So Important when talking about "Next Gen" of consoles. You have all these games for a certain system and you still have the system itself but the point about playing old games on the new system is a deal or no deal for some...Like its really really not that hard to keep your old system..the system that those old games are MEANT to be played on haha. Personally when I get a next gen system its to play, those NEXT GEN games but of course I love my old games and if I want to play them, well I use my old system, its quite easy. Plus with BC you have non of your save data so you will start all over anyways if you were to play those old games on the next gen system. So in the end, Its NOT that big of a deal honestly.

Well old consoles have a habbit of breaking after awhile. If my console dies and I can't play an old game on my new console, I'm kind of screwed. I do like going back from time to time and playing games.

This is why I love my PC so much. I can play games from the 90s with no problem.

Hell I'm probably going to pick up a slim PS2 one of these days and try to find a few games I never got to play, just so I have a working PS2 and some games for it. I need to do the same with my Xbox.

Well 360 had games before 2009, so MS's new console will need some games to play on it.

Being mainly a Hermit, I've always had my B/C so I can't relate much to the lack of it....

That being said, I regard it as something that is valued highly at the beginning of any generation and diminished throughout.

Having always had the opportunity to play my old games, I can't say I've used it that much, unless in lack of new games to play.

Because having many consoles laying around and having to connect a different one on your tv etc depending on what game you want to play is unpractical.

Miau that does makes sense if at the beginning of a ten there isn't much to play then again Ive never encountered that problem because seemingly there is always something new. Tykain yes its not practical but at one point necessary because cmon you're not going to have BC for N64/gamecube, Ps, Ps2,Ps3 forever, especially with the possiblity of companies switching to Download only. It would also diminish business for Sony and Microsoft and Nintendo for new IPs if people are still stuck strictly to the old games on the NEW console. Im not saying BC is bad but not a necessary. I probably see it like a luxury.

Because it's possible to run PS2 and GameCube/Wii games in 1080p on a good enough PC but you have to buy them again to play them on the PS3?

And I suppose Wii U will be the same story regarding GameCube classics.

Many others would argue my point too. So where are we at now? haha I just think its nitpicking to use BC as a continuous point against buying the new system when its indeed a New System.

My main focus are to those that deem a new system a failure and say "Im not buying it anymore" because it can't play old games which I find rather silly.

bc is important for the 1st year or so of a new console, after that i really don't care so much since after that there will be enough software out that i won't be looking at older games.

I'm sure sony and M$ systems will have very similar lineups. If somebody is only going to buy one, not being able to play past games will be a big blow against it.

Because having one system is greater than having multiple systems, and in today's world there is technology to allow backwards compatibility?

We don't live in a world of cartridges anymore. Now we have optical media, and digital media.

My blu-ray player plays all my old DVDs, my PC plays all my PC games, and my MP3 player plays all the songs from my old CDs.

Now why would I want to have a Wii, Wii U, PS2, PS3, and PS4 under my tv when Sony/Nintendo could just make the Wii U, and PS4 backwards compatible so that I can just have two systems under my tv?

It's more convenient, it's less cluttered, my outlet won't be a cluster**** of cables, and it's much nicer looking.

There are absolutely ZERO downsides to backwards compatibility, but multiple upsides to those of us who continue playing old games even after new ones come out.

Computability is the ability to solve a problem in an effective manner.

I agree. If a console was computing backwards, it wouldn't run it's own games, let alone another consoles.

First of all it's MLAUnot Miau;)

Second of all B/C is'nt really a big issue in the grand scheme of SW.

Thisforum consists of two major factions and two lesser ones:

1: The disturbingly similar "HD Twin" factions, who bicker about anything and everything. GFX/Performance disputes are somewhat kept at bay, by the presence of a "common enemy"; so we're left with petty arguments like "no B/C" VS "dead B/C" and the visual difference between 1280*720/1152 x 720....

2: Then we have the sheep.... Underpowered, casual, ignored.... IMHO, I regard the Wii as somewhat guilty but that's not the point. Between shovelware, unimpressive visuals and the notion of milkage, this faction maintains a low profile. This is a world where, either SMG is so good that it trumphs life itself or the Wii has nothing...

Handhelds are their own universe, mind you...

3: The common enemy..... This is my faction: The obnoxious, arrogant, elitist Hermits.....

We're probably the most hated of all in SW and for good reason. We're underwhelmed by everything, dismiss every single argumentative post made in SW and generally think our system is superior, unlike........... Who?

Bottom line: The importance of backwards compatibility relies on the current relationship between SW factions and the available strengths they have to play on....

Like its really really not that hard to keep your old system

Andres001

Yeah that's bs. You have current gen consoles breaking even 1 year after purchase.

Without backwards combatibility games like Halo 3 and Uncharted will just dissapear in 5-6 years, like they never existed. Of course being mainly a PC gamer this not an issue for me for a lot of games I like.

I just enjoy playing some older games. For the first 2 years of this gen, I spent a lot of time playing older games. I also love playing PS2 horror games because this gen has been lacking in that genre.

This is all just speculation, I think these rumors are coming from no named sites that are just trying to rake in internet hits for money. At least I hope all this talk about the next Xbox is, if it's true then I will simply NOT be looking forward to next gen. I hate to say it but I have a feeling that the next Xbox will try to focus on DD alot, and will try to move away from disc formats, I do hope they support it though.

So who knows, at this point it's just speculation like I said. I do like BC though.

I KNOW why BC is good, Hell I support it onto new consoles if it is possible but my focus are to the people who dismiss, disregard, pass, object, bycott or whatever, a system for it and see the system as a whole as a failure. No I dont have them all hooked up becuase its not neccesery but if I do want to play something then I take it out and set it up for as long as I want to play. If a system wants to play all my old games, I would LOVE that forsure but using it as a negative towards and system and why NOT TO BUY it is my problem.

I like being able to play old games. Don't have to worry about looking for old consoles online or pulling out one of my old consoles and plugging it in if I wanna play a game from an older generation. :)

It's convenient. I have only so much shelf space, and if I can play my older games on current hardware that's one less system and controller I have to worry about, and one more free input in the TV that I don't have to continually swap out for different systems.

Yeah it's a big deal. If I can sell my former system or trade it for a new one and still keep my library of games that's a huge incentive. Consoles age and degrade, as hardware does, and unfortunately the best thing we have to document console titles of old is PC emulation due to the sheer lack of backwards compatibility and systems coming and going. Which is fairly ironic.

I look at my big gaming collection and wonder If I'll be able to come back to them in a few years. After my 360 breaks and buying a new one becomes too much of a chore, will I be able to play my games on the 720? What about all the games I'm buying digitally to my XBL and PSN accounts? Can I play them on the 720/PS4?

Great backwards compatibility (not buggy etc) is a huge selling point for me. If the 720 has near-perfect backwards compatability it will be my first next-gen console for sure (probably, the Wii-U might pull out a HD Zelda early or a 3D Pokemon game or something).
