I was just wondering what others thought of in terms of playing on an HDTV compared to a standard television? I think there is a huge difference but some of my friends think there isn't much of a difference. What do you guys think? I play on a 52 inch sony bravia tv so I think there is a huge difference.

Play a computer game at a resolution of 640*480, then play one at a resoultion of 1024*768 (720p quality but without widescreen)or higher and you'll see the difference.

Its looks a bit nicer, a nice luxary if you can afford it, but nothing that would really play different on playing Oblivion or such game on a SDTV or a HDTV. I know because I went from SDTV toHDTV. I thought Oblivion looked awesome on SDTV, the effect wasn't that much more. The sad thing if that is hurts the looks of last gen games, oh well can't do much about that.

Everything is more detailed, that's about it, it's all clearer.

But a fish will still look like a fish, a car looks like a car, for e.g.

HD makes everything clearer, shows sharper details and much better picture quality overall.

But as for how much of an improvement, it really depends on the game. Gears of War doesn't look significantly better on an HDTV but Rainbow Six Vegas? The difference is practically night and day.

First i was playing on a sdtv. Then to hdtv. But there was shadowing and a possibility of screen burn. So i could only play for about 45 minutes a daywhich really sucked (especially on weekends). So i moved into my room. YAY! The difference isn't that great to warrant buying a hdtv for gaming only.Watching movies and sport is much better reason to get one.

Being a PC gamer i see i major difference, if its a big SDTV its awful, but on small SDTVs its really not so much an issue.

Good art design and style can shine through regardless, and if someone has never seen a game on a HDTV they won't notice the difference or care anyway.

It's not a huge difference, it's jsut easier to see more detail and the picture is a little more crisp, but the graphics themselves don't improve.

Then turn AA on when you play at the low resolution, and then turn it off for the higher resolution. Since monitors are generally smaller then tv's it makes sense to sit closer.....

The picture looks better IMO when playing games. You see more attention to detail and crisper textures. It's just annoying when people think that HDTV's make no difference opposed to standard televisions. There is a difference there definitely

I totally agree with you bro. I played on a standard tv for a little while when my HDTV was getting fixed. and the text and caved in graphics sucked. It does look better in HD forsure.

and also you dont have to go all out on a 1080p tv. I had a 23inch 480p tv for awhile and its nothing special but it gets the job done. i got it for $299 at walmart

640x480 versus 1280x720. Do you know how to add/subtract? Good, you're one step closer.

Is that TV 1080p? Then you're looking at 640x480 versus 1920x1080. The detail's higher, AA is imperative, and there's progressive scan.

Yes, the difference is significant and the impact is severe.

we have a 52" lcd, it looks pretty darn amazing imo, i can't stand playing on anything smaller anymore

it's pretty rare when you have graphics on a 52" that look better the closer you get (well, so long as you don't faceplant)

Depends on the size of the TV. If your playing on a TV that is 20" or smaller your games will look fine. It's when you play on the big screen TVs 26" and up that you start to notice the difference. It is a big difference the larger the TV.

All of this "a little better" stuff is crap. Either A you are trying to make yourself feel better you don't have HD, or B your eyes are not in 20/20 because the difference is huge. I have a 32" in 1080P rez and anytime I see a 360 or Wii game on a tube it is no comparison. So much is lost and I feel sorry that they don't know what they are missing. HD makes text readable, the guide and dashboard look crisp and sophisticated, and games have not only much more detail and clarity, but a stable, still look and much more depth. Don't just go SD to HD, try getting used to HD and go back if you disagree.

I'm gonna go ahead and use Plato's"The Allegory of the Cave" to describe HDTVs. Before I bought an HDTV, I was stuck in the cave, only seeing shadows of real images. HDTV allowed me to see the real images, and it was bright at first, but I was enlightened. I tried to tell the others stuck in the cave of SDTV my new discovery but they did not believe me. HDTV showed me the light.

Yes it is nicer but it is nothing huge. There is no monster change going from SD to HDEltroz

Then you have a horrible HDTV or HD monitor, cuz the difference for me is tremendous.

I played resistance on SD, a few months later I played it in HD and noticed things i've never seen before, and Rainbow Six is literally unplayable in SD because of how blurry it is, atleqast for my tv. HD makes a world of difference and is worth every penny imo.

Well, I own a SDTV and on several occasions I have played games on some friends HDTV's and I can say I honestly don't notice much of a difference. At least not big enough to make me go out and buy a HDTV right now.

For someone gaming on PCs and consoles for a long time, i'm not caught up in the HD hullabaloo/hype. It's fact that picture quality is crisper, sharper with more detail, but imo, the price of HDTV is only justified if it's to be used for watching movies, using HTPCs, displaying photos in parties for friends and family - on top of gaming. In terms of gaming, i believe it doesn't make too much of a difference, rather it's the games themselves which makes the real difference. I could play CSS on 'SD' res and 'HD' res - same game - there's not too much of a difference in terms of gameplay.

The difference is huge especialy when you are 40" and up!!! SDTV looks so ugly to me because I'm usd to HDTV. I have a 52" 1080p Sony Bravia and it's the best TV I ever owned. Now after playing my PS3 on that I went back to my parents' house to visit my sister and she has a 30" SDTV with a PS2 and I have to say that it's very ugly!!

So there are huge differences!!! HDTV's are getting cheaper by each month!! Soon everyone can afford one!! I suggest to everyone to go and get one!!!

PS: Don't live in the past!! Look forward to the future!!! HD gaming is the future!

HD games look amazing, there's no comparison. I'm personally about to (I need to hook it up,lol)play on a 120"screen via my720PHi-Def projector (BenQ W500!). The only thing bad about HD games and content is that I always want the viewing area to be bigger, hence myself ordering a Hi-Def projector.
