Start a new JRPG IP. They certainly have the talent and the resources and it would definitely draw JRPG fans into the system, especially in Japan. The PS3 could clearly use some JRPGs and why shouldn't Sony address the problem themselves? Tbh, I'm almost surprised they haven't tried something already.

Your thoughts?

They funded Demon's Souls and White Knight Chronicles.
Aren't those JRPG's?

Did they?

They seem to be loose JRPGs heavily influenced by western RPGs. WKC is more of a JRPG than Demon's Souls which is barely a JRPG at all.

When was the last time a new JRPG franchise sold well in the West? Pokemon Red/Blue?

I thought lots of JRPGs just dont make it overseas.

JRPGs dont sell save for Final Fantasy, which is pretty much the only exception.

I think they have a JRPG or two on PSP released in 2006 that never made it, but I'm not aware of any PS3 titles.

They'd be better off investing in waggle games.

I don't believe this for one second. Both Sony and MS are ultimately better off leaving Nintendo's market alone, while focusing on the market extraneous to the new casuals.

They would be foolish not to go after the casual market. It really doesn't matter if Nintendo dominates it or not , there's a vast market out there. It's something that they have always done , why would they stop now?

I know Sony helped out Level 5 budget while working on WKC. Does that count?

Let me re-phrase my point: A brand-new JRPG franchise on the PS3 simply will not sell outside of JPN. It will either have to be a highly-publicized multi-platform game, or be released under the name of an established-in-the-west name like Final Fantasy, Warcraft, or Star Wars. Now, if Sony makes a Western-esque RPG full of guns, mature content, and Marines, the game will probably sell.

But they shouldn't approach the casual market in the same way Nintendo has, because it's a futile effort imo because Nintendo holds a monopoly on the concept.

I mean a standard JRPG, but I suppose it sort of counts. WKC is not really a story oriented JRPG.

It's a new market and it's still up for grabs. Sony will have to either accept themselves as a niche company, or do their damndest to top Nintendo and make the most money. What do you think they're going to do?

It's not a market that will last very long though.

I think Sony will continue to fight MS over the hardcore market, which is guaranteed (to stay).

Agreed, if they go after nintendo's market, they're going to get a third of what nintendo has at best, while losing what they have right now.

That reminds me... I wonder what Game Republic is working on now. Perhaps a Folklore sequel?
