I'm about to buy a surround system, just bought a new tv and thought "dude im going to need a bluray player, can't be any different.."

So i headed down to the nearest media store and asked them about which one i should pick, he clearly stated that the PS3 is one of the best and cost exactly the same as a regular bluray player, if i was going to get something better i would be paying 5 times more then what a ps3 with no games cost x_x

So yeah, i'm getting a ps3 but that's almost only because of the exellent bluray player, the gaming part is a bonus.:)

Am i alone in this? or has other people bought it only for that reason?

I doubt most people on a gaming website will have bought a PS3 purely to play Blu Ray movies, I would expect to see some fakeboy responses from team anti-PS3. I haven't bough any Blu Ray movies as of yet, I don't have a HD TV so it would be kind of pointless, I probably will when I do upgrade to HD though.

I bought it on the playstation brand at launch. A little disapointed for first six months until games started coming out. Resistance seemed like the only awesome game i had at the beginning. I barely watch blu-ray to be honest. Its a nice add-on but i like some other features that the ps3 has. Now i am completely satisfied with my ps3.

Never used the blue ray player even to watch the movie which came with it.

My father on the other hand bought it because it was a blue ray player then asked me to loan him games.

I bought a 360 for games and blueray player for movies. And guess what, I actually get to play good games and the entire package cost less than a PS3!

Since I watch and buy a lot of movies and have a HDTV, BR was certainly a factor in deciding which console I was going to buy (already have a Wii...decision was between 360 or PS3). Having said that, it certainly wasn't the only factor. I bought PS1 and PS2 at launch. I've had 12 years of Sony consoles and loved every single second of the gaming experience they have provided. I've been alive long enough to seen the begining of home consoles and ALWAYS been involved in gaming...and for my money, the PS brand is easily king when it comes to gaming.

I expect the same from the PS3, althought it will never top the PS2...I doubt anything ever will. But the games and diversity I love are still here even if not to the extent I would like yet. But they ARE coming. In the meantime there has been a number of really great games that I've played and I really think the PS3 is a quality piece of hardware with great games.

When I decided to buy another console, the ONLY thing that drew me to the 360 was the more established library. I rarely play online, and I don't play FPS or arcade racers, and that seemed to wipe out the majority of the library. The games I mostly wanted were multiplat so I wouldn't miss out if I got a PS3. The 360 was $50 cheaper, but the PS3 had BR....that clinched it.

I'm happy with my choice and love the PS3.

In Denmark, a bluray player cost the same as a ps3, + the ps3 is one of the best out there atm. Did you buy your xbox/bluray player used or just got it extremely cheap?

It's been almost 1 year to the day since I last bought a PS3 game. I never bought a single BR movie.

You might ask why?

Well simple answer... I don't like any PS3 games to date and BR movies are to expensive.

So my paper weight/dust collector... Has been sleeping alot. I don't know when I can wake it up again. $500... $500... Why?

Yeah, I have netflix... But I switch back to DVD's only because of how bad BR makes some films look. Oceans 12 or 13 was absolutely horrible.

Bought for Blu-Ray, got games as a bonus, but note, I bought it a long time ago, when basically all that was good was Resistance, and I didn't like the demo. But now I have a lot more games for it, about 5 PS3 games, than I have gotten about 15 more PS2 games for it. However, I have 36 games on my 360, so still pretty far behind(including original Xbox games.)

I bought it for the glut of RPG's that I thought would come in the months following launch.

My reasoning was for the games, but over the last year and a half or so I would say its primary function in my living room would be that its a Blu-Ray player.

So you probably don't own a PS3 or an HDTV. I have a PS3 and a 55inch Sony Bravia tv, that I watch Blu-Ray movies in and I love it. Watching upconverted DVDs on a PS3 is horrible. So I know you don't own a PS3.

The TV I play games on is not HD, so therefore no Bluray usage. Maybe when I get my 32 inch LCD later this year I will buy a movie or two for experimenting on the TV. I download my HD movies and watch them on my 24 inch LCD monitor, fo free.

Well when I purchased my PS3 my family already had 2 Blu-Ray players and a HD-DVD player so no I did not buy it for a Blu-Ray player. Also I play my PS3 on a SDTV in my bedroom, I leave watching HD movies to the HDTV in the Living room. I have 7 PS3 games and I've played most of them all the way though (Except Uncharted: Drake's Fortune which I recently picked up) and I've bought 3 Blu-Ray movies but only watched one on my PS3 (Donnie Brasco)
