With the PSP go it brings up the topic of are gaming companies trying to get rid of physical games in packaging and go to direct download. This would stop people from buying used games and force the consumer to purchase at full retail. I find it hard to believe, especially if the price of a digital download is the price of a hard copy of game (which doesn't make that much sense to me, since your saving the company from packaging and shipping out a hard copy) For example Bioshock is 19.99 soft or hard copy. How would you react to this. I mean if you would ask me if people would stop buying cds and go to pay to download I would of said your nuts. To me I like the physcial disc and packaging. I also am a person who saves some cash and buys used games, because well if I can get Darkness for 5-10 bucks or pay new game price that is a no brainer to me. How will you react if this happens? Some of you just might say when it happens as well!

I wouldn't mind. However the company would have to give over the rights to the game should they go under (therefore owning a digital copy).

It wouldn't make a difference to me. But there would need to be something that would ensure that I own the rights of the digital copy.

i would loose it. the internet in australia is terrible - it would take me a week to download a game. plus if i bought 2 games i would probably be over my download quota.

Depends on the Price, the PSPgo failed but look at devices like the ipod touch/phone, its cheap apps and games imo is a much better way to find games you like. As for consoles, I wouldnt be too fussed if this happened, but I would miss buying games second hand, its always great to find good games in the bargain bin and this would be something I would miss, I wouldnt like having to buy older games online even if they were half their orignal RRP.

i would hate it. i need to have my games/music/movies in a hard copy form. it makes them far more versatile than a DRM-ridden file in some folder on my PC.

I think that if they make that happen then I may see piracy as the way to go, that or leave the console wars behind and jump in the pc wagon (but still hand to hand with piracy).

I'd miss boxart and instruction manuals. Aside from that, meh. Works pretty well, and I don't have to drive to Gamestop or whatever to get a new game.

Yup..I've been mostly purchasing DD lately. Just hit 100 games on Steam during these Christmas sales.

So yeah. I'd love for games to go DD only, but it's not going to happen any time soon, as many don't have access to decent connections.

I'd much rather digitally distributed games. Less piracy, no disks to lose or scratch, and better for the environment. Problem is, there are still quite a few people without stable internet or dial up so and even more people who would think it's a hassle.

I don't get it. Why would people quit gaming just because they don't get a manual and a case with their game? It's silly.

It's not like that... but I guess having a hard copy feels waaaaaaay more satisfiying to me than just a digital copy. Makes me feel like I could've goten it some other (not necessarily legal) way lol :P

I hope that never happens, and I doubt it ever will happen. Since the PSP go hasn't been much of a success, I think it's probably safe to say that no one else will produce a download-only handheld or console.

Kinda off topic here but I'm going there anyway.

The city government of some areas of the U.S. wanted to provide a free, basic internet service to everyone, because the assumption is that the internet and its free flow of information is as important to democracy as newspapers and books. Of course, the ISPs barked and got their way. But if the government were to provide a national, satellite-based basic internet package (limited to, say, 1mbps down/128k up) then full-on DD would take off an ALL devices. Yeah it would take a long time to download something at that speed, but it's still faster than snail-mail (6-8 weeks).

Damn capitalists pigs, they won't even give people crumbs without having to make a buck.

That's an odd assumption to make, considering technology advances very quickly, it's perfectly viable to assume that internet infrastructure will improve. Therefore digitally distributed games will be the option, due to being able to decrease costs in manufacturing and shipping.

That sounds very cool. I guess another hurdle would be XBL and PSN taking advantage of the monopoly on game sales for their platform and have 100% control over the prices. That's why I like Steam. It's third party and there is a bit of competition so they have deals every once in awhile to stay ahead.

Yeah, but we know what the Republicans think about anything provided for free.

I really think the reason republicans hate 'green' policies is because they want to foul the atmosphere up so much that they can charge for air.

its a terrible idea i think. ive mentioned in other threads that i have friends who game but cant play online b/c there isnt a decent enough internet service where they live. i think in 40 or 50 years when the internet is literally everywhere, then they can start considering it.

The price of games more than make up for the cost of putting the games on discs and shipping them.

Plus it just doesn't seem fair to everyone by making a download-only platform. What about those that don't have high speed internet, or those that may have high speed, but slow download speeds/monthly download limit?

Maybe make downloading every game an option at some point, but games still need to be made on discs, because the majority of people would rather just buy a copy of the game at the store instead of dl'ing everything, I'm sure.

Look at music. Who buys CDs anymore? And with games, there wouldn't be anyway for piracy to occur with digital downloads providing it is the only source of the games

Also, the reason games on XBOX and PS3 are so big is that they are required to have anti-piracy software on the disc. That's why all 360 games are 7 gigs
