No doubt Wii and Wii game sales will spike with the release of Brawl, but after I think game sales at least will tank post-Brawl.Smash Bros is inexplicably addictive and popular--I think it satisfies most casual gamers gaming needs to the point of discouraging them from playing other games. It grosses me out sometimes how many people have Gamecubes in their college dorms for the singular purpose of playing a 7 year old game.Nintendo should release Smash Bros like EA drops Maddens.Couple new characters, few new modes, free money for Nintendo, everyone is happy. At least the people that exclusively play Halo give Microsoft 50 bucks a year. (that's from a business perspective btw, I'm not saying I prefer to pay more as a consumer)

Some casuals who've already owned a wii for a while will buy brawl though. Casuals who havent bought a Wii yet will probably get it for Wii Sports at first, then later move on.

No doubt, but initially, the draw to Wii is Wii Sports.

I don't who you talk about. Grandma isn't the only one intrigued by Wii Sports. You said 'I bet WIi sales will tank post-SSBB'. The majority of people still don't have a Wii, and a lot of them want it for Wii Sports. I don't care who your demographic is, Wii isn't stopping soon.

I don't see Wii sales getting any higher with SSBB, simply because they can't. Nintendo is still selling every single unit they make... you cannot sell more units than you actually have.

I also don't see them tanking either. I seriously doubt that the majority of people that buy a Wii have even heard of the franchise.

ThePlothole

Not sure. Your probably right but Febuary isn't the hot month for system sales.

Dude, you're going to be incredibly wrong once those Wii Fit commercials start rolling out and you see moms killing people for Wiis and Wii Fit.

Even if demand declines though, it'll still almost certainly exceed supply by a fair margin. (just by less than it currently is)

Still even durring the drought it was nearly impossible to find a Wii. But your telling us that after one of the biggest games of the year is realeased and summer starts to roll in Wii is just start showing up on the shelfs?

I'm thinking Nintendo has a few surprises for the remainder of 2008 after SSBB.

If they don't though, Wii sales won't tank, but they probably will slow down.

Ohhh. Ya I agree software and most other titles will slow down for a while. But come early spring I expect them to jump back up. Nearly every huge title like Brawl overshadows the other games for a while. GTA is going to do the same thing.

Sum it up, I belive they will pick back up again after a couple months.

Seriously, does anyone read more than the first post?! Not to pick on you.

I usually make a kind of out there argument and further develop it in the thread itself and no one ever reads further than the first post, and I get the same criticism over and over.

If the sales were strong without it in the Wii's first year, why would they tank now? Do you think that the mad sales in 2007 were all in anticipation for SSBB? Is that what all the violence was about at Christmas, the imminent SSBB arrival?

The wii's best years are ahead of it. It seems so obvious. It is getting a ton of sales, which will lead to more investment in wii games. Also the wii's tech is very new as a video game standard, so it stands that the wii will only get more refined uses of the wiimote over time. Also, if things ever slow down nintendo or whomever can just hire johnny chung lee and do that faux virtual reality on the wii that he did.

seriuosly though, nintendo should hire that guy

If there are people who like brawl so much they don't want to buy other games than at least they're happy. I don't really see the problem with this, unless You admit there is a 3rd party on the Wii.

The Wii hits 35 million units sold by the end of 2008, and you can quote me if you want to. Put it in your sig, I'm standing by it.

So it's clear I disagree with you. The Wii has little to offer in 2008 as far as I can see, but Brawl and Wii Fit will be enough to keep sales high.

How many Wiis in total did they sell in their first year? I just want to see how reasonable your claim sounds.

SSBB will not even be the best selling Wii game next year. I'd give Wii Fit a better shot at that, even though it has already been out in Japan for a while now. Also, MK Wii has a good shot at selling more, although I still think Brawl will sell better. Another game that has a shot at outselling brawl next year is SMG.

More then half that 35m

18 million? 18.5 million? 19 million? Do we have exact numbers?

No accurate numbers yet, but a good guess seems to be 19 million + based on what is known. It might be as much as 20.5 million, but I wouldn't expect it to be less than 18.5 million.

The Wii sold approximately 19.5 million units to consumers in 1 year and 1 month, according to VGChartz, which is at least semi accurate, since 360 sold 17ish million to retail and we know the Wii surpassed it long ago and has been beating it in the americas, others, and japan for a while now, according to Famitsu and NPD.

So, if it sells as well as this year, 35 sounds right.

Now, as for next year:

SSB:Brawl

Mario Kart

Wii Music

Wii Fit

All are confirmed for 08, along with a nice slew of 3rd party titles, like NMH on the 22nd, and Tales of Symphonia in or around Q4(I'm assuming). Possibly spore, as well as quite a few other games, but I would be remiss to list them here, which does include a rockband sku, we all assume.

That said, I think the Wii is gonna dominate this generation for the forseeable future, and that is as close to a fact as your gonna get.

Brawl is gonna be huge and so is Kart.

Melee and Double Dash were the 2 biggest sellers on the Gamecube.

Questions?

Also, don't forget Wii fit and Mario Kart Wii. These are guaranteed million sellers. The Wii can probably survive on Nintendo alone because they can now make smaller budget games and their development cycle is faster and studios are larger.

Wii fit has 0.99 millon copies in Japan alone according to VGchartz.com so I'm think maybe 5 million copies or if the Wii gets that big 10 million + at the end of it's lifespan.

I'll take that bet.... why do people keep doubting the popularity of the Wii?

They'll never tank for the rest of 2008. 2009 might just might be the start of 360/ wii domination and the PS3 a close 3rd.

Casuals aren't buying the Wii for Brawl.

They buy it for Wii Sports.

Homesrfan
And Wii Fit now. I wonder if GS is gonna review it lol
