This is a question that intrigued me for some time. What's your take on this?

Outside of System Wars they still have quite a bit of brand power. Maybe not enough as to move a load of consoles, but enough to be immediately recognizable within the console "race".
It obviously will have went down and people will be looking at the next Sony & Microsoft systems nearly equally. However I do believe there's a good chance Sony will be able to build back up most of the brand power lost to Microsoft next generation if what I think will happen regarding 1st / 2nd Party game development versus 3rd Party next generation.
Seeing as a ton of really good games are coming in the future, I think it will still live on greatly. They might need to get around the same price as their competitors next generation.
In ps3's 2-3rd year you are seeing all of these exclusives coming out and your wondering about the Playstation brand name AFTER THIS GEN lol? I think its safe to say that by the end of this gen there is going to be alot of believers of Sony going into next gen and the ps4. Actually you are starting to see people 2nd guessing their purchase now if they didn't chose the ps3. Get ready cause Sony is just starting to get their games rolling out so they are ove lapping each other with new ip exclusives and their sequels. Its getting hard to save up enough just for their games much less when you throw in the multiplates.
Patients and prior thinking of your choices rewards all that do so:)
It will obviously remain a very powerfull brand.Dont forget the success of PS1 and GOD of all consoles PS2.

Yes, but the point is, PS3 doesn't seem to have even remote chance of winning this gen, and will have to really try hard to come second (of course, this all is from current perspective of things). Nothing is set in stone, though. In next gen, there will be also entirely new generation of potentional customers, plus many people that were skeptical or even didn't aware of Xbox 360, I'm talking especially about small countries in Europe, and other small territories in the world, will be very well aware of next Xbox. I can back up my point by saying that many somewhat legendary franchises in games have lost a substantial part of its brand power, while something very contemporary like Halo is very strong, stronger than Zelda now. I also wonder how Wii's success will influence the people's perception (even those who are not dedicated gamers) of Nintendo in next gen.

I know there are people that don't have any console, yet they recognize PlayStation name. They still have me :P I couldn't care less about how many consoles MS's is selling, Sony is winning where it matters imo. With Sony you at least know there are a ton of high quality AAA franchises that are always going to make it to the platform, plus you know they have a ton of new IP's each gen. All I'm seeing with MS is Halo, DLC, and timed exclusives.

Plenty. I think sony had a huge ego from the success of the PS2 that it lead them to believe the PS3 was bullet proof. Obviously they were arrogant to the apeal of the xbox360 with its lower price and online service. The next gen, I actually think sony can be even more of a threat to MS, as they may let the success of the 360 act as an ego trip too. If anything, the PS3 has been really an akward test bed for sony, and will only make their next console even better.
A few things sony has going for them going into the next gen.
The PSN has been established.
Blu-ray will be a lot cheaper.
Solid 1st and 2nd party devs making content for the PSN.
Humility.
They could also pull a MS next gen. Going from a near zero market position, to edging out the PS3. It depends on the price point, time of release, games library at release etc.
ps3 is the most reliable console bult out of the 3.Psn_FF7numbaOne
It's between that and the Wii. I don't see that as a huge thing though, considering MS implemented the e74 and RROD repair warranty.
I think we've seen the low point for Sony. They made some questionable calls, and some may still pan out while others will hopefully serve as reminders to Sony moving forward. Nintendo and Microsoft have really made the "Console Wars" are war again, and kudos to both for making the strategic moves needed to restore some balance to the sector. The worst possible scenario is not having competition to drive innovation. Moving forward, they still have the most powerful console, the largest first party development system, a legion of PS2 owners who have yet to buy a HiDef gaming system, and several years left in the current generation. If they can continue to build first party AAA titles that show off the the unequaled power of their system, they'll get a lion's share of those that have been following Sony all along... just slower than the early adopters. It's very unlikely that they will ever dominate the console sector like the PS2 did again. But when we look back on this generation a few years from now, I think Sony will be in a much stronger position than the last two would indicate. And if the people enjoyed their time with the PS3, the brand loyalty will continue to grow.
Sony is somewhat losing in all markets right now, Samsung dominates Japan now, Sony is in second place there, struggling to keep up with samsung, samsung is LOADED with chaaa ching.......samsung should make a console........they have enough money & brand power :P, personaly i think thats what helped the decision to push blu ray......sony needs some serious cashThis is a question that intrigued me for some time. What's your take on this?

My thoughts exactly, Because the PS4 will be affordable since launch day and dominate the same way the first playstations did, price was the only issue that held back the Ps3, never again :)let me put it this way people wont be getting second jobs to afford the PS4.

Well, a weak opening library didn't help, although I think that was more down to the 1 year delay, and the difficult architecture.
Doesn't matter. As long as next gen they release a relatively cheap system with amazing 3rd party support then they'll reclaim their market share for the most part.
Its the PS2 install base that saved the PS3 from failing hard in its first year (I mean even harder :P ) PS4 doesnt have that same luxury of a #1 sales predessor. The answer is simple. Account2099
I said to someone before though.
The good thing is Sony has humbled themselves somewhat :P Yet they could pull off something like Microsoft did this gen, which was having a minimal marketshare last gen, but stepping up a year early with a good console.

no way. If they release PS4 first, they are essentially killing off the PS3s lifecycle. PS3 isnt even 3 years old yet and is only beginning to be financially reasonable to sustain (if the price doesnt drop).[QUOTE="-Traveller-"][QUOTE="Account2099"]Its the PS2 install base that saved the PS3 from failing hard in its first year (I mean even harder :P ) PS4 doesnt have that same luxury of a #1 sales predessor. Also, these consoles won't be coming out, more than likely until 2011/2012 at the earliest (reasonably).

i keep hearing 2011-2012..............why? I personally think the next Xbox will launch fall 2010. Xbox had a 4 year lifecycle. 2010 is a 5 year cycle with 360. And unlike last gen, the 360 will be kept on the market (for one it rakes in $450+ million of LIVE gold per year).[QUOTE="-Traveller-"][QUOTE="Account2099"] no way. High street stores are closing. Releasing a console too early would not gain traction.
Xbox finished early because MS wanted to focus on the 360, and with it's limited marketshare, developers began to move away. 360 is popular this gen, making money, so MS have no need to come out with a new console too early, and run the risk of releasing another Xbox 1.
I think Sony has lost serious ground from dominating one generation and running third in another. I have a 360 which I bought, I have access to a PS3. I feel I bought the better system for my taste. I do not think, in this gen, "PS-anything" is commensurate with gaming in general. I am very happy about this. I'm happy Sony has lost it's stronghold on "gaming" in general. This makes for better competition and better variety for us, gamers and consumers. In the next gen Sony knows Microsoft is more than a fluke and Nintendo is more than a novelty. Sony will look at where they went wrong in this gen to dominate the last gen and just contend currently. They will make improvements. This benefits us. A reality check is never a bad thing. Is Sony going to be viable and strong in the next gen? Of course. Will they be smarter, attack earlier and more often. I believe so. I will buy, in the next gen, the system which suits my needs and taste best whether it's Microsoft, Nintendo or Sony. I'm happy, I can't lose and nor can you.
tbh it doesnt matter, and proof is the Wii. Gamecube was not as good as Nintendo hoped for and now look at how well the Wii has done in sales. Yea it might not help us hardcore people but its making lots of dough and thats what Nintendo-a business- had set out to do. So basically the Ps brand can have like less than half the brand power or twice as much as when they had the PS2 going, but that still doesn't always equal sales. PS3 had a lot of brand rec and look how its been doing. Not bad but awfully disappointing. This is a question that intrigued me for some time. What's your take on this?

yeah. totally agreed. when people see a video game, they immediately think "playstation" and in some cases, "xbox"Outside of System Wars they still have quite a bit of brand power. Maybe not enough as to move a load of consoles, but enough to be immediately recognizable within the console "race".

When we're in SW we get stuck in that mentality, but in the consumer market, very few think about who has the most sales etc. They think "PS1 was awesome, PS2 was awesome, maybe PS3 is.". 360 has had great success, and that's really pushing the sales for that console.
I think they will still have a lot of brand power left. Look at Nintendo, right before the wii was the gamecube and it was a failure (sales). It just that they got cocky and thought that if they put out a console that was $500 - $600, that their loyal fans would jump right on it.
It's too early for next-gen, the PS3 and Wii are 2.5 and the 360 is 3.5 years old, add to that a recession to the equation, next-gen gonna take longer this time which is somehow an advantage for Sony to get back on track.
For the time being, the brand is still strong in EU and is gaining momentum in Japan because of the heavy hitters Japan got the last couple of months and at the end of this year they will have FFXIII which is a big console mover, what slowed down the sales in Japan ( worldwide too) are the games and they are coming now.
As far as NA goes, it is the weakest region for Sony and I think what kept them in last place is the insane price tag and the awful late launch but they are doing a great job for maintaining a heavy competition in games and what is missing is a price cut.
That being said, I think it's so hard to even surpass the 360, let alone the Wii.
I know the PSP is not doing as good as the DS but it is making the PS brand have some weight.
