Hype, sales, reviews, and popularity are the 4 magic ingredients to telling you about a game and where it stands. If a game excells in all 4 areas, you know its a amazing game.

Hype is popularity generated by fans before release, signifying the games importance.

Sales is proof of just how popular and preferred a game really is. It shows the amount fo people that would exchange money to play the game.

Reviews, or I should say review average sites like Metacritic and Gamerankings. These are comprised of (mostly) competant reviewers who do this for a living. And above all, the average score takes all reviews into account to almost accuratly give a rough score that displays the games quality.

Popularity is the games lasting appeal online and its buzz in the real world, with internet buzz to a lesser degree.

Now for the fanboy part.

If one game like Gears 2 happens to excell over another game like Resistence 2 in all 4 areas...........what defense do you have to say Resistence 2 is a better game? Your personal opinion that magically becomes fact? No, that job went to the 30+ reviewers that an average was taken from. That more people like it? Sorry the internet is populated by vocal minorities. If the game outsells and generates more buzz/popularity in the real world, well nuff said.

speak for yourself. most games that have hype, sales, reviews, and popularity. I hated them, e.g. Halo, Half-Life.

Shadow of the Colossus, did not have the hype, did not have the sales, popularity and its reviews were good but not 'Halo' good.

and I consider it to be the best game last gen.

preference > hype, sales, reviews and popularity

Take this example.

A failure/bum buys a self-help book. It wont work out. Why? Because hes being helped by a bum/failure. Point is yourself can be a worst enemy.

SOme people have bad tastes, take cows for example . They need reviews to push them in the right direction.

Nothing, and I mean NOTHING that has the word "better" on it is a fact, because it will always depend on personal taste.

The critic says Gears 2 is better? It isn't a fact.

Gears 2 sells more? That doesn't make it a fact.

Gears 2 was more hyped? That doesn't make it better.

hahaha, you have a point actually. which is why everbody in the "REAL" world buys a wii. Because of those 4 magic ingredients. And we gamers are the minority who dont think that a game needs to sell well to be a great game.

you mean like wii sports and wii fit?

MAN those two blow xbox360's line up without breaking a sweat.

you see......to have a great game doesnt require all four. rather some of the four.

okami was a great game but didnt sell well. doesnt make it a crap game does it?

think before posting next time

i'd take my personal opinion and thousands of other gamers (who get a game and think its great) anyday over 30+ reviewers who state their personal opinion on a game in their review...

too bad you probably need reviewers to tell you what is good or bad and buy games according to reviewers' opinions...

I dont really think Hype is as big of a deal as you make it out to be. Every single freaking exclusive gets hyped, it dumb really. Hype is merely HOPING that a game is good before actually playing it, with no bearing on it actually being good.

i got plenty personality. I see nothing wrong with trusting a metacritic score to determine the rough quality of a game.

Some people like Too Human and Lair. News Flash: some peoples tastes are inherently bad.

That's the point. It is argueable if they have bad tastes. Why do they, because a webpage says so? Nonsense.

Arguing about each indeividual's taste is useless, because , in the end, your only arguments are so fragile ( and YES, hype, reviews, popularity and sales are extremely fragile arguments ).

According to the only source we go by (Gamespot) Resistance 2 = Gears 2. One's personal opinion matters more than "facts" which are held to be your own.

Sells, hype, and popularity really mean nothing in actual reality. If you believe that, then you are admitting that the Wii is a better console than the 360.

well Wii is a better console in the eyes of the mass market, and nobody can argue that.

As a core gamer, and thus a minority, say otherwise.

Sales? You actually think the sales of a game make it good? And I also think hype doesn't count since hype doesn't do much apart from gettting your expectation ultra hype and then see 95% of hyped games flop.

in case you didnt know games' sales go to the people. not to 30 review sites. therefore the peoples opinion has more importance
