Hype threads are a joke. Way to many holes for it to be reliable.

So a lot of people in here like to use these hype threads as ammo. But I was thinking the other day about how reliable the threads are. And how easy it would be to sabotage a thread like this.

So, there's no poll to keep it from being anonymous. Good. Everyone must post what they think the topic game will score when reviewed on GameSpot. Great. Casey will then close the thread, keep it safe, count the votes, and will pull it out when needed. Great.

But here's the issue. If I hate Wii and all of the games that come with it and I want it to fail, I'd try and sabotage one of its game's hype. So, I'd go into the hype thread for that game and hype it real high. If the game gets reviewed that high, no big deal, I was right. If it doesn't, than I get to claim "teh pwnage" on sheep.

And so you say, "But we can just go back to the thread to see how someone voted." Yeah, I know. But who does that? Who's going to page through tons of posts on tons of pages to find that needle in a haystack? No one. There's no accountability here.

What do you guys think? Are these hype threads reliable?

So you're saying people would pretend to like a game and overhype it so that it will flop and they can claim ownage over themselves? If someone was smart enough to enact such an obtuse and complicated plan, then they wouldn't give a damn about System Wars anyway.

This is why I think that the System Wars Bets sticky is a great idea - it dissuades people from 'sabotaging' hype for games, and encourages people to put more thought into their opinions.

Yeah, I'm not sure how you can make them more reliable or sabotage proof. You could have every user in GS forums to assign themselves to consoles they own when they sign up. That way they are only allowed to vote on games for the system(s) they own. But, of course, that could be sabotaged as well.

I undertsand the idea of holding people accountable. No one wants people to be able to hype things that are crap. But this setup is NOT the solution.

Is anything reliable in SW? I own all three consoles, but if I ever say something bad about the 360 or the PS3 or the Wii, someone calls me a fanboy and states I don't own whatever console I just criticized. Creditability is tough to come by in these forums. But is there any other way? We as posters do the best we can. I believe a majority of the posters here are authentic. The minority of fools are eventually found out or hopefully their contribution is negated by the other posters. My .02.

I can easily believe someone would do that, ut its just the way SW works i suppose. I try to filter through posts and see the logical, interesting or exciting posts which either bring a new argument/game to my attention

On the real, I like all 3 consoles, but i do tend to be a hardcore game fanboy. So while i wont bash a game just cuz its on console X i will admit that sumtimes i start flammatory threads on game series that i dislike, before giving the game a fair go.

MP3 flopped get over it! Stop trying to make excuses, besides the majority of sheep hyped the damn game AAA. Poll hacked ,me don't think so! Unlike other review sites GS doesn't give a game a score based on track record and love for the series. Nothing has change in MP3 besides some gloom effects and the controls. If you don't like hearing the truth then GTFO and go to ign and let their "I love Nintendo, so their games will automatically be rated a 9.0+" reviews woo you for your own comfort!

P.S. Don't deny it, your sole purpose of this thread was to damage control over GS's MP3 review.

It's called "bloom", and if you want to compare the reviews, Gamespot's video review is severely lacking - it provides very little information compared to IGN's and Gametrailer's.

Also, the other sites justify their scores with category scores, while Gamespot just gives it a 'general' score - so how can you argue that GS' is more 'accurate' or 'truthful'?

Dude, slow down a little. I don't even own a Wii or even care about MP3. Besides, this isn't about one console. Its about all of them and all of the anti-that console-fanboys that come with them.

You have to take the good with the bad.

For the most part hype threads reflect a correct hype for the type of fan. I remember lots of sheep saying Metroid was going to be AAA. Blue Dragon was mostly hyped AA. If you hang around you get a sense of what the real hype is for any given game. Warhawk was a steady AA. Heavenly Sword was hyped AAA. Lair was hyped AAA but that died down to AA. Not sure how it stands now.

Without it system wars would be even more chaotic. Fanboys denying their hyped scores. Haters trying to claim ownage.

Despite the shady people , overall it seems like a good system because thegames that deserve the hype get hyped AAA anyway and the games that deserve AA get AA. The only game that probably doesn't deserve that AAA hype is Heavenly Sword. I am not sure if people were intentionally inflating that or not or maybe it was just cow desperation. I think when the mods put (AAA) in the title it might be a subliminal message to get people to up the score a bit. I hope they stop that.

  • Super Paper Mario (flop)
  • God of War II
  • Forza 2
  • Metroid (flop)

I don't think it's an average. I think Casey counts the posts and see which score got the most votes. Then that will be considered the hype.

Read the written review. Gametrailers are a KNOWN video site. I agree GS are not the best at reviewing games, regardless of scores they are not informative enough and that new guy Kevin Van0rd...well... lol.

Cows don't need the help; they hype things up beyond reason anyway. Lemmings have nothing to fear; their games actually deliver. As for MP3- it flopped, get on with your life.
