No, only this guy can save PC Gaming, not that it needs saving. But he will save it anyway.

Yeah.... how's that development on Duke Nuken Forever coming along? I really doubt Yet Another FPS on PC™ would reinvigorate the platform. Times have sure changed though. If my memory serves me, this website used to cover PC gaming exclusively.
So what do I think would save PCs as you surely have not asked yourself!?
1) New mech game - I don't care if it's mech warrior, starsiege, heavy gear, etc. Really any cutting edge game that isn't FPS would do worlds of good.
2) Adventure games - what happened to these?
3) Space Combat - I have always loved space combat games. Wing Commander, X-wing, Freespace, privateer, etc. I can't believe how long it's been since a decent space combat game has been released by a US developer.

PC Gaming is the only place you'll still find these, except maybe the Wii.

Adventure games are making a neat revival this year on PC. Check AdrianWerner's thread in the PC games forum.
Oh and PC gaming hardly needs saving.

I suppose I should have said "save". PC gaming certainly won't die as there will always be a large install base. I do feel like I was a much more satisfied PC gamer 8 years ago than I am today.
the big issues are piracy and lack of a voice. in terms of everything else its absolutely brilliant.
on the piracy front...well ive alreat talked loads about that in other threads.
on the voice front...this is where the PCGA becomes very important. the consoles all have a big company backing them and focused on promoting them but the PC doesent. it has 100s of companies kicking the crap out of each other to bring the best hardware to the customer (its one of the things that makes PCs so cool)...but none of them are really toting the PC as a gaming platform. they back their own products of course...but thats not really enough. there needs to be one voice and one message in front of all this...telling ppl about the PC and its strengths as a gaming platform. hopefully the PCGA will take on that role.
a more minor note is the PC would really benefit from a first party. at the mo it basically has no first party but getting one would be helpful.
Wait a minute, I thought Duke Nukem Forever was also coming to consoles...NielsNL
It doesn't matter in the end. The PC version will be far superior. Better graphics, better controls, free online, and MODS. Forget the console versions even exist.
Couldn't in game advertising be a good thing for PC gaming? If a game is downloaded it only means more people see the advertising and theoretically that way the advertising income shold also be higher. NielsNL
thats one thing some publishers are having a very good look at. EA are going to give funding a game through advertising a shot with battlefield heros. the games free....there is optional stuff u can buy and adds will be shown at loading screens from what i hear. free game...so im not complaining and i think its a very interesting business model. dave perry was talking about taking that a step further even with an MMO. completly free but advertisers can give u stuff for free...but its branded. so u might get a sword thats called something like "Coke long sword of death +1" or something. the game would also support more passive advertisement.
not bad ideas really. the only down side is that the advertising could kill the immersive experience of a game (a pepsi add in oblivion say....disaster) and the game might be more controlled by the advertisers then the developers (though games development is mostly controlled by phil from marketing anyway...so same difference).
however i certainly wouldnt have a problem with a free multiplayer game backed by advertising.

If you cannot max it, you can set the detail and resolution to low (it will still look better than Haze graphics which runs at 576p resolution). Oh, and there are many advantages of PC gaming apart from graphics. Great controls, great online, and mods. I think mods are like 500 advantages in one. Check out how many Oblivion mods there are, and try to tell me you still prefer the console versions over the PC version :)

I don't care about mods. I have more than enough games to play on multiple systems. And a lot of people don't feel like messing around with resolutions just to get the game running at a decent framerate.I have a pretty powerful PC and I like the idea of just putting in a game and playing it without having to deal with all the other mess. I think a lot of people here that are alway trumpeting the PC as the best platform forget that. I'm not saying that it is or isn't, it's just that there are many people who just want to play games and not configure them.
it will be a while before pc gaming is even remotely threatened by console gaming
look at the massive starcraft audience in south korea for instance. you think the conformity of a console would ever take hold in that type of audience?
he is coming to consoles as wellmingo123not exactly... 3D Realms said that they PLAN on bring DNF to consoles whenever it gets release but right now they are only focused on finishing the PC version. The console versions will probably follow not too long after, but then again they may not.

Mods are a HUGE advantage for PC. Have fun paying for extra content on consoles.
Why are you acting like customization is a bad thing? I hear this crap all the time from consolites like you. They act like it takes weeks to get the settings right so a game is playable. Total BS.
Customization is another ADVANTAGE of the PC, not a hinderance. With console games if you're pretty much stuck with the way it plays out of the box, with PC games if you want something changed, chances are it can be done. Again, that's an advantage, not a disadvantage.
I also like saving at least $20 per game.
Why does it need to be saved? They're happy with what they get, and we console players are happy with what we get. Still, it'd be nice to see 3DR put up or shut up after 10 years of smack talk.
Because it absolves the developer of the responsibility to get things right - they wave their hands and say "lower your settings" or "get an updated driver that Nvidia has hacked... er, I mean optimized for our game" or "buy better hardware". If Crytek had to develop for a fixed platform, then they wouldn't have been able to achieve what they did - I'll acknowledge that - but they wouldn't have been able to ignore the game's performance, either. Console developers are responsible for carefully controlling the layout of their levels and objects to consistently hit a target framerate, or you'd better believe they'll be slammed for it in the review.Customization is another ADVANTAGE of the PC, not a hinderance. Sure, you don't get to choose the balance of resolution, AA, and settings you want. But you don't have to, because the people who made the game have already done that work for you. And that's the way I like it.

The 3 genres you listed are very niche. Sins did sell pretty well though but it didn't "save" PC gaming, not that it's really dying.
PCgaming is growing double digits each year. It's more profitable than ever and there are more PCgamers than ever before.
I don't see how it needs saving

I don't see how you can claim they ignored the games performance really, I mean 30fps, lowered res and no AA is pretty much a console standard yet when a PC game has to be played this way it's alll of a sudden a sign of lazy devs.
It will be be multiplat, although the PC version will be cheaper, have better graphics, and have more content(free) than consoles. So basically the PC will save itself even if there are not any PC exclusives.Sooperhotzhiz
why would there be no PC exclusives? If anything there will be more than ever before

I played the beginning of Crysis on my old PC (a bit better than minimum requirements), before I upgraded, and it was only acceptable at minimum settings, 800x600 (a little more than half the pixels of 720p). On my upgraded PC (E6750, and a very disappointing 8800 GT), it's quite a bit better (1280x1024, mix of Medium and High settings) but still not up to the solid 30 fps I'm used to on consoles.
If they had been honest with themselves, established a hardware target, and said "the game has to run 30 fps rock-solid start to finish on this PC, or we don't ship", then performance would have been a lot less choppy. That's an unreasonable demand on a PC, but it's expected on a console. The only people who seem to get away with breaking it are Rockstar.

you don't even know how rediculously crazy the tech in CryENGINE 2 is do you?
I am a programmer and I will tell you RIGHT NOW that the fact that the game even runs at 30 FPS is a miracle because there is so much power being eaten by the game, even on low settings.
Also, something is wrong on YOUR end if you can't get 40+ FPS on High settings with your supposed rig.
Because my work computer which is a E6600, 8800 GTS 640 MB, 3GB of RAM can pull 40 FPS on High settings... Heck, it pulls 25 FPS on Very High settings with that resolution
I'll admit, I haven't put a lot of effort into solving that particular problem. The new official Nvidia drivers helped a LOT - I can set more stuff to High and pull 30 fps avg., without the weird sleep problem I had with the betas. In the end, though, I have plenty of other games that run just fine, and Crysis just isn't worth the effort to me - it was okay, but I don't feel like replaying it.Also, something is wrong on YOUR end if you can't get 40+ FPS on High settings with your supposed rig.
