How long until the PS3 Goes the way of the Dreamcast?! My prediction next year

After the bad news this week about sony posting record losses and them losing Incognito after warhawk is finished, I came to the conclusion that the PS3 WILL go the way of the dreamcast, the question is when? My prediction is Sony will give one more try this Holiday season and the sales will be poor therefore forcing Sony to discontinue the PS3 early Next year. my prediction is the PS3 will be discontinued by Feb of 08. I really hate to say this because I was the biggest sony supporter, But now Im just plain pissed, its like they are purposly killing their own creation. BrutonNYC

dude dont demean things like that...if i can remember correctly xbox also went into a big slump a couple months after launch..besides...theres not alot of good stuff coming out till about late summer..and if you cant wait for that then your just impatient dude...what you have to realize is that theres people out there that are waiting for games to come out to actually buy a ps3..and thats sort of like a trump card to sony...you claimed you bought your ps3 at launch which was ok..but you didnt get any decent games...i bought mine like 3 months ago but i use it as a dvd player in the mean time...im being very patient and im still confident that they'll get out of this slump just like other companies...also...the dreamcast was a great system but was beaten by the ps2 because of what the ps2 offered

now..you said you used to be a big supporter of sony right?...but now you have the bad idea of them cuz they didnt supply anything to hold you out...well thats sort of our faults as people to buy something so early...but you really have to be patient because thats whats gonna get them out of the slump

PS3 will do just fine. It won't kill the competition like before but it is in no way the next dreamcast and this link supports that statement IMO

Sony is far from loaded -- the majority of their divisions are in debt and they just ACTUALLY posted 1.9Billion dollar losses for the current fiscal year..... 1 BILLION PER QUARTER. Sony may have had deep pockets at one point, but right now MS has pockets that go all the way down to their boots.

I think Spiderman just did about maybe $150 - 200 Million profit with it now passing $600 Million after you calculate fees. I don't know how much the spent on P&A but they aren't at $300 Million profit yet I'm sure

Actually I did the math and they are probably at around maybe $63 - 100 Million profit at this point with a WW intake of $629 Million. After Fees, P&A and the budget...

Also I believe Tobey Mcguire gets a certain backend percent on any profit so those numbers could be even less.

Sorry I deal with these kinds of numbers daily, literally so I hate when people think the numbers they see mean earnings minus just the budget.

I never said it wouldn't. I will do well over a billion in profit with DVD sales, Cable right sales, PPV etc..

Just saying though it didn't make 200-300 profit yet. Lot of fees and stuff people don't take into account. Some very big movies went into the red even after box office release that people don't even know about.

And some so called flops made money. Like Waterworld which people mock but actually it made cash and costner to this day laughs about it.

i think at this point its more or less common sense that any '2nd party' developers, or ANY developers under Sonys umbrella, would be wanting to jump ship about now. it's all about the money in this industry, and the ps3 is not a green console - as in it's user base isn't high enough to make a profit on your game.

anybody who thinks otherwise is wrong. there is NO dev loyalty other than the loyalty Sony buys -- and that can only go so far.

proof that Sony doesn't have a large enough install base for the PS3 for games to make money? the proof is out there, there was actually a gamespot article about it a while back and the PS3 still hasn't hit the sweet spot where it makes sense to develop for it.

and what else do you want proof for? the common sense bits? sorry mate - can't help you there, you either have it or you don't.

   The part where you say any 2nd party developer would want to jump ship. That part makes you look like you're talking out of your....somewhere unpleasent. Insomniac, Factor 5, Icognito (Unfounded rumors not acknowledged) and Level 5 don't seem to have any problems. And while the userbase is smaller then the competition it still has enough for any developer to make a profit depending on if the old 500k (I'll see if I can find the article) number is still accurate. There is no proof saying it's not "possible" for developers to make money on the PS3 right now. Now, is it cost efficient to make games for the PS3 if you are 2nd party? Depends on the funding Sony provides, know most of those figures? And for 3rd party, well they are waiting until the userbase is larger next year which is the smart thing to do for a business. I wasn't arguing that the most profitable console for developers is the PS3 but that it isn't just suddenly out of the game. And you can lay off the common sense junk, it's just the sign of a weak arguement.Ibacai
