Poll How much would you spend for a gaming console at most? (78 votes)

100$ 3%
200$ 5%
300$ 14%
400$ 27%
500$ 22%
600$ 9%
700$ 3%
800$ 3%
800$+ 15%

So we all know the 7th generaiton of consoles were relatively speaking much more powerful than the current 8th gen. Problem was they were much more expensive and Microsoft and Sony still sold them at a loss.

Made me wonder, how much would you be willing to dish out for a more powerful console?

I guess I could be crazy enough to spend 700-800$ on a gaming console if it meant itd be crazy powerful. Got a well paying job, still a student and got no major payments aside from my car.

i don't think ~$750 on a console would be a good deal with any of the current hardware available. it just can not do all the other number of things a computer can for that same price while still playing games with decent resolution, framerate, and effects. for ~$900 you can get a laptop with much better hardware than the current consoles and it still comes with all the features a computer provides.

if i could get xbox1 or ps4 for maybe a little under $200 i'd probably end up with one, if not both of them. they just don't provide enough features or options for me at their current price when i already have a computer with very nice gaming options.

Well I spent just about $500 on my first PS3, and the same on my X1 so I guess that's the number.

I'd say about $600, but it would really have to impress me to not have the same functions as a PC or laptop at that point.

$500 minimum. $600+ would be ideal. Anything less you get shitty weak hardware that's majorly outdated by launch, like this gen.

$400 on just the console is my limit, did the 60GB launch PS3 last gen and regret it immensely, last time. Got my Xbox 360 for $400 last gen, the one with the 20GB HDD. My XBO was only $330 last Christmas, my Wii U about $300.

Of course, this is just the console we're talking about, there's tons more costs when getting one, such as games, depending on the console, what games are available, my budget, costs could go up considerably before leaving the store with my new console.

$300 is the most i will ever pay, ive never paid more then that on a gaming console. Now a PC on the other hand, i would pay $500-700 for a complete custom set up.

I agree with this comment.

I would have easily paid $600 for a console with a 3 Teraflop GPU, 16 gigs of RAM and a real CPU. Inflation has caught up to console HW and $400 gets you garbage. The Extra $200 would make a huge difference in capabilities and the HW would eventually drop to $400 in 3 years anyway.

400 is my limit, and that's including tax. I better be getting a 2nd controller and atleast one game bundled too

(I only buy a console when I get a great deal)

I spent $400 on the XB360 (4 months after launch) and swore I would NEVER do it again... ... ...then I spent $400 on the PS4 and realize, maybe $400 ain't that expensive.. :P

so I guess $400 is my absolute ceiling for a console. especially after getting a gaming PC this gen.

With games being so expensive, peripherals being so expensive and having to pay to play online I don't think I would pay more than 299 for PS4 or Xbox ONE. Preferably with one game included.

I would actually pay more for WiiU, truly I would, as the games cost around 40-50, no premium to play online, ...

No console is worth more than $300. I might make an exception if there are loads and loads of excellent exclusives that I like. But, that hasn't happened (yet) either.

I would have gladly payed $500 for gen 8 consoles. That way they could have put another $100 into the APUs and they could have been true-blue 1080p capable machines. Both of them should have 2.5 tflops GPUs and 12 core CPUs instead of 8. Or if they stuck with 8 CPU cores it should have been better ones. And adding that power might also necessitate a faster memory bus. They absolutely could have done that at a $500 price point.

The cost of the consoles isn't what's stopped me buying any this gen, I happily pay £500+ on a new GPU alone. It's the shear lack of value for that money that's stopped me. They're weak spec'd and out dated before launch and there are a mere handful of games, not available on PC, across all of them that I'd like to play and even then those games are £50 to £60 each (I normally pay around £25, on average, for new games), then add the online paywall.

Just not worth it for dust collectors

Depends on the system. Price is not really an issue. If I feel it's worth it I would pay more than $800 for a console just like I would pay more than $3000 for a PC as soon as I find a giant curved monitor to my liking.

$600 but it would have to be some seriously convincing shit right there. If not then I put my limit at 400, which I'd be willing to pay for a PS4 if the exclusive lineup finally convinced me enough to get one. For over $600 bucks I'd rather just upgrade my PC and forgo those console exclusives.

$400, but only if there was a good number of games I'd buy alongside it. This is why I'll be waiting a while before I make a purchase.

These days, 400... maybe 450 if it was some sort of bundle. I'm generally a sucker for buying consoles at launch and then regretting it when they get a price drop after a few months or get a bundle. I'm worried I'm going to buy the NX right at launch with nothing and then 6 months later it'll get a bundle or price drop. I'm just such a huge Nintendo fan that I feel like I need it immediately.

it really depends on what is in the box and what value it offers.

i probably would have paid more for the wii at launch (probably 300 rather than 250) because it was exciting (and going by the crazy prices people were paying in the first few years..nintendo probably under charged).

but i would never have paid 600 for a PS3...never. for an 800 (to manufacture) console to manufacture it was awful...truly awful.

if the PS3 offered the absolute best version of the multiplats and had cracking exclusives that left the 360 and wii in the dust..then yeah....600 could be on the table. but it didnt. so unless you cared about blu-ray or teh cell the 360 offered better value for money for a traditional console.

using a combination of deals i only paid 50 quid for the wiiu hardware itself. its unique characteristics werent that interesting and the console itself is not great.

so what im willing to pay is based on what is offered, not just in terms of horsepower, but in terms of content and gaming features too.

i mean if nintendos next console comes with a good VR headset, is powerful enough to render something like those UE4 demos and can do it all at 120FPS (to offer the best VR experience...no shortcuts or faking it) and a new metroid prime was a launch title....id probably chuck down more than 600 quid to be honest. im excited about VR and metroid prime would be a perfect game for it.

but for someone who has no interest in VR that probably wouldnt be a seller at 600 or 700 quid.

Don't see the point in buying anything over 400. At that point, I'd just get a 750 Ti or a GTX 960 and start building a 1080p PC.

As much as a gaming PC so upwards of $1500, heck money is never a problem as long as 50% of the cost does not go into Kinect or other useless features. People who can't afford an expensive console should work more, save up and maybe skip a few night outs, the more you invest in the hardware the more return you gain.

$300 at most.

I can justify spending more on a gaming PC because it does more than a console, but I don't feel it necessary to spend more than $300 on something designed for the sole purpose of playing games.

I am of a similar mindset. My max would be about $300 maybe a bit more with tax. I bought a second gen XBox 360 (non-RROD model) about 1 year after launch for $300 on Black Friday. I pretty much bought it just to play the original ME and AC and I was more than happy with the amount of games I played in the first year or so. I bought a second one 3 years ago for $150 after my first one finally died, and again, I have probably played about 15 games on the new one, which is completely worth it for me.

Current gen? They are not even close to being worth it 2 years after launch. Both of them have only a couple exclusives that are actually worth playing and neither of them has a "killer app" that I would consider a console seller. I was going to buy a Halo 5 bundle in Nov, but with no split-screen I'll probably just take the money I would have spent and buy a new $300 GPU and a SteamLink. Hell, even the next year or so there aren't any really console seller games coming out, so we could be 3 years after launch and there still wouldn't be enough good exclusives on either console for me to justify a $300 price tag.

I don't really now. If the price could be justified, then i'm sue I would spend the money. Hell, I bought a PS3 at launch, and that price was hardly justified.

I voted $500, but in truth I would be willing to spend at most $450. (What I ass-umed the PS4 would cost before the official unveiling)

Consoles are meant to be a cheaper alternative to gaming PC's. If they ever go over the $500 pricepoint I would wait for a price drop.

£250 if it had a couple of games I wanted for about £25 each.

So £300 with 2 games I want (not 2 games I don't).

I got my PS4 for just under £200, So I'm happy with that, although I'm waiting for games.

If it were an old school console, with some form of cartridges and games had to be complete and working out of the box, but with modern technology, i'd pay Neo Geo esque prices, or more.

Realistically? $400.

$350 including any online fees.
If the fees mean free random games that might be good, then $450.
If they have a smart idea that gets me really hyped, and I get swiped up in the launch day hype, add $100-$150 to it.

It would need to have at least 5 great exclusives in its lifecycle (not just good games but games that you miss out on for reals) to get me interested at all.
Imo the PS4/XB1 are not there yet, and, for me, probably never will get there.

I said $200 because I am happy with the Wii U. Why pay extra hundreds next gen for more power when developers were not able to make many 1080p/60fps games for consoles for the last 10 years, or the consoles will be weaker than new PCs within months after release? It takes so long to make HD games, why not just focus on making more games for familiar reliable hardware?

I'd pay $600, but in reality I'd wait for a price drop and keep playing pc and handheld while I wait for that. At 600 they could have a lot better hardware inside.
