Personally I think a decade for a few reasons like the cost of development and the fact that the big 3 seem to already want to stretch the current generation. Plus other than smarter AI , better physics, and a smooth framerate what more could you want. Graphics are already good enough to get pretty close to photo realism the next gen will look amazing.

About as long as this gen. Which was about as long as last gen.

Once the Wii U releases, this gen is over.

I really want to see what that thing can do. Because that Japanese Bird tech demo did not impress me.

I'm still catching up on this generation, since I only really got into it starting from late 09.:P But assuming that they continue to support their hardware in the a similar fashion to this generation, I believe it'll last even longer than thing gen.

This only depends on how one sees this as a good thing. Many like to upgrade every 4-5 years, while I myself probably won't upgrade to next-gen systems until mid-2015. I have a ton of PC/Wii games to catch up on as well as playthrough many console games that are on the PS3.:P I might upgrade my PC around then as well, cause the less I pay, the happier I am.:P (Minus the 3DS purchase)

Yeah, same. Things that I can't play don't impress me anymore.

It's already started. Where in the middle of the transaction between generations.

Same here I can't tell if its because I'm older and jaded. Or if its because almost everything this generation looks good but only a small percentage of it plays good.

Depends what they're going for next gen. If it's a flat upgrade like this gen, and they push for every game to be 1080p, and look great then the gen will probably last about as long as they always have because people will eventually want better. If they are going to take a step back, and push motion control gaming, family friendly gaming, casual gaming then there won't be a huge need (assuming it's more popular than gaming is now). Or if they use cloud gaming services then they won't even need to upgrade for a much longer time.

I'd go with the latter, personally. This gen has been such a disappointment.

This was the correct answer folks. The moment Wii U was unveiled, speculation to the duration of this generation came to a close. Safe to say 2012 is the last year of the 7th gen.

As long as this gen or longer because companies are kind of having trouble affording to make games this gen.

I say about 6 years, give or take a year, about the same as this generation, there's always some carry over though like if a new new Xbox and PlayStation come out I assume they'll still make games for current generations consoles for a year or maybe more, so people can make the next gen jump at their leisure as people are bound to wait for things like price drops, more games on the market, while enthusiasts may be willing to pay more to get it early and play what's available; plus if next gen consoles are released their install bases will be smaller, they're still be a desire by publishers to get sales from the larger userbase of this generation. Anyhow, technology just keeps getting better and better, maybe there'll be a technological jump that's unforeseen that may shorten the console life cycle, but I doubt it'll grow by any great extent.

I wasn't asking how long this generation will last! I asked how long the NEXT generation would last.

2020 sounds like the right time for them to start the ninth gen. It seems like generations are starting to last longer due to significant add-ons like Kinect and Move.

I honestly think it'll be a very long gen. I think that two gens from now they'll be trying to pin down photorealism as their main sale point.
