire to not let strangers trade info, chat, and so on. They are the family console company and they feel strongly about protecting minors and allowing people to have fun and not confront unpleasent experiences online. And that's cool

But that's also what friendcodes are for. If I'm playing with a friend, that means we know each other. At that point I should have full contact with them, voice, text, user name, ranking...everything.

Mario Kart will have Leader Boards and Stat Tracking along with DLC, but you're absolutely right. Nintendo needs to step up their online gaming palette, and actually put forth the effort to make a good online experience.

Everyone's Nintendo and Wiiware Channel is a step in the right direction, but the lack of voice chat, even between friends, is unacceptable, and Nintendo really needs to overhaul their matchmaking system. Friend codes is one thing, but the entire process is completely unintuitive and complex that the FCs are likely driving away the people they're supposed to protect.

I agree! The whole "gameplay over graphics" thing should include decent online. I think that would help the gameplay aspect of the system nintendo, duh.

It's not a priority to sell games for their systems

It's costly, and the Compettion is so far ahead.

The Pay to Play will spice things up, we may one day get VOICE CHAT!

They're so far behind in online play because they know that the average console owner will never even touch online play.

I would venture to guess that saying 20% of console owners use online and voice chat is a high estimate.

Do I know why they dont have it? No. Do I care that its not there. No. Do I care that my PC, the 360, and PS3 have it? No.

Come on Ty, lets put our thinking caps on. How many PSN users are there? Last official number from a few weeks ago was what? Maybe 1.5 million I think. How many PS3 users? 10-11 million. That would be less than 15% and i am sure that not all of them have accounts to play games. XBL has tons of members, but thats lifetime. How many people are on CoD4, Halo 3, or whatever at a time? 18 million? No. A fraction.

There is still a lot of things wrong with voicechat. If nintendo online would be like those video's of xboxlive, honestly i wouldn't play online anymore.

Ideally You would speak through being. So by fulfilling Your purpose in a game, the way You are supposed to interact, You state Your nature. Now there have been a lot of games that include voicechat or text chat to complete this experience, they are integrated as part of the way You are supposed to interact.
But that's really far from ideal.
So i wonder whether they have given this thought, and come up with another way of experiencing online. Maybe they don't and are stalling. Either way i don't mind. I like how it keeps room for discussion and opens minds.

I'm actually glad on this move from Nintendo. I am an SP gamer and only interested in playing RTS online and nothing more. Voicechat if implemented should only be able on your friends and teammares. I have been addicted by MMOs in the past but most of my experiences were bad. It's not that I suck but it was boring. I don't like being with people ONLINE and so I prefer playing alone in the game world which clearly sucks compared to SP. Also, there are too many IDIOTS, LOWLIVES and IMMATURE PEOPLE in MMOs which i don't like.

I think it's a simple case, of not being able to afford it.... or more unwilling to take the risk. Nintendo played it safe with the Wii, making it both the cheapest and weakest console out there, they have appealed to the majority of casual gamers out there and can't really be bothered about their core gamers (Simple business fact). Sony can rely on their other business enterprises, so they can afford to lose with the PS3, like they were doing at the start and Microsoft is in the same boat.

Are you sure thats world wide numbers? Because last I heard was that 50% of US PS3 owners had a PSN account.

nintendo is trying to maintain a family friendly image, but i agree they need to grow a pair and improve a bit, VC and the ablility to turn it off with parental controls can be done with a relece of a headset and a quick system update.

Because online playing may be hazardous and too hard for kids around age 5-9. I mean, that's the age Nintendo is aiming for.

I'm going to surprise you and say that Nintendo will never catch up to Sony's Online, ever. PSN is impressive, not as impressive as Xbox LIve, but don't kid yourself it's chump change.

The Wii hasn't even caught up to Xbox 1 or the PS2's online.

That is correct. Nintendo isn't interested, and it's an expensive venture. Especially considering they are doing quite fine as it is.

So basically, you just told me that you're entirely ignorant of the subject and should probably leave the thread before saying more ignorant things. The Wii has more online features than people give it credit for. The Wii was the first console to introduce the idea of DOWNLOADING GAMES FROM THE INTERNET with VC. They have "one-click" internet fuctionality in almost all of their big multiplayer games. People only bash the Wii's online because it doesn't have chat, which is a perfectly acceptable decision considering there are so many worthless e-bullies out there that leave a giant stain on internet gaming.

Wow, you Sheep can't take the truth very well. Friend codes suck. No HDD sucks. No Voice Chat sucks. No Ethernet Plug Sucks. ANd get your facts straight about the VC, as a Wii owner with FOUR full pages of VC games, Nintendo didn't introduce DL games from the net, silly.
