I was just glancing at ol' man Gerstmann's review of the game and he said that the game itself - excluding cutscenes etc - can be completed in three hours.

Is that really true?! I know a lot of you yahoos hold this game in high esteem, but if this is true its rather ironic given how much people complain about the length of MW1/2 (including MP).

The review sucks. Basically he says if you know how to you can beat it in a few hours. Well no **** it's like that with any game.

Not really. Some games simply have too much mandatory content in them.

Although I'm a HUGE MGS fan what he is saying is not like every other game. If you are seriously skilled and skip the cut scenes you can probably beat MGS1 in 2 hours and a half. That is NOT the same as other games which even if you know what you're doing it'll still take about 4-5 hours.

yea...all MGS games can be completed in a short amount of time...just depends on skill

you'd be surprised how fast people can run through games...even RPG's like FF games

I don't know if that's true or not (haven't played the original MGS in a long time) but I do know that MGS games are pretty damn short minus the cutscenes.

I don't think there's anything wrong with short games though. A well-paced short game is better than a tedious long game that's length is "padded".

That being said, I do think that MGS games could benefit hugelyfrom cutting some of the cutscenes and replacing them with more gameplay segments.

But thats the point. If your seriously skilled, which everyone isn't. What I'm trying to say is if you're good at it obviously it will take less time to complete it.

I remember thinking that Gersty played the game on easy back then. It's possible he played normal.

As far as speedruns, you can do some pretty impressive stuff with ANY game once you know the game, including MGS1.

It's definitely a weak review imo, and Gerst wasn't a fan of the lil' Playstation game Metal Gear Solid it seemed at the time. I don't blame him. Metal Gear Solid is an incredible AAA, 94/100 on Metacritic, however MGS1 only scored AA here. :| It actually was the lowest review for Metal Gear Solid for a bit, now it's the second lowest review for Metal Gear Solid. The funny thing is I remember looking for the lowest review and it was done by a guy named Jason Purdy. I wonder where that guy ended up.

This stuff happens, but he did like the game, he just didn't love it, like so many other fans and critics.

What are basing your statement about him not being a fan of the lil' PlayStation?

well sometimes reviewers can get a bit overwhelmed with having to review so many games...he might have just not explored as much as we all did our first time through

Also, why do you think it was a weak review? Can you point to any lines in the review that didn't wash? I'm not saying it absolutely wasn't a weak review, but an explanation of why would be nice.

i know, which he's totally not because he hates the wii

so if he hated the PS1, then he liked the N64, which means he likes nintendo

but fanboys says he hates the wii...so he hates nintendo...which means he likes sony?

AAAHHHH, i'm so confused

I was just joshin' around, to be honest, I didn't think anyone would read it. It was tl;dr material.:P

Besides, can either of us prove otherwise? Not really, so there is no point in rehashing the N64 Vs. PSOne war...but the lines were drawn back then too.:P

I also forgot he has many, many fans.:P It's a shame what happened with the Pre-Giantbomb stuff.

Well.. not to defend his statement exactly -i didn't come to gamespot until after n64/ps1 were replaced by the ps2/gc so i don't know how Jeff was back then

Gerstmann could have loved nintendo back in the n64 days but hate nintendo in the wii/ds days. Aren't there a ton of people on these forums that claim they are in that exact same situation?

Anyways, MGS1 isquite short, Jeff is very right about that. A first playthrough could take you 8 hrs or less including all of the cutscenes.

the difference is that it takes skill to beat MGS1 quickly (if you do it without using stealth camo - same goes for MGS4)

it doesn't take skill to beat a game like MW2 quickly, and on top of that you have to want to beat an MGS game quickly by skipping cutscenes, whereas you don't have to want to beat a game like MW2 quickly or even skip cutscenes to still beat it quickly

Thank god for the limited gameplay in MGS. If it weren't for its character depth and compelling multi-layered plot , it would be a very average franchise.

lol, ofcourse when you play a game over again, knowing exactly where to go and what to do its going to be completed faster. I dont get the point of this thread. First play through for most people is easily over 8 hours, comparing MGS to COD is foolishness. One game pioneered a genre and has one of the best stories, characters, gawd people MGS is legendary.

Mario 2 can be completed in 35 minutes.

Sonic 2 in 30 minutes.

Mario 64 in 1 hour.

SPEED RUNS MEANS NOTHING.

I beat it in 5 hours or less my first playthrough, taking my time and whatnot (Last summer BTW) it is a short game, if anybody took more than 8 hours to beat it they are BSing. Or left it on while they walked their dog or something.

8 hours? C'mon now, you best be kidding. It is a short game, stop trying to make it seem like it lasts longer than it actually does, 6-8 hours tops.

Yeah if you are trying to get through the game fast i.e. get Big Boss rank, it can be done pretty quick. I think the minimum for BB was 3 hours or less, not too hard to do it under 2 and a half to be honest, can't remember what my time was when I got it though.

I completed MGS1 but when it was released, so I don't really remember how long did it take for me...I didn't play the subsequent ones, but my female friend has beaten MGS2 in about 2 and half hours (excluding cut-scenes), so go figure...
