http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/177336/How_will_Microsoft_and_Sony_respond_to_the_Wii_U_launch.php

How will Microsoft and Sony respond to the Wii U launch?

The upcoming Wii U price won't simply determine the console's own future, says Gamasutra analyst Matt Matthews.

Along with a Wii U launch date and details on hardware configurations, I will be watching news from the Nintendo press event this week to find out the official launch price for the new system. If the base model launches above $300 in the U.S., Nintendo's role in the console market will be at significant risk. On the other hand, at $250 the system could be extremely compelling to mainstream consumers.

But the Wii U price won't simply determine its own future. Once that price has been announced, it will have immediate and irrevocable effects on how consumers view the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Much of the current malaise in the U.S. video game market can be blamed directly on the stubbornly high prices of those two leading systems. The Xbox 360 hasn't seen a proper price cut since September 2008, when the base model was reduced to $200. The entry level PlayStation 3 model was cut to $300 back in August 2010 and to $250 in August 2011 but has now gone for over a year with no further reduction.

That puts the base Xbox 360 at 54 percent more expensive and the base PS3 at 92 percent more expensive than the PlayStation 2 at a comparable point in its lifetime.

When Nintendo plays its big card this week, we can expect Microsoft and Sony to relent and begin competing on price again.

Advantage: Microsoft

Microsoft has the advantage, since it began laying the groundwork earlier this year for a service-subsidized hardware program: $100 for an Xbox 360 4GB system with Kinect, after agreeing to a two-year, $15 per month Xbox Live Gold membership. Initially available only at Microsoft stores, the program has expanded to select Best Buy and GameStop locations.

Is the program working? Until Microsoft or one of its retail partners gives an indication, we can't really know. However, The NPD Group, which tracks video game sales across retail and online segments, did provide indirect information which is at the least suggestive.

According to NPD Group data provided to me, the Xbox 360 sold for an average $258 in August 2012. That's the lowest average I've seen for any month so far this year, the fourth successive monthly decrease, and is within $2 of the average right before the November 2010 launch of Kinect.

xbox360.jpgI suspect we're seeing several effects here. The market is generally weak in 2012 and is often seasonally weak in August. On top of that, the number of consumers willing to spend $300 on a 2005-era console with a 2010-era add-on is shrinking every day. Somewhere in there, the $100 system with service is probably also driving down the average price, but I doubt it is the only or even the main factor.

However, if Microsoft and other big-box stores like Wal-mart can work out the credit check details required for this kind of service plan, I expect consumers to respond very positively. In that case, I don't see Microsoft making dramatic cuts in its hardware prices.

In correspondence with Michael Pachter, industry analyst for Wedbush Securities, he suggested that a $300 Wii U bundled with a game would push Microsoft to respond with a $250 Xbox 360 4GB bundle with Kinect and a game. That sounds about right to me, but the optics for such a bundle are less clear to me if the Wii U has a bare-bones model at $250 without a game.

Sony: At Least Fifty

Sony's situation is a bit more straightforward, since their entry-level system is still at $250. Even if the Wii U starts at $300, that's too close. The main thing Sony will need to do is drop the entry-level system to $200.

The other thing Sony has often done is pack software and accessories into a bundle to increase its perceived value. In other times, that might have helped some, but I think this is the wrong time for that approach. For example, if it were to try to bundle its PlayStation Move add-on with every system while keeping hardware prices at their current levels, I'm fairly certain consumers would be uninterested. What Sony needs is as big a gap as it can afford between the Wii U and the PS3, and the bundling won't really help.

Prior to the last price cut (from $300 to $250 in August 2011), the average price for the system was $312, and that average immediately dropped $40 the next month to around $272, where it has remained with some slight variations. According to official NPD Group data, the average price of the PS3 during August 2012 was $266, which is the second lowest it has been all year.

If the price gets cut to $200, and all models get a comparable $50 cut, then I think we can expect the average price to drop by at least another $40, to around $220. I think it's possible that at that level it could grab some consumer interest, as happened with the drop to $300 with the introduction of the original PlayStation 3 Slim.

ps3.jpgWedbush's Michael Pachter agreed with my assessment that Sony will be forced to move, but had his own angle: Sony will be forced not only by Nintendo's Wii U pricing, but also by Microsoft's. If his prediction of a $250 Xbox 360 4GB with Kinect comes to fruition, then Sony will have no choice but to cut to $200. That's spot on, and Pachter's observation brings into sharp focus for me just how much Sony's position in this industry has changed.

Remember, it was Sony which relentlessly cut its original PlayStation prices and forced Sega into price cuts it could ill afford back in the late 1990s. It was Sony who used its one year head start over the competition to cut its PlayStation 2 prices in early 2002, forcing Microsoft into an uncomfortable situation as it could not bring down the original Xbox hard drive and GPU prices quickly enough.

Now as a new generation begins, it is Sony that is forced to cut prices as it endures the consequences of a $600 console launch nearly six years ago.

Nintendo: Wii at $100, Wii U at $300

Finally, Nintendo will have to clear the deck of Wii stock as it makes way for the Wii U, and that means that there should actually be two price announcements coming up. The Wii U will get an official first price, and the Wii will likely get its final price.

Going into the holiday, Nintendo can clear out its old stock of Wii systems by cutting the systems that are currently $150 down to $100. The conventional wisdom is that the $100 Wii did exceedingly well last holiday as a Wal-mart exclusive, and I don't see any reason they can't clear the shelves by making that an official price for all remaining systems.

That cut would be a real cut, by the way, since the Nintendo Wii is selling for an average of $147 now, according to official NPD Group data from August. Because the company has so few options on system pricing, the average would likely drop to under $100 immediately.

That would give Nintendo plenty of space between its legacy system and the new Wii U. I expect Nintendo to follow Microsoft's and Sony's leads into offering a range of systems at different prices. A $250 model would be cutting the margin close, perhaps too close for Nintendo who is still smarting from the forced Nintendo 3DS price cut a year ago. If such a system is offered, I expect it to be like the original 20GB PlayStation 3: absolutely no frills and limited stock.

The main Wii U model will most likely be $300, possibly with a game packed in. Ideally, Nintendo should offer a model with a voucher to download a game, because this would help jumpstart consumer interest in the company's online offerings. It would also have the benefit of cutting costs for Nintendo, but it isn't clear to me yet whether Nintendo is ready to step that boldly into the online arena.

Once Nintendo has announced its intentions later this week, I'll have a column on the official prices along with some more data.

advatage microsoft indeed, unfortunately advatange M$ =/= advatage gamer but rather the opposite..:| If all of the terrible depressing rumors about the720 and PS$ are true I will be waiting until the PS4 and 720 come out and the Wii U gets a price drop then buy a Wii U.

Errr...Nintendo competing with 6 year old consoles? I don't think MS or Sony will be too worried. Especially since the Wii-U is gonna have ports of their games. Nintendo needs to be worried though, when MS and Sony decide to reveal their new consoles. As a Nintendo fan, I'm very skeptical about the Wii U

A price drop for PS3 or 360 won't stop those who want to buy Wii U from buying it. People will buy it anyway provided Nintendo don't screw up the price again.

I love how people write off Nintendo like they aren't much competition. The general public doesn't give 2 shiits whether or not the WiiU is the same power as an Xbox or Playstation. When people actually get their hands on that tablet controller in stores, they will sell. MS and Sony should both be 199 when WiiU releases if they really wanna pressure Nintendo.

I thought this was about their 8th gen response, not current gen consoles...

I don't think Wii U will be directly competing against PS360.

It's not like a person walks in to a store thinking about picking up a gaming console, then deciding between 360 or PS3 or Wii U. No. Launch buyers are the ones who go to the store with the intention of buying a Wii U -- hence they're not in direct competition.

They will claim that everything it does is nothing more than a gimmick and then copy it a couple of years down the line.

I think they'll respond by not caring about a console just over their power being released.

I think the Wii U will flop - at least as far as living up to the Wii. Everyone I know who bought a Wii did so because it was a gimmick. None of them play it anymore, and I can't see any of them buying a Wii U. The market could not be indicative of my circle of acquaintances, though.

agreed 100%. The other 2 must drop prices to offset the new console appeal Nintendo will have. Average consumers aren't savvy about graphics and Nintendo has a famous and strong stable of games that people like. Being cheaper, considerably cheaper is MS and Sony's best answer.

People can pretend the Wii U is a joke that won't sell all they want, but they do that at their own risk. Many fanboys and critics said the same thing about the Wii when it launched. "The System is too weak, nobody will buy it!" was a common theme and look what happened in the end. The Wii is the best selling console this generation, is the best selling Nintendo home console of all time, and is the third best selling home console of all time behind the PS2 and PS1. And while the Wii has its faults, the simple fact is that Nintendo is a master at marketing their systems to consumers. The Wii despite having power that was barely above the Xbox dominated the sales charts for the first couple of years, and was the hottest system on the market at that time.

If the Wii U can launch at the price point of 200-250, they could make a killing this holiday season. Contrary to what fanboys say, the tablet will sell the system. Remember, people dismissed the Wiimote and motion controls and look what happened. Casual gamers embraced the Wiimote and even some hardcore gamers jumped in to try it out. Having a Tablet Screen on a system will draw in consumers, and might even allow the Wii U to get covered by mainstream media.

People seem to forget that not everyone comes to forums like this and visits sites like IGN and Gamespot. Some consumers are parents buying a system for their children, and once they see New Super Mario Brothers Wii U, the tablet controllers, and a price point that is comparable to the 360 or PS3 then they are sold. Not to mention the average consumer that does not nessicarly know much about the hardware, but do play video games are likely to be impressed by the tablet. These consumers are the ones that made the Wii such a huge success despite the massive gaps in power.

Fanboys can laugh at the Wii U all they want, but let's be honest here. Microsoft and Sony's executives are not sitting around in their offices saying "Oh, it's just Nintendo. Who gives a f***?" They are more likely saying "Oh, that's Nintendo's new system? What can we do to avoid being lost in the shuffle this holiday system?" At the end of the day, this is a business and Sony and Microsoft have everything to lose by not caring about what Nintendo does.

All of the odds are in Nintendo's favor. People are looking for the next big thing, Nintendo has the franchises that are exclusive and are proven system sellers, they have a unquie controller that will appeal to many people, and there is nothing more then a slight hint of Microsoft and Sony's next consoles. And this last point is important. In the past, companies were famous for hyping the next generation of systems a few years in advance during the lifespan of their current system. Sony killed the Dreamcast with the PS2 hype for about a year before the system ever launched, and we were already seeing the PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii as early as 2004.

But this time is different. Microsoft and Sony have been quiet about their next-gen systems, and only time will tell if this was a massive mistake on their part. But one thing this has done is allow Nintendo to promote the Wii U without any other next-gen system stealing their thunder. And this is maybe one of the biggest things that might help the Wii U this holiday season. Casual gamers who don't follow these sites may assume Nintendo is the only one working on a next-gen system. And to be honest, this is not far from the truth. Sony and Microsoft have been very quiet about their next-gen systems.

So, people should stop dismissing the Wii U. While it does have a long-road ahead of it, let's keep in mind that Nintendo are masters of marketing their system. Add on a tablet that will attract casual consumers, exclusive games that sell units, and the fact that Sony and Microsoft have done nothing to steal Nintendo's thunder and it looks better and better for Nintendo.

Now, the big wild card is the price. If Nintendo can launch the system at 200-250 dollars, then the Wii U might be the hottest system this holiday season.

Sony answered by not releasing any major games around the Wii U launch... It seems they got scared that a new IP like LOU would suffer from the Wii U hype or something.

Now is only Halo 4 and Kinect vs the Wii U

MS will release xbox 720 in 2013 or early 2014

Will take E3 2013 by storm, stealing all WiiU thunder, with Fable 4, Alan Wake 2 as launch exclusives

.

Will reveal

.

Fable 4

Alan Wake 2

Lost Odyssey 2

Kameo 2

Gears 4

Mass Effect equivalent

Witcher 3

.

and will use some X13 show to reveal some of those earlier than E3 probably

.

As for this christmas, they have a 99$ xbox 360, stunning graphics that look better than anything on WiiU for now, Halo 4, Fable Journey and Forza Horizon, plus Gears Judgement early 2013

.

Sony has a huge lineup in 2013 as well, some of its best games yet like Ni no Kuni, Dragons Crown, Last of Us, Last Guardian, FF13vs (well :) ), GOW Ascension, Beyond etc etc

.

Both system will have a huge 2013 in their own way and frankly i see nothing at all on WiiU that would worry them either

ms has already said no price cuts this year so has sony , their not going to do anything in fact i think sonys main concern is the PSvita and ms has kenict they recently dropped the price of that thing , so maybe thats your answer ,

but regardless i dont think they can do anything the wii u is gonna launch and sell regardless of their efforts here is why

who ever wants a ps3 or 360 probably already owns one

2 this gen has gone on long enough - the sales show it to , if people are ready for the wii u there is no way some one else is going to change their mind and believe me the selling power of mario is just to big a obsticale for them to even counter! this is nintendos first HD console and i believe it is going to be a success not a wii sell athon but still a success regardless of sonys or ms's effots their main concerns is their own next gen consoles if they had the brains they would use them as a counter , but we already know they wont ,

What about that kid whos parents have decided to buy him his first game console? Most likely he'll want a ps3 or 360 since thats what his friends will have. That article seems to be forgetting that if you buy a wiiu you get a small iibrary of games all at $50-$60 price tag. While ps360 has tons of games at $20 or less.

Microsoft and Sony have been quiet about their next-gen systems, and only time will tell if this was a massive mistake on their part.>caryslan2

Your history is incorrect. 360 wasnt officially anounced until e3 2005 and launched in Nov that same year. All info on 360 prior to that were rumors just like we have now with the 720. Sony had to announce the ps 3 in 2005 as well to counter ms.

Indeed, xbox 360 was released only months after its announcement

I love how people write off Nintendo like they aren't much competition. The general public doesn't give 2 shiits whether or not the WiiU is the same power as an Xbox or Playstation. When people actually get their hands on that tablet controller in stores, they will sell. MS and Sony should both be 199 when WiiU releases if they really wanna pressure Nintendo. todd2r_Partdeux

Personally I don't think those greedy bastards at M$ will budge.

If the WiiU is $300, M$ will campaign their $200 base model as being the "cheaper" option.

If the WiiU is $250, M$ will push the $100 offer as being the "cheaper" option.

Sony has alittle more "wiggle room" IMHO, but I don't think they'll budge either. $250 for a blu-ray player, with free online, and a plethora of great software compared to a new console with too many unknowns..

The bottom line is both consoles have been on the market for 6-7+ yrs. They're both sitting at around 65+ million sold apiece. They'll most likely have between 70-75 million sold before their successors are released so they'll likely see no reason to drop prices.. greedy fvks.

I Doubt besides for marketting Microsoft will need to do much, after all their consoles has been having immense sales success they have little reason to price drop it unless. Unless ofcourse the WiiU is 300$, then they may drop their 250GB model to 250$. Sony has alot riding on this holiday they really need to be pushing the Vita, price drop or not. If the Rumored PS3 slim is real i assume they will show it off at TGS, otherwise they really need to price the drop PS3 by 50$ in order to compete with the 360.

Hopefuly they will announce their new consoles.

PAL360
this would be a huge deal. A lot of households only buy one console per gen so it is important to at least show off a little of what is coming if consumers can just wait. MS and Sony will likely wait until a major conference for a full reveal but they could still release some screen shots and hint strongly at some other selling points.

Problem with that is Sony has been getting a fiscal beating in all departments. Heck I'm surprised people kind forgot that to this date PS3 consoles are still sold at a loss and even as far back as 06 they were 3 billion in the hole and loss all. www.1up.com/news/sony-lost-ps3-ps2 Mind you I do not want Sony to fail as a competitive market means lower prices for me. ^_^ But in all seriousness Sony is actually in a fairly bad place as a company and needs to do some major overhauls(i.e. ditch the money pit that is their TV division) to stay afloat.

Sony will keep delivering a steady stream of games till they decide to release the PS4, to add to the already barn bursting of world class, high scoring excluvies already available. Thank you Sony. Heil68

After using the tablet, a regular controller feels very dated.

MS and Sony will pretend the WiiU isn't a big deal, then copy everything about it three years later.
