Though the slim will put a dent in the XBOX lead I just don't see it overtaking the XBOX. Once the PS3 starts to close in Microsoft will just lower their system $50 to jump ahead. Unfortunately the PS3 just started behind the 8 ball. I do see them becoming profitalbe in the near future though. I really think the userbase will grown with the Slim and price reduction so you see their software sales becoming really close to the XBOX. Also, isn't software sales really where the money is at for these companies. The systems are almost loss leaders except for the WII.
It wont ever happen, the lead is to big and the 360 would have to basically stop selling. If Sony would of released the Slim a year ago they might of had a chance.
I don't think it will but just as long the hardware and software sell well enough and make profit then Sony would still be good even if they don't pass up the other two consoles in sales.
thats a pretty big guess, why don't you do the math and tell us exactly how many systems the PS3 has to sell every month compared to the 360 to pass it in sales by Dec 2010.
then tell us again if you think next year will be the year.

For the PS3 to pass the 360 in sales by the end of 2010, it would have to outsell the 360 by ~523k units every month. Good luck with that.
Barring a complete collapse of the 360 and assuming the PS3 sees strong long-term sales with the Slim (which is a big assumption at this point), a good guess would be about 3-4 years. Of course this is all academic, because the chances of either console catching the Wii are slim to none.
Yeah, I think the TC should have said I think the PS3(hardware and software)will become more profitable than the XBOX 360 by Dec. 2010. He might have a chance there but definitely not in pure sales. No chance and I love my PS3 but no way.

I would say it all depends on this xmas. The one that sells more between the 2this holiday is the must have system. I feel that if Sony stays at a good rate of over selling 360 it will take maybe 2 years, if not then 360 won in sales this gen. Better believe though when PS4 comes they will not make the same mistake twice with a expensive or hard to develop for system and will probably be back in the lead again.
first we assume 360 is ahead by 7-8 million. then u find the avg sales per year of both consoles, which is around 7 million for 360 and 9 million for ps3. now, if PS3 doubles its sales in the next year, it would put it to a total of aroun 18 million give or take a few mill. subtract 7 million that 360 avg's assuming that its sales wont go down even tho they barely have exclusives coming out, and that leaves us with 11 million. subtract another 7-8 million from that which is the 360's lead, and that would leave the ps3 ahead in sales by 3-4 million within the next year.

Which will never happen. They've already said the 360 will continue being made for as long as the PS3, and since the 360 sells at profit, they can afford to keep making them.
you apperently forgot 10+ exclusives comming out fo the 360 from now to next year, not to mention the zune marketplace, facebook, twitter, and the natal cam. Face it Ps3 will be last for the rest of this gen.

you can get a good blu-ray player for $199 (a cheaper one for $149)
also, the average consumer doesnt care about 'exclusives'
it is not possible, unless they pack ps3's in Wii boxes and sell them for $199

Well... PS3 still can get 2nd place in Europe :) theres only 1mln gap here, also PS3 and 360 go head to head with per year sells, so it's not such bad situation.
