Halo is not the definition of "run of the mill." With every entrant into the franchise there has been MASSIVE improvements and changes. Call of Duty is more along what you are referencing, and Uncharted 2 is the opposite of what you are saying. It has an identity, that is only as unique as those it copies. It is still an excellent title, but not an original title. rolo107
Halo: CE- Nuff said
Halo 2- Online play and dual weilding
Halo 3- equipment?
lets not confuse small evolutions in a working formula with massive improvements. i will admit that Halo has tried to do more than some other shooters (picking on CoD again), but its changed little since its inseption. and Halo CE was developed to bring a previously PC dominated genre to consoles and have it work. i would call little about the games original save for the story.
IW has been milking the same teet for years and its been paying off, but lets not open that can of worms and get off topic.
i agree that there is little in the big mixing pot that can be called fresh in the delicious soup that is uncharted 2. but i defy you to find me a video game with a similer blend of cover based third person shooter and Assassins Creed esque freerunning. (single game, not a list that the series has crammed into itself)
its one of those "Greater than the sum of its parts" instances
Im not sure Halo should be taking lessons from UC2's MP when Halo 3 has about 3 times the people online, 3 years after the release. Don't get me wrong, UC2 is a superb game. But I dont think MP is its strongest aspect. And MP is really the reason Halo is such a great game, i mean the campaign is fun but MP is where the games staying power comes from. and anyways, UC2 is pretty different, Halo isnt exactly (not at all) a cover shooter. and Halo actually seems to stand out for me from other MP shooters. Games like BFBC2 (demo ofc only so far), MW2, etc etc all seem to blend in. Halo seems to standout from them in a lot of ways. The combat is a bit slower, as in it simply takes longer to kill somebody, which i think is part of the fun. You can ofc 1 hit sniper and missile launcher them or whatever, but still, if you take a basic assault rifle or battle rifle, you need to rreally lay some shots into em before their down, unlike most other shooters where hold down the trigger for the insta kill (whoever sees/aims fastest auto wins). Halo's weapons also feel a bit different, in MW2, they have like 20 different guns that are the exact same "Hold down the trigger and they die super fast", while like in halo, nearly all the guns feel truly different. There are similar ones, but not nearly on the level of other games. So I think Halo does stand out from other shooters. What other shooters have similar mechanics such as super high/floaty jumps, it takes that many shots to kill somebody, that much difference in weapons, etc.
But i imagine some similarity might leave. They are implementing sprint, which set it apart, which is good. It'll be nice to not have to feel so sluggish trying to just get from point A-point B. I do really wonder about ADS. The vast majority of shooters these days have it, Halo is probably the only major holdout on that trend (though Halo 3 aint so new anymore lol).that would affect the game quite a bit

And i'm not sure that the traffic numbers on such a mainstream title so ingrained into todays pop-culture means a whole lot. Bungie has obviously found a winning formula and planted a money tree in it. its definatly had some time to get polished up and get to the level where the weapons all feel truly different from each other (though i personaly still think more than a few of them are next to worthless and a couple interchangable)
i'm not sure what your trying to get at when you say slower combat either. i have spent countless nights with both games, and my fair share of time with the CoD games. the difference between Halo and Uncharted 2, or hell lets say gears of war isen't exponataly different to me. they start shooting me, i don't get out of the line of fire, i die. Halo might be slightly more forgiving in this fact, but the nature of the game is so different it should be expected. Halo doesen't have a "hide behind chest high wall" button.
either way, were arguing Mcintoch apples to granny smith. there both shooters, slightly different and maybe one has had more time to ripen, but at the end of the day both are compleatly different beasts. i said "the king of run of the mill" and not simply "run of the mill" because of the diamond shine the Halo series has gotten to, but i stand by the fact that its formulabeen overdone and the series needs a major overhaul and an identity of its own.
