My rule, a console needs 10 games that I truly want to play before I shell out the money to get a system.  And ideally, the majority of them are exclusives and at least one of them is a "killer-app".  Because I like to save money and space.

For example, I bought a Wii and PSP and ended up not playing it much because there weren't a lot of games that really interested me.  I thought they would come, but they didn't.

I say this because Nintendo 3DS, PS Vita and Wii U all have my interest, but I don't want to spend the money and find out that there might not be a whole lot of games that gen that I want to get for it.

For example, 3DS has Ocarina of Time, Fire Emblem Awakening, Animal Crossing, Zelda 3DS soon and Smash 3DS upcoming.  That's 5.  I'm waiting on 5 more.  The Vita right now does not have a whole lot to be honest.

So far the Wii U has Pikmin 3, the soon-to-come Mario Kart, the upcoming Zelda and the upcoming Smash, so I need like 6 more.

How many quality games does a console need to have before you buy it?

Amount doesn't matter, depends on the game. I would have bought a Wii U the day they announced Super Mario Galaxy 3 but they f*cked it upand did Super Mario 3D Land instead

Quality is implied though.

I'm not just talking about 10 decent games.  I'm talking about 10 games that I REALLY want to buy.

I use simple rule - it needs enough exclusive games I want that their combined price at least matches the price of a console. So it would be about 7 game for PS4 and 9 for Xbox One.

I might make an exception if there's enough money to be made on reviewing PS4 titles.

I bought a Wii U at launch, and after that I realised that I shouldn't be buying launch consoles anyway.

Still depends on the game. The quality of a fantastic game like Gears of War and a landmark masterpiece like Super Mario Galaxy 2 is different enough for the latter to sell me on a console alone.

Great rule.  I agree.

For me, the majority of the time, I pick up games used, and since I usually wait a while before I get a second console, this will apply here.

I don't get it why does it matter, i mean ok you wait for 10 quality games and then buy the console, are you then going to buy all 10 quality games???

I'm buying the ps4 at launch, i already know from history that sony produces a good array of top AAA quality games from all genres, watchdogs looks amazing so i'll be getting that and fifa, by the time i finish watch dogs and get bored of fifa, another quality game will be out and i will buy that, i also have a ton of indie games to have a look at. why wait unless your going to buy all 10 at once.

bezza2011

Yes.  Maybe not all right away, but games are cheaper if you wait a year.  For example, I could get Killzone Shadowfall used in box for probably <$30 instead of $60 in 2014.

The point is that I buy consoles with the long haul in mind.  I need to know there's enough content to keep me satisfied for a whole gen.  Not all consoles do that, so they end up collecting dust.

10 must have games? You can barely find 10 exclusives with these consoles let alone 10 that you really want to play.

I normally get a new console within the 1st 3 months so I dont really wait for games since I know all consoles end up getting loads of quality titles over the years..

It's different for everybody.  Usually my rule is a console needs ten 9+/10 games.  But then again there's some 8/10 or even 7/10 games that I LOVE playing and can play for many hours.

I'd never buy a console or system for 1 game

10 really good exclusives is a good rule. I don't have anything specific. But in practice it's probably about like that. I want it to have about 10 really strong exclusives, AND the promise of at least that number of top games in the future. I probably wouldn't buy a "dead" console unless it was on clearance.

yeah.  for me, space matters.  i think having all the consoles of every gen is just clutter.  so typically, at one time, i only want 1 or 2 consoles at a time (maybe a handheld).

I buy my console with the long haul in mind and next gen is crazy compared to this gens launch line ups, this the biggest list i've seen ever, good start but if your into the used games then i do get your point.

I buy all systems within the first year of launch regardless of it's library. I've never had a system where I didn't find games to play throughout the generation

That number is unimportant. The important thing is how much interesting content does it provide to me and how much support with decent games it has.

I usually go by this method, total price of full priced exclusive games equal to the price of the console itself.

1 or 2 games that I would consider "9+", 2-3 games that I would consider "8+" and at least 5 more that could land anywhere on my score spectrum that I would be interested in playing. Although, I've been known to buy a console for just one game, only to find many more interesting games later (360 for Dead Rising, then found AC, Forza 2, Mirror's Edge, Kameo, etc etc).

It only needs one for me. I only need one to play my system. My first Wii game was Mario kart, first ps3 game was cod mw2, first 3ds game was Zelda Ocarina. And Wii U will either be WWR or X depending on my finances.

Rule of thumb is around the price point for the system or around 4-5 or so if they are awesome enough.

Problem is I never follow the rule of thumb I imposed upon myself so it might as well not be there. I have no real rule, it just matters if I want to buy one that day or not.

Around 5 at the time of purchase, but one of those 5 has to be an absolute must have.

The games simply need to have value to go with them.

I didn't follow that plan when I got my PS3. That was my biggest gaming regret so far. I played God of War, Uncharted, Resistance (this game is muddy underwear), LBP, and a couple others, and honestly all of them wrapped together didn't even give me 5% of my total playtime on Halo 3 this generation. Buying a 360 for $300-$400 for JUST Halo 3 (let alone all the other games available on it) would have been a more worthwhile investment to me than the PS3 and the entire library of games I own for it, or have rented.

Though part of the reason for getting it was most of my friends were/are Wii or 360 owners, so I was hoping to add some variety to it. Nobody cares about it though.

This upcoming gen I'm being waaaaay more stingy about how I spend my money. I've got my PC so far which I'll always have without question. Thinking about getting the 3DS. There are probably over a dozen games I have some interest in as well as backwards compatibility with DS games. That'll be worth $130 I think (I'm planning to get the 2DS). None of the other systems look worth my money yet.

In theory only 1 game )or some hardware feature I really like).

But I could buy a console fairly easily, they are not that expensive all things considered, so if it produces one game that I find personally would be worth it, I would buy it.

Such games are extremely rare and far between, last gen had none such game, not the 360 nor the PS3 had anything remotely system seller-ish. Nintendo came close a few times.

As of now there is no game on the horizon which makes me really want to buy any console due to the games (getting a PS4, but that is certainly not because of teh games shown so far).

Ideally ofcourse, instead of 1 game we would have 10 such games on a console, but most people seem willing to buy a console for one game, hence the word "system seller"

Last Gens system seller btw: was Wii Sports btw ;)

Guess it would depend on the game / games.

I usually get all consoles at launch. Looking back I could of waited on all of them except the Dreamcast and the original XBOX. I would of bought an XBOX for Halo alone. PGR and Dead Or Alive 3 was just a nice bonus.
I would of bought the Dreamcast for Soul Calibur or NFK2K. Getting them both at launch along with the best day one line-up in history made that my favorite launch.

I can tell you the Gamecube, 360, ps2, ps3, Wii, and by the looks of it, the PS4 launch line-ups were not worth picking up a system for. The Wii U I thought had a good launch line-up. Too bad most of the games had been out on other systems for a while.

Only one really. I bought an Xbox for Kotor. Bought my PS2 for GTA3. Bought my 360 for Halo 3. Bought my 3DS for Pokemon. Though in this day and age where exclusives are becoming less of a factor and multiplats are rivaling them in quality, it is becoming less of a deciding factor for me.

Twice what the system is worth. I prefer to wait a very long time to buy a new console.
