How long until a winner can be declared.

Either when one has an insurmountable lead over the other or when the next gen consoles are released.

maybe when sales become completely patterned over a couple years' period as well.

Historically the time to determine has already passed. 6 Months after release of ALL Consoles on the market has determined the winner everytime.

How the Consoles do in that first 6 months going against each other has always reflected the end results. Were 8 months into all consoles on the market this Gen and the trends have been slowing Sales for 2 of the Consoles and increasing Sales for 1. The Slowest Selling month of the year for gaming hardware even saw Big gains for 1 console.

People will say its too early to tell etc but just look back and youll see its not too early at all

srsly tho, its not right to even deem one company a winner. winning could mean totally different things depending on the goal of the company.

In about 2 or 3 years time it is to early to say

In 3-4 years we will have a better idea of where the consoles are at and how long they are going to last after that.

The Sega genesis in fact wa sout for 2 years before the SNES was released. It had a nice size install base then Like this Gen the Nintendo Console came out and that lead sharnk,died and then turned around seeing Sega get buried.

Once the SNES hit the Scene and BOTH consoles were out at the Same time the SNES Dominated until the end with the Genesis never outselling the SNES again.

The 360 Is the Sega Genesis this Gen and the Wii is the SNES. 360 had its nice big lead and that leads gone. Next Month Wii is market leader and theres no looking back

not a very good comparison because The Bell bottoms were a clothing linked to a specific era of time. based on that definition every Console is a Fad as its a product of its time and replaced right away when the next time comes.

1.  Apple computers weren't competing directly with the NES, the SMS was, and it got spanked from day one.

2.  The Genesis had a 2 year lead and lost, but you didn't say how well the two consoles sold directly against each other.  My guess is the SNES outsold the Genesis from month to month from the time it was released until they stopped making both consoles.

Usually, when it comes to the console wars, a dud stays a dud, and a hit stays a hit.  Sure the race doesn't always go to the quickest, nor the fight to the strongest, but that's the way to bet.

Actually, Bell-bottom jeans is a great comparison. You just don't understand. I don't think the Wii is a fad (right now). I was trying to show him that a fad can go long as however. A fad's key point of it being called one is the popularity value of it drops pretty dramatically. As mention before, bell-bottom jeans were popular in the 70's. Strangely in the early 80's, there were hardly ever around. TV, video games, and internet was once consider a fad. However, there was never a drop-off in popularity in these products.

well personally i wont be calling a victor until 26th dec 2008. at the mo theres still too many variables to consider such as price drops and unexpected killer apps for all 3 consoles, and how they will affect the market. by 2009 i expect that things will be more clear cut.

in the handheld war i think i can safely say that the DS has won though at this stage. theres very little chance of the PSP catching up imho.

Everyone says that its too early to decide a winner of this gens Console War. So when will be the time to call a winner? 2 years, 3 years? Let me know what you think.

Holiday season 2007 will yield the "winner" of this console war...With all of the so called big gun coming this holiday for each console, we will see if the 360 can holds its lead, if the Wii can surpass the 360, or the PS3 makes its presence known this gen. After the holidays, sales will drop off and once the dust has settled, the industry would have decided a winner....

All the consoles will be on equal ground this holiday season, no more excuses...
