Japan has consistently shown that it is a much smaller market than both Europe and America, so in terms of gross sales I highly doubt that Japan is absolutely necessary to claim top spot (though what top spot is, exactly, remains unclear. Profit? Sales? Userbase?). Most of today's best developers/publishers are actually Western, so the need to capture Japanese developers is not as drastic as it previously has been, though to not have support from Capcom, Konami, or Square-Enix would be quite a loss.
I think the winner of this console war will be the one who can continually keep their audience at the helm of their console, constantly playing, interacting, and utilizing its features effectively. Right now, the 360 seems to be the winner, but its lack of absolutely earth-shattering titles is worrisome. The PS3 seems poised to do that kind of stuff, but in the meantime the audience is still waiting around. And the Wii crowd is stuck playing with their own family members and neighborhoods, plus a bunch of rather simplistic games that don't exactly boast excellence. Still, the Wii may manage to carry itself due to huge profitability, strong 1st party talent, and ground-breaking gameplay elements. I still think game developers need to be willing to take risks on game ideas rather than spew out the same things year after year after year. Without content, the industry goes nowhere.
The 360 would sell in Japan if it was made by a Japanese company.
Doesn't matter though, MS and Nintendo will be the big winners this generation.

[QUOTE="CarlosPontinas"]It has already won the war. iwo4lifeYou sound like W on board an aircraft carrier a couple of years ago. I laughed pretty hard at that. MS should announce a price-drop as soon as possible to boost sales.
[QUOTE="hyruledweller"]Thats why the 360 wont win, japan is a big market, look at DS.-Beowulf
To me PC has always won the war but besides that Xbox 360 has won the war thats the way I look at it.jamesgj

Agree, xbox 360 has some great games right now and in the future but if those games were coming out to PC I would buy that version 360 is my choice of system currently.
It's simple really win japan !!!
As a 360 owner it bothers me that the 360 is flopping in japan and they don't seem to care. Japan is a major market as sony has sold over 20 million there. Plus the killer apps for the ps3 come from where?? = Japan !!!
However the 360 or should I say ms seems to just not get what japanese gamers want. What do they want ??? = Rpg's
Now if I was trying to win the next gen was I would make sure that square/enix brought FF13 or Dragon Quest to my console. That alone would increase 360 sales in japan for sure. What other games do japanese gamers like = fighting games. To that end I again would make sure that soul caliber 4 was coming to the 360. In my mind these two games companies (Square/Namco) would have a domino affect on the 360, bring more japanese dev support because sales in japan would increase. More japanese dev support means less killer apps for sony and nintendo.
Sony and to a lesser degree nintendo greatly depend on japanese 3rd part support to capture market share ie profits. Sure the 360 is selling in the usa and europe but you can't win the war without japan imo. The wii and ps3 are sellingg at a far faster rate than 360 during the same launch time frame because the selling japan also. Sure the 360 is doing well with sales right now but ms had the next gen market all to themselves and just passed 11 million after 1 1/2 years. The ps3 cost 200 bucks more and at the current sales rate (I think it will go up because europe is not included yet) they could pass the 360 by 2008 at the latest.
MS needs to open it's eyes and again I am sure ms will counter with a price drop to hold off the ps3 but the wii is still going to kill them. I laughed at the wii but I can't laugh anymore. The wii could win the next gen war with it's crappy graphics and gimmickyrealize japan is the key to world domination on consoles. What say you should ms give square a major discount or some cash to win ???
Do you care that if the 360 flops by 2009 ms might kill the 360 like they did with the xbox ???

its not that simple. Japan is about half the population of the US. Ps2 sold 40mill in US and about 20mill in japan plus 40mill in remaining areas. Ps2 wins because it sold well around the world! xbox only sells in US 15/25mill xbox sold were in US.
